His problem yesterday was he couldn't get within coowee of Waterman to make a contest. Some of that was the speed of which the ball came in and it's hard to tell what's happening out of frame but his reaction time and speed on the lead did seem down.
They talked about Waterman on the tele, how he is good at holding his position when behind the defender, and quick on the lead. He's just a strong, good forward, and Corr needs a gallop or 2 to tune his fitness up. Imo.

Maybe the nickname morphs into McTorture when he starts carving up the oppo.
Or McFuggncatchme as he's zooming away from a would be chaser

As this group matures together there will be defining moments in games. There was yesterday but we still are not there . Two or three goals up late in games one day we will break the trend and win by 6 or 7 goals
This group still doesn’t have the belief , when this starts to happen other teams will mentally know we can overcome them .

Would K Dawson have been a better pick? He’s quicker off the mark - but maybe not as good in body on body contested situations?

Idk as Waterman played Corr from behind as well. Might be an argument for another defender to come across and help, though that leaves a spare forward. Perhaps being stronger defensively in the middle ..... it's why Clarko is on the big bucks and not me :-D FWIW I don't mind K Dawson.

Put this in corrs player thread but we played a plus one at the stoppage on the first quarter and you can see on the movement to waterman that when we get beaten out of stoppage we don’t have the extra back to handle defending 1v1

Waterman is quick on the lead and rightfully corr got torched with fast ball movement. Tough gig when we defend like that in the middle

Teams are aware of the 1-2 that they try 90% of the time now too.

It doesn’t really matter. If our players work hard enough and are smart enough to identify I numerical superiority around the ball, then it’s the simplest, un-defendable play in the game.

It’s a bit like the puck ‘n roll in basketball. It’s evolved over time but its simplicity makes it a staple of transitioning the ball through the defence.

Didn’t get to watch it yesterday, but was keeping track of the game through this thread. And holy moley. Some posters on here have completely lost their minds. I can understand it given what the club has put us through, but dear lord.

Watched the game this morning and it was pretty much a good game for us. Seemed like a normal praccy match in a million degree heat. One side pretty much dominated the majority of the first 3 quarters, but didn’t take their chances in front of the sticks, and were completely zapped in the last.

Way more confident on the season than I was after the Melbourne match.

Wow, almost ticked off all the excuses in one post. You forgot to mention the players we had out as well.

The melts in this thread would have you think we've lost by 50 in a real game and we haven't imrpoved at all.

It's a nothing game with a nothing result riding on it. Yes it would have been nice to win but I think Clarko and the coaches would be happy with the takeaways and know what we need to work on. Overall I think the positives far outweighed the negatives.

I liked how in the 2nd when they started kicking away we were able to stem the tide by keeping possession with short little chip kicks. In the past we would have put our head down.
No that was last week against the Dee’s . This week we dominated but still lost . I think that’s the issue.

Think you’ve made your point, it was hilarious the first 30 or so times but getting a little stale now.

You know what’s actually stale?

Idiots on here still making excuses for this team.

Embarrassing

My takeaways: Ball movement was much better, forward pressure was good, structures were tighter. Only thing we really did badly was kicking for goal. Our backs weren't terrible but someone was going to get on a few once we were opened up. Mid pressure can be better. Waterman is a good player. Yes we butchered a few kicks, even Larkey's field kicking was pretty poor at times. If we took our chances in front of goal it could have been a 6-8 goal flogging.
No more injuries is a plus.
Reid was hardly sighted. Powell gave him a bath.
Phillips was good but needs to stick tackles.
Tucker surprised me. I think he stays in.
FOS is everything he was hyped to be.
LDU stepped up a gear. He just danced around them.
Onfield Darling is adding more to this team than Daniel and Parker combined. Competitive beast who just does not get beaten. Could have had 4.
Lots of positives. Not too fussed about the result.

When Corr took the front position he copped a two hands shove in the back and waterman was paid the mark. On the majority, if not all of the other occasions when the ball came in towards waterman, Corr could be seen charging towards him at full clip but was unable to time his spoil to impact on Waterman's ability to take the easy mark.

It may be that he is very quick on the lead but early in the match especially, Corr seemed to be at a loss to effectively spoil or contest. Was he standing too far away or was he ball watching?

I'm genuinely hoping that the run will help with his preparation for when the season starts. I think Corr has enough ability to be given the benefit of the doubt given his disrupted preparation. Logue as well. He seemed to improve as the game wore on but may have been knackered by the end of it.

I just can't understand why comben didn't look like he has in the past when at the very least he could intercept opposition attacks and belt the ball forward. His dinky missed passes yesterday were not worthy of an AFL level player. That's in terms of the decision making and in terms of the execution. I admit that the person who calls for a 10 metre pass while standing still inside the opposition 50 has to bear a proportion of the blame.

Gifted goals kill momentum and team conference. The Larkey kick was equally as bad.

Ultimately, a win or a loss in a practice match is meaningless and its more important that lessons are learned from the errors and from the positive events. I'm pretty happy to say that there were a lot of positives to carry into the season but I do hope that the coaching and conditioning staff can find solutions to the negatives that were exposed.

To be fair, his kicking was only poor at the times he had the ball.

Ok, it's a joke. He is normally a very accurate kick but he was off target by miles on at least a couple of occasions yesterday. Glad if he's got the bad kicks out of his system now.

It’s like starting with a 5 goal handicap.

Corr - useless
McDonald - useless
Comben - overrated hack

Archer - tick
Daniel - tick

Logue - undecided

We may as well play Whitlock given what we get from Corr and Comben.

Harsh on Comben. Was not great yesterday but has been good for us since back on the park.

Logue is a very good player. Just needs continuity.

No quibbles with the other assessments. McDonald should not be playing, and Corr can have the odd decent game but is a stopgap until one of the other young tall defenders comes through.

Stop quoting stats, he was poor.

Shaun Atley wasn’t padding numbers with one two’s that didn’t help the team.

Having 15 handballs you would hope that you are going better than 63%. Don’t be fooled by Champion Data who call it an effective disposal even if you put your teammate in trouble.

Then stop quoting 1 ****ing preseason game in gale force winds like it’s gospel for the next 15 years.

He had both 80% kicking and 80% handball efficiency last year from a 16 game sample size. Which is miles better than any other midfielder in the side.

Sheezel had 71% and 82% the year prior playing exactly the same half back role if you want to get really technical.

He turns it over occasionally, but so does everybody.

Sheezel averaged over 2 more turnovers a game than McKercher playing exactly the same role…
