Good to get the win but geez that was a frustrating watch. They can play much better and we should expect much better.

The midfield really didn't take advantage of our ruck dominance, the backline was constantly caught allowing their men goal side. I mean it looks dire back there. And our overall execution was poor, so many easy dropped marks, several inside F50.

Positives. Tommy As first game for the year was a step in the right direction. Berry lifted as the game went on. Marshall was OK as a key back. Visentini good in patches. Lai was ok.

Soldo very disappointing, Walsh is a lot further away than even i thought. Finlayson has so much ability but zero focus, mental strength or desperation. McEntee was non existent And Charleson is just such a giant bust.

Agreed it was extremely frustrating to watch, Soldo appears to be doing no more than just going through the motions, as you suggest Finlayson has tons of ability, `but zero focus,' Walsh is still miles away from being AFL quality, and Charleson is `a giant bust.'

On the plus side, I thought there was a lot to like about Visentini (as per usual), and Lai definitely has something worth working on.

kgerlach01 only took a week for Nick Moore to get back into form. 23 touches and 4 goals a decent effort. :thumbsu:
I just hate seeing people who don't go to games and just read stat sheets, and they act like experts. Glad he shut em up.

Like my cousin said, he's a defensive midfielder, he doesn't have to rack up disposals to have a good game and his tackling pressure is second to none.

Thought i'd go watch this, thinking we got in free as part of our afl membership. Apparently not. $22 entry. Oof - not in this economy. Off back home I go to watch it on the telly
I get in free to all SNAFL home games at Alberton. Mrs Dore and I got in for free tonight. Just downloaded our digital tickets in the app and scanned in no problem.

Reading this thread back having not watched the game is great, because 95% of the posts are 'player X is shit, player Y is shit, our coaches are shit, delist everyone, if any one of these useless campaigners play a minute of AFL we'll probably fold' and every now and then Ross pops in with 'Port Adelaide leading 800 to 3'

I wandered out and watch my first sanfl game for years. First of all how good is alberton oval. The grass area next to the club rooms makes it so good if you are taking kids or want a genuine area to kick the footy.
Jack Watkins , brilliant game and needs to be on a afl list.
Whitlock, has filled out a lot in 6 months, I really liked the way he attacked the pack mark, uses his body to move those in front of him and we won’t lose pack marks when he is in the contest. The small forwards will feast on this.
Vistentini, as we all know we have a good one here, not quite ready for the number one spot but is now the number 2 ruck and he will overtake sweet, it is just a matter of when.
X Walsh, yeah I see what you guys like not afl ready but neither is Rads. We need to develop him.
Lai wow serious pace can we teach him how to play the lock down role on the small forwards, he will be able to turn defence into attack and also be able to defend the ball that gets out the back.
Barrett, really solid game, loved his poise and kick. He use to be a bull at a gate, really developing his game. I would play him ahead of McEntee.
Williams had a moment where he avoided getting a hard ball,he would need to get that out of his game before I would ever pick him for afl.
Marshall was really good in the one on ones. He could easily find his way back onto our list.
Berry excellent early, ran out of petrol in the last half and struggled to get over the ground in the last quarter. Something to build on in the future.
Lorenz had some very good moments and some very average moments. Needs to find the consistency at the top.
Based on last night the others are a mile away from afl.
Of the south boys
Grocock has the real competitive beast about him. Finds shots on goals in different ways although not tall he is ****ing strong, I would be happy to have him on our list.
Hargreaves is better than some of the guys on our list and should get a crack at afl football.

Oh well back to local footy next week

I watched the first half live and the second half this morning on replay. South are almost as young as we are and were not great last year. It’s good our guys won and played better after HT, but there are too many low-ceiling or unreliable AFL-listed players in our SANFL side. That’s the reality. Any of Anastosopoulos, Charleson, Williams, McEntee, Finlayson, Soldo, Jackson would need a big reversal in form or attitude to play beyond this year. Last night was also not a great advertisement for Walsh or Lorenz IMO. It shouldn’t surprise - most of these guys were lowish picks and have been coached by a poor development team

It was an extremely frustrating watch.

Yea Sweet sucks. Only leading the entire comp for hitouts. We should drop him for Dante. Great call.
Did I say Sweet should be dropped anywhere? I go watch the Maggie's and Power. Didn't go last night admittedly due to family commitments but watched what I could. I don't just read stats. Feel free to disagree but don't say "great call" when it's not a call I've made.

Went in the oval at halftime, couldn’t believe how dewy the oval was. Would explain why it was scrappy at times.
For me there’s a lot to like about our draftees of last year. They all look like they have AFL attributes. Berry ran all day, was always looking to create something with his running and kicking rather than find a cheap kick sideways. Leave him there for a month to develop.

Lot to like about Lai, few passages of play that make you sit up and take notice. Really good size and takes the game on.

Barrett hits the contest and was really clean when he got the ball in hand. Passage of play I think in the 2nd all 3 of these boys and Whitlock went coast to coast to get a set shot on goal. Was good to watch.

Finlayson is the most frustrating footballer of all time. Warming up pre match he had a beautiful set shot routine, would’ve kicked 10 straight from 45. Get to the game and he’s using a totally different technique. So much talent that will go to waste.

enjoyed the game . I thought Dante was pretty damn good , Soldo was ok but Dante looks to have gone past him, look forward to seeing him in the ones at some stage soonish.
Didn’t mind Jackson , Lau looks ready to go if a spot opens up for him , Anasta and Barrett were quite good .
Watkins was excellent. Whitlock looked like a baby giraffe but showed a few glimpses . Hopefully the start of better things to come

There's a lot of tall about Lai's size.

Do people think he could go inside if given the opportunity?
I think Lai could be anything. He has the athleticism and power of Bergman, probably more speed but not quite as tall. From his early signs, I’d be really disappointed if he doesn’t carve out an exciting AFL career.

Reckon we have recruited well from the 2024 crop: Lai and Cochrane seem big bonuses. Berry, Moraes and Whitlock all look promising. Barrett was low risk and is worth a couple of years on the rookie B list.

Bold statements.
