Personal attacks are also to be kept to a minimum.

Just a reminder, even if it hasn't come up for a few pages and y'all should know this stuff by now:

This thread is not about Covid, lockdowns, or vaccines. It is about Donald Trump. While Trump was in office during the pandemic and his response to Covid is relevant, there are pertinent threads for you to post your opinions on those things in.

It might also do with reminding a few that when you post on the SRP, you are responsible for backing up/verifying your claims to fact. What this means is that you will be asked time to time to support your claims with evidence, to ensure that this forum is as free of misinfomation as we can make it.

Do not post conspiracy theories on this forum. We have an entire other forum for that.

Thanks all.

Congrats Royces Hart on the new thread title!

Very positive from Rubio. Gained a spine out of the other week.

“ Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, said the ball was “now in Russia’s court” after Ukraine said it was ready to accept an immediate 30-day ceasefire. “If they [Russia] say no then we’ll unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace here,” he said. “Ukrainians are ready to stop the fighting, they’re ready to stop the shooting, they’re ready to get to the table,” Rubio told reporters in Jeddah, after negotiations between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.

The irony
Conservative comedians the Hodgetwins replied by pointing out that Volkswagen was "literally founded" by the Nazis, to which Musk replied with a laughing emoji and a "100" sign.

Interesting article suggesting Musks star is dimming within the White House

Trump ain’t abandoning him. They’re going to go down together like Thelma and Louise.

There’s going be many more corrupt grifting Tesla infomercials to come.

But of course this cease fire deal - even if agreed by the Russians - is not the end game that Trump is making it out to be.

Russia has failed to adhere to any long term treaty deal in relation to Ukraine - going as far back as the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 when Ukraine yielded its nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees from the U.S., U.K. and Russia. So why would they adhere to lasting peace in Ukraine now - especially now that they have made major incursions on the battlefield in recent weeks?

Zelenskyy and European governments know this far too well - they only need to look back to what happened with the Minsk agreements signed from 2014 when talking peace in Ukraine.

The Minsk agreements ultimately failed to secure a durable peace. Just like what Trump and Rubio are proposing now, the Minsk Agreements focussed on stalling the conflict rather than resolve it. What they did do was to allow Russia to consolidate control over the occupied territories while keeping Ukraine politically and militarily constrained. Moscow never adhered to its commitments, using the diplomatic process to buy time, regroup and prepare for further aggression.

As always, Trump is only focussed on the short term illusion of the deal - how a ceasefire agreement will make him look to his MAGA supporters - the idiotic rhetoric of how he is a 'winner' compared to Biden. Unlike Trump, Putin, Zelenskyy and the Ukraine people understand history and are focussed on a much longer timeframe and what happens when the ceasefire agreement, like every agreement before it, falls over.

In most cases, countries aren’t selling to US markets. Individual companies are selling to US markets.

What happens to prices will, in part, depend on price elasticity of demand for imported steel in the US. Given it’s not a branded product (though there may be grade/quality variations), if there is sufficient domestic US supply, US suppliers can mop up the shortfall, either at the price they were already selling or (more likely) at a higher price since all their competitors’ prices just went up by 25%.

If there isn’t sufficient US domestic supply, how will a price increase affect demand? If it reduces demand significantly, some overseas companies may reduce their price to increase demand for their product, meaning they will bear the cost of the tariff in the form of lower profitability. However, if steel is an essential product, US buyers will have to keep buying at the higher cost and they’ll bear the tariff. That’s in the short run.

In the longer run, US production of steel might increase - that’s what Trump is trying to achieve - but it might not be an efficient use of capital and resources.

That’s a fairly simplistic (Econ 101) explanation of what might happen. In reality it will be messier.

How is raising the tariffs not in breach of the various Free Trade Agreements? GATT, NAFTA et al? Or is it and he just doesn't care because the WTO like the ICJ and other international courts/tribunals are toothless tigers?

The only way to snap Trump and his band of idiots out of this, is to hit them in the hip pocket.

Stop buying American anything, go Australian everything.

Dont plan American travel.

For me, no Amazon, Netflix cancelled. Nothing from Supermarket or alcohol from America.

Support our economy, that they have decided to ruin.

Grow some spine, decline American......

It's posturing unless we ban super funds from investing in American markets.

Prime is bezos owned , interesting

When is home alone 2 going to get 24/7 reruns
AI replace Trump with Obama and watch the melts :D

Trump is deliberately misleading, or himself doesn’t understand.

Either way, it can be simplified to:

It’s a tax on a product.

if that product is completed (eg a TV, a car), the consumer pays directly

If that product is a natural resource or other input (eg steel, gold, iron ore, microchips), then the company that will use that in their production pays it, and then passes onto consumer, so the consumer pays indirectly.

Either way, American consumers are paying for them.
Their economy will suffer.
Their people will suffer.
Not much else to it.
And while these policies push prices up people are being laid off in huge numbers by DOGE. This isn't going to end well for anyone.

This is truly disgusting and the main reason trump needs to be gotten rid of asap.

'Trump’s ‘drill, baby, drill’ agenda could keep the world hooked on oil and gas
The US president is making energy deals with Japan and Ukraine, and in Africa has even touted resurrecting coal.'

Biden fossil maxxed tbf, no one in the US elite will even attempt to solve this problem, that much is clear

I've already touched on this numerous times in this forum.

I personally don’t disagree with your principle and hitting the hip pocket always hurts them. But America's shadow is baked into our economy far deeper than just Netflix and Amazon. The supermarket scanner? US tech. Your phone apps? US infrastructure. Most logistics, payment processors, data servers, digital identity layers... all hooked to the US digital nervous system.

Boycotting American consumerism alone is symbolic (useful), but not strategic. If we’re serious, we need to build leverage, not just withdraw. That means developing Australian-owned alternatives in digital services, manufacturing, media, infrastructure, cloud platforms, renewable tech, even fintech layers. Otherwise we’re just declining American while still leaning on them for the basics.

A real economic firewall isn’t built at checkout, it’s built in code, in industry, in policy, in narrative ownership. If all we do is cancel Netflix while our banks run on Oracle and our media servers ping AWS, we’re still caught in the trap.

You want to decline America? Then replace them. Out create them.
