Walking away with something like this would make me happy

#9 - Nate Caddy - Mobile key forward with x-factor.
#31 - Jack Delean - Kicks goals, Good overhead. Has a bit of mongrel in the forward line.
#35 - Taylor Goad - Athletic freak of a ruckman. Project player

RD - Angus Hastie - Still developing after leaving other sports. Speedy tall half back flanker worth giving a year or two on the rookie list to see if he develops.

Probably not now we have Gresham in. Can afford to have a look at Jayden and see Menzie for another year.

No more taking ruckmen with good picks. Max Gawn is about the only ruckman who has been inside the top 10 rucks most of their careers to win a flag since Dean Cox. It's a useless position for forming a system and it's incredibly easy to bring one in when the side matures.

What? 35 isnt a good pick 🤣
And you definitely need a solid strong competitor ruck to be able to win a flag (jolly, Mcevoy, Mumford, nank, otters), Nic nat should’ve also won a flag but did his knee late in 2018. I don’t think we are at the point where you can go oh we should draft this young ruck we like, because history says star rucks don’t win flags. That’s a weird philosophy. Would I use a pick 35 to get a player like that, yes I would happily.

I dunno, a kid with a junior career littered with hamstring injuries might be a bit of a red flag
The point being their are kids who have injury problems before they’re drafted and are injury free for a majority of their afl career (selwood). Then there are kids who haven’t shown any sign of injury issues (gumbleton etc) and just can’t get on the park and their body doesn’t hold up to full time professional footy. You can’t really pick if a players body is going to start breaking down when they’re 20.

Since when is a second rounder not a good pick. Pick 39 would have got us Chad Warner instead of Nick Bryan. Meanwhile Darcy Cameron went for a fourth round upgrade and he's as good if not better than any ruck we've drafted since Ryder.

Weird to say Nic Nat would have won one, when instead they won the flag with a bunch of spuds, it shows how utterly irrelevant he was to their system.

You do need a solid strong competitor which practically zero rucks are for about 6 years. We keep wasting years attempting to develop them when every well run club trades one in when needed for not a lot of resources after the rest of the pieces are there. Lycett, Blake and Gawn the only premiership number 1 rucks in the last 15 years to not be traded in.

We have 3 rucks on the list, two of them young for ruck standards. Competing for 1 slot. We have zero big bodied inside mids, zero half back ball users. Not saying don't draft a ruck but if we are going to take years developing, may as well take them as rookies or in the midseason draft.

Pick 35 is an average pick ever since the draft is only 55-60 picks these days, probably closer to 50-55 this year. It’s not like there’s 80-85 picks like the old days.

You’re picking and choosing, who is to say we were even looking at warner. The recruiting world didn’t rate Warner that highly and didn’t think he had the skillset to be an elite afl player, hence slipping to 39.

The point about Nic nat is they were 14-3 when he did his knee and was a huge part of why they were so dominant, they had to change their whole game when he went down and it was lucky that they faced a non threatening tap ruck in 2/3 of the finals (grundy). If Nic nat played that grand final they win by 5-6 goals imo.

So you’re happy to draft a ruck but would rather it be a shitter one that is only good enough to be taken in the rookie draft ? If you want a position / list need , you take the best option you see fit that will have a long career. Pretty dumb list management to be like oh we only want to spend a rookie pick on a ruck, so we will draft player x there even though we think player y is a better prospect but we don’t want to spend pick 35 on him.

Personally I don’t think we need to draft another ruck yet. But I do like the look of Taylor goad, but that is besides the point if you want to fill a list need you should be taking the player you best see if fit, if available at that pick.

I would say picks in the thirties this year are a lot more speculative.

Wait, haven’t we been bitching about recruiting clean cut private school captains?

Plenty of successful team have a few complete dickheads.

Not saying we shouldn't recruit him because he's a dick, just saying don't get your hopes up because I don't think the club has changed quite that much...
