20OCT23: Swans Daily Media

I feel these types of articles should be evaluated after the 2024 season.

What if god forbid Adams hammy goes twang in round 1 was it still a good acquisition?

But yes overall its one of the best hauls we have acquired in recent years especially as quite a few were contracted.

Yeah I can easily see a future where all four of our recruits don't really bear much fruit. Glad we got the deals done but they mean nothing as of now.

How does that make any sense? Anyone’s hammy could go at any time. If we recruited Petracca would we wait until the end of next season to say it was a good trade? No, we’d base it on what we know now

Why are some of you acting like we recruited a bunch of retirees?

We didn't recruit a bunch of retirees. We did recruit a bunch of players most of whom weren't in their respective sides' best 22s as of their last game.

The point isn't to not be excited or hopeful about our trade period, it's this arbitrary awarding of winners and losers in the media that is illogical.

My take on our recruits is that we already had a best 23. Except ruck. But after that our experience dropped off a cliff. We traded in experience so that in the event of injury we had experienced backup. We also have a pipeline of good talent that needs good experienced players around them to develop to their full potential. Getting smashed every week in the VFL is not a great environment to develop in.

I think we all know that "winning" the trade period is purely based on the now and not taking future hypotheticals in to account.

In that sense, a team can be seen to have had the best trade period based on what we know now. It doesn’t mean it’ll remain that way and we’ll win the flag in 2024 and I’m not sure if anyone has seriously suggested that.

Morris was the best of those by far.

We have another 4 club player at the Swans - Joel Hamling. May his influence be as great as our last one

That is why I thought it was absurd having Duursma ahead of Grundy. Surely Grundy will enable our midfield and synergies will flow. Adding an underwhelming Duursma to Essendon rates higher? Or Stephens to North Melbourne will have a bigger impact?
Similar to the number of dud players that are rated as "elite" by champion data.

It's just a result of age - output over career is obviously going to be higher for someone in their early 20s than aged 30, even though the 1 or 2 year value of the young players should be lower because those guys arent as good (or arent that good yet). We get a decent amount better now from our recruits for our immediate attack on a flag. The fair cost of that is the draft capital we gave up, plus we do lose the future potential of Stephens.
