In most cases the clubs have invested heavily in a player and then aren't able to extract the best outcome for them in a trade. As the player usually says I want go to a specific club even though other clubs could offer a better trade deal.
Definitely a disadvantage for the club losing the player, but not for the team gaining the player. I also think that generally trades are reasonable anyway, apart from when players are out of contract.

But even if the majority of clubs don't love it, I think it definitely helps player retention and fans ability to invest in their own players, knowing they will most likely stick around - so overall a good outcome for the game which relies on fan engagement (and our $$$'s).

Look at Baz. From what i have read and heard he was a die hard hawks fan. A Ginni style nuffie.
He was but he ran out of suitors the longer he sat out of the game in 2024 and hit the bags.
Geelong backed themselves in to keep him out of trouble(but they’ve had their work cut out for them already), culminating in a trip down the high from the head of the AFL to tell him to pull his head in.

I would have thought the news of Hawks being near the front of the queue for Rowell according to a poster on the D&T board would have been mentioned here.

Would make a lot of sense of our positioning of Worpel’s contract.

Rowell would be absolutely beyond amazing, so good in the contest - woukd adress our biggest weakness. Rowell, Day, Newc, Ward and McKenzie with another 12 months development is an elite midfield.

How much better is he than Worpel? Obviously in raw talent he is, but, price tag wise, that'll be the important part of the swap over from worps to Rowell.

It’s not particularly close, Rowell when up and going is one of the best in the competition. If hawthorn think this is as good as Worpel will ever be can definitely see why they would be at least open to bringing Rowell in and letting Worpel go

Ollie Florent attracting interest from Vic Clubs, contracted til 2029 having a down year has lost his place under Dean Cox.

Was a hawks fan growing up, I wonder if we'll have a look.

Could be a good cheap addition given Swans may want to get out of his long term contract.

How has he dropped off so badly? Looked very handy a few years back, think we might have even been on the receiving end of some of his better games?

26 though, still plenty of time to regain form.

Yeh form dropped off a cliff this year. I don’t see a need for him personally, certainly not getting a game in our back 6 over our other smalls in Amon, Impey and Hardwick. His only value would be as a winger or mid so it a pass from me.

Butters management has spoken to several Vic clubs, including hawks. If a club could make it happen this year with a deal for Port they’d be at an advantage of being chosen. But the strong view is that Port will be very unreasonable while he’s still in contract and so it might have to spill into next year and free agency in which case more clubs will be throwing huge money at him.

If Rowell was in fact the player we were after but has decided to stay then you’d think that Worpel gets done. Not saying this is what has happened but if so then you’d hope that there was a clear communication with him on the process.

Worps was going to get done regardless.
