I'm in a very lucky position that I get to go to some interesting dinners myself. Was at a dinner last week with Sam Mitchell.

Sam said something about the difference between leadership and management. He said leadership is making hard decisions that have to be made, even if everyone doesn't like them.

Management is when everything is going well and you just tweak things to keep it humming.

He talked about the decision to trade out O'Meara and Mitchell. Was a very hard decision that some were not happy with, but he had the vision which is now paying off.

On a side note. Mitchell is absolutely brilliant. The way he thinks about the game is 1st class.

Couple other premiership captains there too.

Alot of very insightful things were talked about.

Also he spoke about game plans. Which I felt was relevant to the Carlton coaching situation and also obviously their game today against GWS.

He said "you don't need the best game plan in the world. You need a consistent game plan that everyone can execute"

Also said "we've got another plan/ style that we could use next weekend against GWS that would be much more likely to beat them... but can we execute it properly? I don't know. It would be a gamble. Is the risk worth it? Or do we go with what we know everyone can execute?"

Hes always looking to develop the game plan as well. And never go backwards. Said he learnt that lesson after 2008 flag. They kept trying to get back to that style over the next 18 months to win again. But it wasn't until they realised 2008 was gone and they needed to find the next thing that they were able to achieve success again.

He still talked about how we were in the top percentile in most categories except for efficiency inside 50. Referenced injuries to important types. If we persist with the outdated game plan of the last few years we aren't going anywhere.

He’s ignoring we are one of the worst teams for disposal efficiency, only 1 elite kick in their position and that’s Boyd and only 4 above average in their position and only Evan’s is damaging (Fogarty for example is another rated above average).

We’ve built the wrong list to suit the Voss game plan all about contesting the ball.

Who are two good kicks but not consistently in the team E Hollands and McGovern and both could be gone at the end of the year. We’ll likely go further back next year.

Yes “the next thing”. 👍

Whilst at Carlton we have been busy the last 25 years trying to copy the last successful thing.

Those expecting an immediate turnaround next year are kidding themselves.

Baby steps starting with increased accountability and GW's "Carlton first" mentality.

Voss might not be the man for the job (the writing is on the wall in my opinion) but we can get started on forward progress next season and he can be a part of that.

TBH, I dont think we'd notice if either were gone. JSOS will leave a bigger hole than McGovern.
Maybe not tangibly on the field too often, but not sure stripping back further will help.

Worst thing we can do is throw our young ones to the wolves in an uncompetitive team and there’s still a faint ray of hope that Motlop can come on (still on 60 games into his career), and McGovern can be a good player when he feels like it 😂

Agree re JSOS

Trade Charlie to GC
Receive Jed Walter in exchange

Two years later...

Trade Jed Walter to WC
Receive Harley Reid in exchange

Calculate Zach Galifianakis GIF
Then Walter turns into Josh Kennedy. And Reid gets touted as our saviour only to play a few finals but ultimately never get there.

Id be stunned if they let three GC Academy kids go
I’d be more stunned that 3 Queenslanders would want to move to Melbourne when they get to play finals from home just like I would be stunned if a lifelong Sydneysider in Gulden would move down when he’s home and at a successful club.

Humphrey did sign a 4 year extension with GC so he does seem to like it up there but he’s the one more likely to move back to Victoria.

But the problem with trading with the Suns is they don’t have draft currency - if Cal Twomeys August phantom draft holds then the 3 GCS academy picks would be bid at a total points score of about 5500 and with the new 10% discount the Suns would need almost 5,000 but they only have 4,200 in hand for this draft. Pick 6 is worth 1659 of those points (and it will be lower once Eagles get pick 2 comp). Only trading their F1 pick would help get them enough points. So point being it’s hard for Suns to give us Pick 6 which when combined with Humphrey would be a close to fair value for Charlie.

Baby steps is too passive.

There is a renovation going on and some heavy lifting to be done.

Foundations are there, need a good fit out.

To be seen if voss sees the project through, at the moment he's a contractor preparing for the master builder

I am totally aligned with Wright sticking it to Curnow's management. He is contracted, he has the problem to satisfy us. If Curnow does not want to play next year, & step out that is on him but that is preferable in my mind than a couple of late 1st rounders because the Carlton Football Club needs to send the football world a message

I read that Paul Connors manages Curnow, Silvagni and TDK. Might have earned himself a ban at the Carlton Football Club with the way he has gone about all this.

Does “GC academy player” feel like it doesn’t mean a lot because the club hasn’t been around very long? I could understand a Swans academy player not wanting to move because of the Swans deep connection and history with their academy. But a GC academy player gives off the vibe that they would be like a national draftee and easier to try to recruit.

You'd want to be confident he is best 22 for us from round one.
Not every highly rated junior becomes a star. You'd want to be confident that he'd be part of a possible future premiership forward-line, which I'm not. On paper, he'd be a huge part of any Curnow trade but I'd be looking at other players and picks.

Connors also managed Trac in the disastrous attempt to invent a move last year. Pretty similar to how the Curnow media is playing out.

Trac sacked Connors and is now managed by Eddie Bett's agency.

Correct. Several of our players were offered approx. 400k more to move elsewhere back when that was the equivalent to a decent best 22 player (i.e. similar money to what we paid Acres to come across) so although performances dropped that's what it's really about.

See above.

Allegedly, some of the group feel like they sacrificed hundreds of thousands of dollars each but we still ended up with the following list turnover:

Out: Ed Curnow (retired), Lachie Plowman, Lochie O'Brien, Zac Fisher, Paddy Dow, Jack Martin, David Cuningham, Caleb Marchbank, Matt Owies, Matt Kennedy, Jack Carroll

In: Elijah Hollands and Nick Haynes. We added Fantasia and Evans late in SSP the last two years. The other additions were all kids who had a low likelihood of helping them win.

If the players thought that taking slight unders was going to allow us to chase elite players, they're kidding themselves. That pact was what allowed us to retain two Coleman medalists, a dual Brownlow medalist, multiple pick 1s etc through their prime. They were the ones who were supposed to drive us to a flag. Plugging gaps around them with budget options like Newman, Hewett, Haynes, Lij etc. was the outcome that came from retaining such a talented core.
