I'm glad they're sick of talking about it. I hope it pushes them to put it all together on the last day when it counts because as a fan I'm sick of watching it all fall apart on the last day.
Yeah. They already told us that game didn’t define them. No point Dwelling on the GF, right Kiama Chris ?

Cmon Bedford - catch on. KC moved on pretty quickly and I haven’t.

There’s no irony font unfortunately.

But yes, I am still dwelling - looking forward to the new season for sure, still spitting chips in the way we lost it.

Never said that JHWF, just that getting stuck in the grieving process is not healthy and there comes a time to move on. That's also more or less what Gulden said. Smart kid, even if he stuffed up.

Kelly was not short of bravery, nor was he precious about his body. Freshly back from a bad knee injury he took a high mark and landed heavily. His attitude was the knee would just have to cope. He didn't hold back.

Another of that generation was Wade Chapman, the unsung hero who kicked the ball to Plugger to mark outside 50 on the siren to kick the famous "any score will do" behind that got us into the '96 GF. Chapman was a regular head injury patient at a North Sydney hospital where a friend worked. His head injury count was legendary, in a bad way. The docs told him time and again his playing style would kill him but he just threw himself into the guts like a mad dog in a fight.

Perhaps Kels inspired his teammates like Chapman and Cressa too. That team revived the Bloods spirit (on and off field) which turned our club around and revived a culture which has led to decades of finals and pride in the Bloods. Kirk based his leadership on the Bloods mantra. Roos took it from the field to his coaching. Did 2020 Longmire move away from the hard grind of the Bloods as he re-developed our team for a fast skilled attacking game? It seems we need some more of that Bloods culture to get our team through the hard grind of a GF.

Cox experienced the Bloods culture directly particularly the 2005 and 2006 GFs. He watched as the grit and defensive determination of a bunch of blue-collar players overwhelmed the flashier, faster and more skilled WC team. Cox was the legendary ruck of the most skilled and speedy midfield in the league and yet they fell short of the hard as nails Swans who relied more on grit and determination. Boring footy indeed! In 2006 WC came back more ready for a hard scrap.

I'm hoping what we saw in the praccy match was Cox's Swans freshly reminded of their Bloods culture, particularly post-2020 Swans who only experienced a game style relying more on speed and skill. Sometimes we need to go back to brave but boring hard defensive footy, responsibility and mate supporting mate, until we can get the game back on our terms. Once they wrestle back control they can once again play fast thrilling fancy footy in flash boots. I want to see more.

Seems like HB has been reading Big Footy

I had my heart broken many times before I found the perfect woman. Do I regret the time I wasted? Not at all.

Would I swap all the exciting times with lovers who failed to make final cut? Not at all. I'd rather have enjoyed great years with poor endings than years of boredom waiting for Ms Perfect.

I trust the Swans will always do well. They will almost always make finals and they will fairly often make the GF. I enjoy those seasons immensely. The ending has broken my heart but it mends.

There are two lines from the great American poet Alfred Lord Tennyson which I find most fitting

'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all : In Memoriam (S27) 1850

In the spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love : Locksley Hall 1842

I already fancy this team and I expect my thoughts may turn to love in spring. I hope this time the team is no.1 and not another no.2 (pun intended)

I’ll never forget the day Daryn Cresswell bashed his own dislocated kneecap back in & played on against Geelong.

They were a tough crew, that team of the Kelly era.

Cressa made it harder by bending his leg. Had he kept the leg flat and leaned forward more the dislocated knee cap would have been much easier to pop into place. I was watching that game with a nurse who kept screaming at him through the TV. "Straighten your bloody knee"

Kelly was notorious for playing with broken ribs. Those guys were tough and resilient. Mental health advice was pretty much "take a teaspoon of cement and harden the f... up.

In fairness, I think there are plenty who would do the same today.

And if they did, they'd be crucified by the medical & conditioning staff, and the coach would be called an idiot for playing them.

A lot of the players that were revered as so "tough" back in the 80s & 90s are also now the ones who have raised increased awareness about concussion issues, which has led to the introduction of the concussion protocols for the slightest of head knocks.

It's the era, not the athletes IMO. And it is ultimately a good thing.

Who is HB please
HB Meyers who owns and leads the Mongrel Punt. IMO one of the best writers on AFL. Not all of his offsiders reach that standard but a few do. He wrote that particular article and if you read it I think you would agree with what I said - his feelings reflect a lot of what has been said on this board.

BTW he follows the Hawks but we are his second team and he DOES read our board.
