im pretty sure our accuracy in front of goal has fallen away too, which compounds the issue, especially when they are close games
Absolutely. Schultz missing from the boundary in the 3rd quarter (from memory) gave me a flashback to Lipinski's miss from a similar spot against Hawthorn last week.

We have been a moments team for the last 2 or 3 years and unfortunately we're missing or losing the crucial moments. The margins are all so small at this level that games are won and lost on moments, like when Anderson broke from the centre stoppage and goaled after we had just taken the lead.

I try not to think of that but I'm a big believer in "speed kills"
Imagine if you had a Heeney or someone like that in the middle of the ground who you could kick to with confidence instead of hoping for a boundary throw in near the opposition’s d50.

They did get us on the rebound a few times but that's work ethic on our part. The flooding won't survive in finals
One of those times was the result of an accidental kick by Curtin that landed fortuitously in the centre square for Adelaide who were able to transition out the back, eventually leading to Cumming kicking a great conversion following Keays' pass.

That passage of play was very similar to Watson's goal the week before, where Hawthorn's half-forwards/mids were willing to gamble forward of the stoppage, as they expected a quick transition if the ball went from inside to out. It was something they highlighted on the Fox coverage at the time and always looks awful as it's usually means 3 or 4 opposition players are streaming forward unopposed.

The Cumming goal on Saturday night was more down to bad luck; the Watson goal and Hawthorn's showing to me suggested that we had deviated from our structures and were being punished accordingly, rather than simply being unlucky.

lets be honest , he is still a spud ,but the alternative is a turnip

Frampton? A spud?

lol no

Outside the Hawthorn game he's actually been incredible. I think 2 goals is still the most he's copped all season. Wouldn't be surprised if he's statistically (as in goals copped form direct opponent) the best key back in the comp

That's cruel. Would absolutely love Heeney, what a player
I know it’s pointless to dwell on what we don’t have. We have plenty to be thankful for. No team is perfect.

Look at how we played in the last 10 minutes against Adelaide, though. Go on the attack and make things happen!

I would much rather die by our own sword trying to play like that more often, than to play in our shells and let the opponent dictate the outcome.

Spinny, we can’t even score 10 goals a game. We’ve been worked out. Everyone now knows to push us wide, flood our F50 and then use superior foot speed to hurt us on the counter-attack. We have lost confidence, boldness, connection and potency.

The arrival of September will not magically see us return to playing the way we did in May & June, no matter how much you want to believe it will.
And still, we should have beaten the Top side on their home deck. Massive reversal with great improvements and dominance in virtually all key metrics.
Do really think there’ll be another game where we have 37 more I50’s and lose.

If you can’t see the performance was a dramatic improvement leading into September, then I can’t help you.

Mate, they won and we lost. The match was played mostly on our preferred terms and we still couldn’t get it done. We kicked three goals after quarter time. Yep, three. They kicked eight.

So, if you really think Nicks is off his food after that win, then Fly must feel like he has a permanent case of Morning Sickness, given how we’ve gone in losing five of the past six games.
You better send an email to Fly and add this post - just so you can temper his enthusiasm about his teams dramatic reversal.

This isn't deliberate or submitting or 'letting'.

As has been explained before, after qt ade upped their pressure, they had to, otherwise they were looking at getting belted. Weather played a factor also, much more difficult to pull of the 45 kick into the corridor and too risky, that's why we played boundary for 3 qts.

In a nutshell the two teams came to an arm wrestle, neither being able to break the deadlock, and ade got lucky.

The opposition does have say and they're gonna oppose our transition, by upping the pressure.

The evolution of a football team is that having one game plan that you do well isn't going to be enough anymore. Coaches and players are getting better, smarter and more capable every year at shutting down your 1-wood. This season and going forward you need to be able to win in more ways than one, which we are discovering now. Teams that can switch up their play and be just as effective will be successful. I think these teams right now are Geelong, Brisbane & GWS, I'd be shocked if the premier wasn't one of these three.
You forget we were lauded for exactly this game plan flexibility earlier in the year.

In a way it speaks volumes of our structures and game plan. The fact that sides have resorted to heavy flooding means they have no idea how to beat our structures, we proved that in the first quarter. Sides will want to play their own brand in finals and resorting to heavy flooding means they can't play their more familiar brand. There's hope
Agree - Adel may well have played a different style if it was a cut throat final. Conceding so much territory is not a winning finals formula.

70 odd forward entries can only happen if they're sitting back waiting for us. We can only dream that they would do that in a final

Imagine Nick and Heeney together OMFG

agree to disagree

i shudder to think what an opposition gun forward will do to him on a dry day in a final if he doesn't get help from Howe and Moore

What's been overlooked the last 2 weeks is that Adelaide's much celebrated forward line isn't good enough to win them the flag. They have to be switched on like every other contender.

Adelaide are just like Sydney last year. There is simply no way that side is capable of winning a flag. You'd be licking your lips to get hold of them in the finals. Hopefully results go our way and we get a rematch in the QF.

The only thing I’m hanging my hat on is that Brisbane was clearly the team of the finals last year. They lost 2 of their last 3 games of the regular season games and won it from 5th.
We’ll likely finish 5th and have to get on a roll like them.
I’ll still hope that hawks knock off lions, power somehow do it for Ken and boak next week and finish 3rd.
I’d take cats in a QF at the G in a heartbeat.

The Lions were also copping a flogging by the Giants in the SF before turning on a 2nd half for the ages. They were also down and out in the PF against the Cats before landing the final blow.

Anyone saying we're done and dusted this season has NFI. It's as even a comp as we have ever seen across the top 8 sides. Any given day type of stuff.

We simply must bring the heat like we did against the Crows and we will always be a chance of winning. Our forward 50 connection will click at some point.

Current form - is latest form, against the Top side.
If you don’t see that as a massive reversal in our prospects then you are being disingenuous or obstinate.

People carrying on about our form. We've lost 3 games by under a kick. Fcukin shot ourselves in the foot on Sat night and were royally screwed by the maggots in yellow. The wheel turned and now it's time to step it up a notch against the Dees.
