oh they will lose their shit if we finally get value from a NGA selection...
and im here for all of it.....

Go Catters
It'll be doubly funny if JUH gets to Geelong and gets his shit together

That'll be two NGA prospects (that should have been Geelong's anyway) and voila!

Demons will want to make a stand and ask for a lot for him, and it will depend on what our other trade goals are.

I mean just look at Smith, he wasn't producing to this level at the Dogs before he did his knee. And with Treloar and Macrae gone they would love current Smith smashing the midfield for them like he is for us.
I have no doubt no one at Melbourne is really enjoying being there.
I still don't get why they got rid of McRae - he is tearing it up at the Saints!

Actually, what are the details of JUH? Wasn't he meant to be in Geelong's area before a change by the AFL?

Interesting how much we've benefited from the
Academy system....just not really our own :p

He was being mentored by Stokes before academies were a thing. Academy lines were drawn and he was on the Bulldogs side so Stokesy wished him well went on with mentoring in the Geelong zone.

Tbh the life experience Stokes had available to share and guide him with, the Bulldogs academy cut him off from that and probably ruined his career before it started

From afar, the thing I’ve most admired about Geelong over the last two decades is the quality of people in your playing group. Selwood, Hawkins, Dangerfield etc...you always knew what you’d get. Ultimate team players.

We’ve had talent, but team harmony and selfless footy have been recurring issues. It’s why we had to trade out guys like Stringer, Hunter, and more recently, Baz.

The only player Dogs supporters would want back is Dunkley. He was the glue guy – the defensive anchor in midfield and the ultimate team man. He left because of issues with Hunter and Baz.

Kennedy is our Dunkley replacement. Swapping him for Baz makes no sense when the team is finally clicking.
Kennedy has been an incredible pickup for the Dogs.

I can't see how Carlton let him go - but their loss is your gain.

You're absolutely right that you need some grunty mids who'll just do the job and do it well without flair or flourish and I agree that Kennedy is definitely that exact player.

I actually think if we somehow (not sure how) landed Reid and wiped out all of our picks that it would increase the chances of landing Butters FA.
I agree that we cant trade for both. But if Butters did choose us, and we had no draft capital, does it make it more or less likely Port match and force a trade? Or does it make compensation more attractive?

I honestly think GWS matched us for Cameron because we held so many draft picks at that time. They knew they could get a better deal than compensation. So they went after it. But if we didnt, do they bother? Not so sure.

Who knows but its exciting to think about lol This is why I love this thread. Even if it all ends up in crushing dissapointment.
I think this in concert with the "new coach, new direction" will see Butters get to us without much fuss.

Fishgutz is my favourite poster on this board. Has good Intel and shares it.

And your last paragraph is 100% right. Players make promises to join clubs and change their mind. Doesn't mean the information at the time was not accurate.

Back on Geelong - just brilliant planning. We wipe out our draft picks but will continue to pick up academy players this year and no doubt, overlooked mature aged players.

Add Reid, Sdk and we are absolutely cooking. Hopefully one of Clark or Clohesy comes on. Bruhn returns and continues to develop. Conway and Edwards return from injury.

I only hope we avoid Oliver out of the names linked. I think JUH is worth the risk and he has the talent to become the best player in the league.
I think TB is lost. Very hard to keep reputation intact in such a case. It will divide the supporter base tbh and will not look good to both media and sponsors.

Whilst they did allow an NRL player back after such a case, however, I’m sure the media frenzy and pressure won’t be similar. It will go bananas and I think the AFL will be looking to move on quickly.

It's a convenient narrative to say that someone like Dunkley only left because of other players. It makes absolutely no sense when you take even a moment to think about it, though.

Even if the issue was primarily with 'characters' like Hunter and Smith, who is ultimately responsible for keeping those players in sync and not causing untoward issues for the group? It's absolutely the coaching staff and football department.

So any reflection on how 'untenable' it was to play with Lachie and Lenka is also a profound reflection on how ineffective the powers that be at the club were in dealing with the mavericks.

So whether Doggies fans feel it fits the narrative or not, Bevo is definitely in the thick of it. You can't supposedly be 'all good' with the coach while he's also part of setting a culture that allows behaviours that you think are selfish, indulgent and costly to the group at large.

And I think Dunkley is actually the most interesting departure of all, really. Didn't just want out at the end of one season. Was forced to stay and was then just as adamant that he was still getting out of the place twelve months later. Hardly speaks of a player who was really enjoying the coaching environment and just wanted the odd player to pull their head in to make everything sweet.
Hallelujah!

I've been on the "fish rots from the head" train for ages. Beveridge (who the buck stops with) is leading a shit, isolationist "us against the world" culture.

And I love Bontempelli, he's my favourite non-Geelong player, but he doesn't strike me as the sort of club captain to bring people into line either.

So you end up with good guys like Dunkley looking for more professional environments and pinheads like Stringer, Hunter, and Dahlhaus running the show while Bob Murphy turns a blind eye to focus on Japanese vinyl imports or whatever.

At a stretch, the Bulldogs hierarchy eventually figured it out and then went hard the other way, clamping down on the "wayward spirits" like JUH and Smith

Agree that Kennedy and Baz play different roles.

Smith would be an upgrade on your wingmen though - he plays on ball for us because we are weaker in midfield. But he does a fair bit of his work with wingman running patterns.

I don't think you're missing him now because Freijah and Richards are going so well. Treloar's best days are probably behind him though and playing Bont forward/mid 60-40 is something it'd be nice to do in his latter years. Smith would've provided good coverage in light of those factors for the next 5 years. Sanders might be able to.

If you asked a fan of any club none of them would want Kennedy over Smith. If they do then they don’t enjoy watching their team win games. There’s a reason Dogs players leave and play better at other clubs.
I don't think that's a very fair comment (though I agree with the part about players wanting out of the Dogs).

Remember what happened when we had GAJ,.Selwood and Dangerfield in the midfield together?

It sucked - or at the very least it wasn't the dominating force everyone thought it was going to be because it was so unbalanced.

In a vacuum, yeah people would take Smith over Kennedy - but footy isn't a vacuum. Kennedy fits the needs of Footscray more than Smith does - he's a different player and balances their best 22 better.

Footscray are potentially a better team with Kennedy than they are Smith even if Smith is the better player.

Even forgoing that, the reality is that Smith was never going to stay at the Dogs - what else are they going to do?

Obviously but it does impact negotitations, without the risk of losing him for nothing, they'd be no impetus for Port to negotiate after matching a deal.
If a list manager matched and sent a free agent to the draft because the destination club refused to give up fair assets then that's on the destination club. Sure.

If a list manager matched and sent a free agent to the draft because they didn't let the departing club choose the destination then I think that's an entirely different scenario.

They should have given us all the way around the coast to Warnambool! 🤬

For anyone else unsure of the boundaries, they're here:

They're not sending a free agent to the draft. That's a bit silly

They don't need To. They know he will either stay with them for 1.8mil (whatever is on the Matched offer sheet) or he will pick one that is willing to trade multiple r1s for him. It wouldn't get as far as him delisting himself.

Believe it or not our 2018 midfield performed well: 2nd in the league for scores from stoppage differential.

We were badly lacking elsewhere, particularly up forward. GAJ massively helped our forward mix the next year and we brought in Rohan who had a career best year. Miers burst onto the scene. Our forward line went from league worst, to average.

Kelly went up a few levels in midfield to cover GAJ's absence.

Prime GAJ, Dangerfield and Selwood would've been the best performing midfield in the AFL era, make no mistake about that. 2013-2014 or 2016 the only years it would've been close to possible. Dangerfield and Ablett's peaks didn't overlap though.

Mr Meow: if I could be granted one wish from the past dozen years to come true it would be to have seen GAJ, Danger and Selwood play together all in their prime, it would have been football heaven for me and no doubt for tens of thousands of other Cat supporters!
