Could you elaborate on that point or aspect please

Im a freelancer/contractor thus Public holidays are just like any other day , if you want to get paid you have to work , and thats what i did today , just finished , so i didnt see the game

But reading this thread/review of the game , alot of players are having said about them that they played well

Thus just 2 points - what were the poor/dissappointing aspects of Geelongs play today , and who were the poorer players for Geel today

When i looked up this thread title to see who had won the game , i wouldnt have been shocked ( given the outs ) if Haw had beaten us , so im very pleased the Cats have banked the 4 pts
Can’t tell if you’re being serious but I’ll give you a serious answer…

In the second quarter we completely took the foot off. We regressed to the thing Geelong often do in lapses where we stop pressuring, stop cracking in at stoppages and give opponents too much space, including in D50. We did it again after the lightning delay for about 10 minutes. SDK was atrocious in these periods although to his credit he finished strongly. Our midfield went completely missing and the good work setup in the first quarter was almost completely undone in these lapses. In the period at the start of the last quarter the clearances were 8-0 against us.

Hawthorn are real minnows at the moment. Good teams are going to beat up on them all year. As I said I’m glad we go the job done but we made it harder than it needed to be.

A great game? We did lose the ruck in the finish, but he put in a valiant effort.

No argument from me that Stanley has absolutely lost a yard or six since 2022. It was a nice change to see a ruckman taking a few good clunks.

I like the signs, but let's not over-egg it. We set people up for failure by our own unrealistic standards here.
I think Conway played a great 2nd half. Was one of the one of the reasons we were able to get back into the game. Not even just because of his initial ruck work but his def touches in the contest. Multiple times he knocked it to advantage and prevented the ball going behind him for gauranteed hawks goals. Did I mention he also took pack marks and kicked a goal. I feel like Stanley's more of a liability.

I broadly agree but I thought some of his ruck work was instrumental in the third - got the footy moving forward and outside Hawthorn’s structure.
Agree with both of you. I thought his early tap work setup the big 1st quarter too. But to Jez’s point, Conway was being talked up as having gone past Stanley in pre-season off the back of 1 AFL game and if anything today proved that he’s still a work in progress and we will need both of them in 2024.

MOD NOTE

If we're going to start heaping the praise on young Jhye, can we please get the spelling of his name correct

JHYE CLARK

There's no 'E' on the end of Clark

Yes, in the past we've had a Clarke or two on the list and they happened to share the same first name - David, with Jnr last playing in the hoops back in 2003

We also had Georgia Clarke as part of our womens team

I know he's only a few games into his career, but can we please try to get the young mans name right

A fit Dangerfield and Guthrie added into our midfield would make us a reasonably complete team imo.

Clark and Parf would maybe be the guys that move aside for them if ever is available.

The good news is, when we were “on” today, it was off the back of Conway, Bruhn, Holmes, Clark, O.Henry, Stengle all lighting it up. The future is bright.

Not sure about others, but being at the game felt that the game was tighter than the score suggested. I suppose after 1/4 time it was..

Just rapt that for long periods in the game our young midfield were on top. I didn’t expect them to hold sway the entire match which is what happened. But for them to hold their end up was particularly pleasing. This was a team that was missing its 3 chief mids from the 2022 GF.

Stengle for me was a clear BOG. Played his position to absolute perfection.

SDK was good in the air and I thought played his best game for the year. Was a little untidy with a couple of possessions but otherwise he looked to have turned the corner.

Conway for a young bloke performed admirably. He has ruck smarts that are rare. His mobility is also impressive watching his follow up work.

Bruhn was damaging early. Still needs to put a 4 quarter game together but the improvement is noticeable from last year. He’s going to be good. Very good.

Meek was a massive reason Hawthorn got back in the game twice.

Again, I really liked Toby. But if that game came from Stanley, we’d be disappointed again.
Yeah but I don't think he was up against Conway for most of that. A few contests he lost on the 4th but especially that burst he had in the 2nd I reckon Conway was off the ground. 66% ToG to Meeks 88%.

I think Meek turning the game is on Conway's fitness and not being on the actual rather than his actual ruck work
