The 35 year old example that proves the rule
Justin Madden, Mervyn Neagle, Roger Merrett, , maybe you even remember John Barnes,... shall I go on. And forget the 35 years stuff, it was you who used the word ever.

Ground just gave way on him. Lucky he didn't do his ankle there.

Umpiring standard was terrible all night but neither side benefited from it. I can name just as many terrible decisions that favoured Sydney as did the dogs. Umpires seriously need to learn what incorrect disposal and holding the ball look like

One would argue that 99 times out of 100 there is a genuine attempt. Incorrect disposal is never called these days

SCG copped a flogging and didnt recover from a concert held earlier in the year, that mentioned it's not up to par. A lot of players were losing their feet & lucky none were injured as a result of the crappy surface

Must be the lifecycle of the ground, just under 10 years since they abandoned a first class cricket game at the ground due to an unsafe outfield.

So tackled and dropping the ball? Lost count of the number of times that happened (both teams) and went unwhistled at 29. And for the record I'm an umpire for 20 years and now umpires coach. in the 4 years since myself and other coach have taken over umpiring standards have increased dramatically. It's not a hard game to umpire, it's made hard by idiots that give excuses instead of constructive criticism.

Frustrating to watch for swans there so many good things but missed the easy shots on goal, even though pressure was great I thought tackling was a bit off, lots of missed tackles.
Yeah for sure. They're the 2 things that really hurt us in the end.

Especially that last kick that dribbled to a Bulldogs player and went back over his head for a set shot 25m out.

Also liked the non effort to get out marked on the wing and turn it over when the Dogs kicked the match winner.

But facts are he goes missing in finals every single time. But he’s great for Super Coach…
At that stage he had been cramping but had a massive game and been very good the last couple of months. Probably leading our b&f

My understanding is that dropping the ball in a tackle is allowed so long as you make an attempt to get a foot or fist to it.

For the same reason players who get tackled with one arm pinned but the ball in the other arm get done holding the ball if they don’t drop it and attempt to kick or punch it.

Is this what you are teaching?

Andrea Bocelli. How is he a stadium worthy act? Boggling.

It's an unfortunate fact of life that these major stadiums are extremely expensive to build and maintain, and that in most instances the AFL is a co tenant not an owner. So there is great pressure on the stadium owner to maximise income by holding as many events as possible including in the middle of seasons of traditional sporting tenants. Many of these events are incompatible with optimum turf maintenance. When we say AFL is a multi million dollar organisation, we tend to forget that in financial terms it's a minnow relative to the EPL or NFL, who can pick and choose when they allow other events at their grounds. I doubt if they would ever allow a rival code to play on their ground the night before one of their competition games, as happened just last week in Perth.
Have a look at some of the grounds on which footy was played as recently ad the late 80s/early 90s if you want to see players having trouble holding their footing

You are correct they don't get pinged for incorrect disposal. They do however get pinged for holding the ball if they have had prior chances to get rid of the ball as did all the players in my examples. My post was about both rules not being correctly adjudicated. Their has only been 1 AFL match that I'd give an A to the standard of umpiring and that was the Essendon vs Sydney match earlier in the year. No 10 warnings, empty threats and posturing from the umpires just blow your whistle, pay the infringement and get out the way. This is the only way to correctly umpire a game.

Congrats to the Dogs the answered every challenge and there were many but their class and composure was too good. Swans too many unforced turnovers to really threaten eventually. Season done (already was) but glad they didn’t give in tonight.

Just checked and see that Sydney play Freo, GWS, Brisbane and Geelong on the way home. Bring that effort and they’ll win maybe a couple of those. Straighter kicking tonight and it’s easily a different result. They could play a big part in ladder positions.

What I enjoyed tonight was that Bont, Dale, Richards, West, Libba and Lobb weren't at their very best and we won at a very tough place against a resurgent opponent.

Freijah terrific, loves a goal that boy. Best game I've seen from Sanders in 1.5 years, not super quick, but got the footy smarts. Bramble was in droppable form first 10 games but gave us a lot of run, seemed to be the only Dog player not to fall over in that outer pocket.

Having a quiet red, very happy.

That was full on - well played both teams. Reckon the Swans will knock off a few finals' contenders on the run home.

Other sports fight because a player gets a dirty hit. Most NHL fights are just contrived excuses to stop the game. It's shit.
Absolute rubbish. Most NHL fights happen because some weak jabroni takes a run at a star player from the other team, or is payback from an incident from a previous game.

Payback for a previous game, and there's the problem. In any other sport you settle the score there and then but no, they just randomly start fighting and stop the game.

Agree! Freijah is a star.. Super cool head and hard to believe only 19!
