I'm not sure Gawn is a lock.

I think he should be (I'm biased), but it depends on how much they listen to Champion Data. Daniel Hoyne was adamant a week ago that Xerri and Grundy were ahead.

Where they have it over Gawn is clearances and tackles. Xerri has 7.0, Grundy 6.0 and Gawn 5.4. Their tackle numbers easily beat Gawn's.

All 3 have had All Australian caliber seasons, in the past there have been ruckman selected not having a season as good as these 3 simply because you need a ruckman. Personally I think 2 should be selected with 1 on the bench as this is an honour team and not a team that is playing a game where you don’t need 2 specific rucks.

But I’m going to put on my biased Melbourne goggles on and make the case for Gawn.

Yes the other 2 are ahead in clearances but Gawn is still a good clearance player, top 30 on average, 19th in total clearance across the league.

Gawn though clears those 2 in marking ability, which should be a strength you look for in someone tall. Gawn has taken the most contested marks in the league this year with 51.

Gawn also averages the 4th most contested possessions in the league ahead of the the other 2.

Gawn has more inside 50’s, more rebound 50’s, more interceptions possessions, more metres gained, more score involvements than the other 2.

Better Clearance player yeah Xerri, better overall game I’m picking Gawn.

Now statistically looking specifically into ruckwork, all 3 are great but Grundy would be first followed by Gawn.

Gawn: 76.2 ruck contests, 36.4 hitouts at 47.8%, 10.0 to advantage at 13.1% from ruck contests

Grundy: 72.1 ruck contests, 36.0 hitouts at 50%, 10.5 to advantage at 14.6% from ruck contests

Xerri: 85.0 ruck contests, 34.7 hitouts at 40.8%, 10.2 to advantage at 12% from ruck contests. (Not including today’s game)

Like I said they all deserve a spot and yes I’m biased but Gawn’s marking ability is a difference maker from the other 2 and overall game has him in the team for me, but I think 2 of them should be in, splitting hairs between Xerri clearance work vs Grundy’s better ruck work.

I think you'll find they contributed to that pettiness a fair bit. But also I'm not a mod so couldn't tell you the reason
Yeah thanks mate, I am unsure as well. Just a general feeling, I have from some of the bans and suspensions. Use to love the character on this board and the left field opinions, seems a little too tight around the edges now.

Except it does mean something, because when determining Hall of Fame (which is an honour which should matter) they always reference the number of AA.

Luke Breust kicked 30+ goals a year his entire career (a total of 12 times - where Milne and Betts only managed it 9 times each) except for one year where he missed nearly half the season and the last 2 years when he has been Sub far more than he has played. Would 2 x AA be enough to get him in if he hadnt also won 3 flags? Because most players win 0 flags (like Milne and Betts).

And if AA becomes over time more heavily influenced by HOF, essentially that will start to lose its value and maybe it's importance too.

If Australia had to pick a national squad and team for a fictional AFL world cup, I don't think the head coach would give two shits about who the AA selectors pick.

Rhylee West is on 59 (37 goals and 22 goal assists)

Darcy would be way too far behind now, wouldnt he? Wont be ruck and wont be key forward.
Probably. Hes played 6 games less than most others so depends if they are looking at the season in totality, or what he delivered in those games he did play. Bont would be a shoe in if its the latter, but probably 50/50 now.

I don’t think Judson Clarke has played a game this year? ;)

Things are conspiring against Serong unfortunately he's had a couple of less influential games at the wrong end of the year and we're favourite to finish 9th.
It's a shame because he's carried the team for so much of the year, I feel for the bloke

Not to mention that, on a more practical level, most of the top 100 players in the league would have making AA as a trigger for a bonus written into their contracts

AA selection panel set the precedent last year to pick Gawn as the AA ruck this year, by picking Cameron as their squad of 44 player last year.

Cameron wasn't the 2nd best ruck last year unless you scale the importance of rucks intercept possession more than most people would, which they did last year. But now then if you apply that same logic, you have to pick Gawn, because he and Cameron are streets ahead of the rest of the league in intercept possessions - Cameron 5.2 p/g and Gawn 4.5 p/g are in their own field vs. Tim English, rank 3 at 2.9 p/g.

I've been pretty unsure about whether Gunston will get in for much of the season with how tight it has been outside of Cameron (and perhaps expecting a drop off at some point given his age and tough draw to end the season). However, barring some kind of final round anomaly (such as Naughton and Thilthorpe kicking 10+ each) I think Gunston mightbe in now.

To be 2nd for goals and 2nd for goals + assists, despite playing 3 games less than most of his competitors, surely sees him selected? Helpful as well that he is the ideal 'type' to select as a '3rd tall'.
