2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Questions

What's the highest number of free agents signed by any AFL club in a single off-season?

What's the highest number of opposition players signed through any mechanism (trade/free agency etc)?

What's the highest number of opposition players signed through any mechanism (trade/free agency etc) and regularly played in the senior team the following year?

I have a feeling the final answer might be St Kilda 2020 (Ryder, Butler, Howard, Jones, Hill)

I know Essendon 2016 had a few but that should be excluded as it only happened due to the supplements scandal

Expansion teams in first year should also be excluded. GC, GWS etc

I think Lyon is the driver but Bassat the conduit. He's letting Lyon call shots but helping to get shit done to achieve it. Carton are the opposite. No-one has control and decisions are all over the place.

Having an autocrat in charge can be a problem but for club that was a bit lost it's absolutely a positive to redirect our energy in one direction.

It's not like no one knew that Ross was like that.
Don’t they have that poker machine bloke 🤔🤪

Not really sure why so many think we are going out on a limb here and taking risks.

Sometimes not taking risks is the biggest risk of all. The contracts seem reasonable (esp if you look beyond the media), and we are honouring our senior players by giving them a team that can compete.

We have developed a whole big ass crop of young players, that still have years to go before they’re in the beginning of their prime. We will keep adding to that contingent also, whilst rounding out our senior players and setting a competitive standard.

My 2cents, we have nothing to lose. The club is in good hands, just relax and enjoy the ride. Don’t take it for granted.

If Roma goes, we likely have 2 First round picks this year or next.

Even if he stays, we lost this years and bring in Flanders - who we all agree is probably worth a first of some sorts on his own.

I do however take note that Caro gets this exclusive and DOES NOT rule out Cmac.

Either way, future firsts all remain. A lot of youth on the list that ensures no impact to build for 12 months.

The only way Cmac gets done is if the Hawks need picks for a star player like Petracca. It would need to be an opportunistic extra. Flanders seems like more of an obvious one. He'd be crazy to want to stay at the the GC and we'd be crazy not to chase him.

Remember those safe days when we recruited Logan Austin or Austin Logan or whatever his name was? What a time to be a Saints supporter.

Cmac is heading into his 4th season this summer.

He is currently out of the side. Played 12 all year and hasn’t been selected in the senior side in over a month.

I’d say he is more on a knife’s edge right now and could be cannon fodder trade material in 12 months if the status quo remains.

I'm not sold on him being a difference maker but how good is it having players want to play for us.

I think he'll make a difference. He's an exciting player who makes things happen. If he can score 30 plus goals and help Snags and King score by making the defence accountable he will be very valuable. We looked better when Collard and Butler had good games. Both are unreliable for different reasons. He can also win clearance at stoppages which in the forward half is very handy. Lets Hall go up on the ball without losing anything forward of the ball. Actually some similarities but Ryan more high leaping.

AS IT STANDS:

SIX Jack’s
FOUR Liam’s
THREE Max’s

Really keen to see how the trade and draft period shakes out, could see some major changes in this space. The addition of a Jevan would be titillating.

Incl. probable trades in, not incl. possible trade outs/delistings I.e. max heath to Melb.

I’m with Gringo here. He is a pretty big POD in a very vanilla side. Even if he only manages his. Customary 12 disposals and a goal. I’m pretty confident in saying he probably creates 2-3 more a game aswell.

As a fan. I’d also go just to watch him jump on someone’s head aswell

Which is currently his third year. He was in Phillipou's draft and it isn't that unusual for a developing player in a finals bound side. I don't think the Hawks are keen to off load him so would need something for them to cut him. Josh Ward barely played until this year and he seems have been there since the dawn of time.

Loving the narrative in the media (this time Malthouse etc) stating that it is typical St Kilda paying overs for mediocre players. TBH do not give a flying fk what the external narrative is - if we nail this off season I'll be damn happy.

To do that I think we still need to lock in Flanders, that would cover all lines and address an immediate need - the midfield.

TDK, Ryan and Silvagni are legit without giving up draft capital.

WE will not know until this time next year but the in's along with Phillipou, Wilson, King, NWM, Travaglia, Hastia, Tarau, Boxshall, Sharman, Hall, Windhager (please), Owens gives us a very good young squad ready to have a crack.

Add King and Ryan to the forward line with Higgins and I’m pretty sure we’ll be kicking a few more goals next year. I’m looking forward to Round 1 already. I’d better book my flights to Adelaide.
