Provisional 2025 Draft order

I really liked Hustwaite in his draft year and hoped we'd take him. Very interesting prospect with his size and traits. Good to see he's putting it together in the VFL and not in the 1's. No idea if we could shake him loose though.

So we're now linked with (in terms of midfielders);

Sheldrick
Erasmus
Dev
Will Phillips
Bont (loosely)

Am I missing anyone? Excluding Bont as the obvious choice, I'm leaning towards Phillips, then Erasmus, Sheldrick and lastly Dev...in fact I'd rather take a punt on a late pick than waste a spot on Dev, but understand we are thin for that age bracket in the middle.
Of all Phillips/Erasmus/Sheldrick, who would be just good bodies around the midfield who may have upside, I would be happy to use a 3rd round selection for any of those.
They are really fillers for a few years and hoping for better while all the draftees develop, so 3rd round for a top 30 player would be a decent spend draft wise imo.

What?

My expectation would be that whoever we draft with that top 5 this year will start on flanks and slowly be transitioned into the middle. Like what we did with Hewett.

Let's hypothesise that we take Sharp and Rodriguez. I suspect Sharp is good enough to spend a fair bit of time in the middle (although my wanting to draft him has nothing to do with this - I want the best player, plug and play, or not). So we start them on flanks. We still have Harley, Hewett, Hough, Ryan, Graham etc to run through the midfield. Maybe even Yeo. We still have Gross, Grego etc to run through the Beagles.

The Beagles should not be considered when drafting. We have enough midfielders anyway.

So apart from those top end picks, we have some NGA talent we'd like to draft, and maybe some KPD and SF types. We shouldn't be recruiting for the Beagles.

I'm not saying recruit for the beagles, I'm using the fact we can't fill two our team with the mininimum amount of mids as a way to describe our complete list imbalance.

I'd be very happy to take Sharp and Rodriguez, they might be my preferred two, but drafting them doesn't mean we don't need additional (mature) mid fielders. We absolutely should be prioritising one of Erasmus, Sheldrick, Phillips.

We're 18th for most midfield statistics -and by a long way- and any that we aren't 18th in, we're bottom four. CP differential, Centre Clearances, stoppage clearances, ground ball differential.

We need to both immediately improve the midfield, while also investing in high end midfield talent in the draft.

While we are at it can we build a ruckman that can tap it too our midfield as well? Maybe just play A. Reid as a full time ruckman since he can't kick goals? Then draft a tall forward that can kick goals like shanahan but aren't we turning him into a key back?

C'mon, if you were arguing Dev against a pick in the 30s, you might take the punt, but a guy on the fringes of the reigning premiers would be worth more than a dart at the board after 40. I think people underestimate how many players fail to make the grade. It's about half and at pick 40-50, it's probably closer to 80 per cent.
I just think he's a hipster douchebag.

Personally my preference is who's the cheapest. Cheap targets only plz.

These players are fringe players for a reason and adding them for depth is fine but you don't want to overpay because their club suddenly starts pulling the "he's a required player" schtick. Opposite to what stupid prick Nesbitt did basically.

Dev - Free to good home, pretty self explanatory.

Phillips - Next cheapest. 5th year in the AFL, hasn't established himself in even a basket case like North melb. Could bully them into letting him go for peanuts.

Erasmus - Until recently a case could be made for him to be de-listed by Cockburn entirely. Annoying timing for him to start looking like an AFL quality footballer recently.

Sheldrick - Pass for mine. I like me some thicc Angus but don't think Swans let him go cheaply and he's probably not good enough to target and pay a proper price for, so i'd be letting this one play out.

If the VFL won't give us a priority pick, i'd like to see us extract another 2nd rounder for Bailey Williams. Could be handy.

Busslinger is someone i genuinely want us to go after. Not sure how long that bloke wants to sit there playing VFL.

Oscar leaves.

Eagles Pick 2 and freo 1st and 2nd to dees
Rivers and Erasmus to us
Picket to freo

So we get Rivers and Erasmus and lose pick 2?

That sounds like an absolutely terrible deal for us.

Pick 2 gets us Rivers and Erasmus

Freo get Pickett for their R1, R2 and Erasmus

Melbourne get pick 2, Freo’s R1,R2 for Pickett and Rivers

Good for Freo

Shit for us

If Fremantle want Kozzie badly enough they may be willing to do a salary dump with Sean Darcy. Get him for about 60% of his salary and Freo pay the rest for balance of his contract, providing he is fit. Include Erasmus in a package deal.

Pick 2 for Trent Rivers is undoubtedly one of the funniest things I’ve ever read.

Freo really should take us out for dinner before fukkking us so hard like this.

To break your deal down.

Erasmus and Rivers are not worth pick 2. Rivers is worth a pick 10-12 and Erasmus is worth a pick in the late 30's at best.

Freo get Kozzie for pick 14 and pick 32.

In your scenario you value Rivers (and Erasmus) as being worth signficantly more than Kozzie.

I don't think even Freo board would be this audacious. It's a foul deal and should be put down.

Trade for Sheldrick, Erasmus and Phillips. Draft CDT and Duursma.

Win flag in 3 years.

Kiss each other.
