2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Sorry if I missed it ... but did Caroline Wilson report that we have only spent 83% of our Salary Cap this year which incl. Billings & Crouch money?
So the 83% is what we didn't spend in 2025 because of front ended contracts.
So
5 % x 2 years previous saved = 1.83 million
17% from 2025 unspent = 3.111 million
So 5 mill to spend
This does not include a 5% overspend this year = 915k
Billings and Crouch payments = 500k (guess)
No SC increases in current contracts could be 1.5 to 2 million
We don't know any current contracts front loading in 2026 ( except for TDK, JSOS and maybe Aleer).
So at least 5 million, but could be anything up to 6.5 million above SC

This is the thing with trading Marshall and something the AFL surely needs to look at - if a player agrees to frontloading a contract they really shouldn't be able to get out of it later to go and sign a more lucrative one. It's a loophole in the system, and another that is designed to screw over the worse clubs, as they are the ones who are likely to be frontloading contracts in the first place.

If contracted players are traded, they should be traded WITH their contracts upheld (like the NBA) and it actually becomes a part of the whole trade valuation. You could still have a buyout clause or something similar.

If Marshall was frontloaded and is being paid unders now it would increase value as an asset greatly, which means we'd still see the benefit to frontloading him (just not the one we envisioned).
But
What stops Geelong from making an “understanding” with Marshall? (Ok, we can't put anything on paper while you are under this contract, but....)
On paper: AFL rules against inducement and tampering. In practice: not much, beyond the risk of being caught — which is rare unless someone leaks hard evidence. (business introductions, kids schools, etc. very handy for a 30 -year old)

1000x this.
Far too much left to personal interpretation.
Simplify the rules.
And for heavens sake get rid of the 50m penalty when the defender puts so much as a toenail over the mark.
So have personal interpretation for the standing on the mark rule but not the other stuff?! Sorry, I could not help myself! ;)

The supposed richest club in the land asking for assistance 🤯
Won a GF less than 7 years ago and already has their hands out looking for free hits.

Get faarked Wet Toast.

You know the AFL will give it to them because top 8 Eagles = money franking machine.

Mini meltdown on the eagles board because…

“Lachie Reid on 10 saying WC expected to accept a future 2nd rounder for Liam Ryan

With race horses it not unusual to have a companion pony, horse, goat, or even a donkey to keep it company. These personal friends can even travel to the racetrack with the horse. Is this a possible post season player acquisition, to be seen as a companion for our champion stallion Nas?

Calm down.
All of this might be true, but we were not happy to see him go as can be seen by us offering more $$$ than Hawthorn did.
Not being asked to the B&F was a response to him lying to coach and teammates he was staying the day before he left, which is a totally different subject.
And you may not agree, but Tauru and JSOS for Battle is a good return.
What does JSOS have to do with Battle leaving? And it being a good return

Ha ha, the stuff you come out with. Of course the contract offered by the incumbent club is PART of.the herbs and spices.

If Carlton offered $1.2m to JSOS the n he could just accept it. Terrible analogy by you. No rigour at all.

In fact, the opposite is true, Carlton could genuinely offer $1.2m but JSOS leaves to accept $250k and then by your logic, Carlton would get no compo.

No one knows the compo formula, many factors are considered.

Come on man.
Not sure if a pisstake or not? As an unrestricted free agent, the above statement is blatantly incorrect.

Geelong and other clubs have been exploiting that for years and you can garuantee that Rowan being a country boy raised on a cattle farm will be offerred a prime block of land on the peninsular as a part of his deal.

The only thing that might convince him to remain at our club, is the AFL dropping the substitute rule and allowing 5 x players on the bench. Its just waiting to be signed off by the Commission, which will mean most clubs will next year play two ruckman. Swann indicated the 75 rotation rule would remain, so it will be more of a balancing act for coaches.

If Rowan does choose to leave good luck to him if he gets something out of Geelong, he deserves it for all his loyal years of service with our club.

The AFL made a rod for their back when they gave North compo picks. North made back to back prelims and then got multiple years of handouts.

The AFL said they judged it based on a 4 or 5 year window.

Do the same for her Eagles and they are as bad as anyone.

History is irrelevant at that point.

The ****ed part is that it's exactly what our Prez was saying about assisting teams: Clubs in the middle get nothing.

St Kilda, Essendon & Freo have been bouncing in the middle part of the ladder while teams like North & West Coast hit the top four, blow themselves up, and get compensated.

Add in clubs up the top grabbing FAs, plus FS/NGA kids, and the middle of the road teams cop it in both ends!!

The fact that he’s under contract with us would mean they can’t do anything.

Geelong can offer all the extras in the world and Rowan’s contract can be $0 this year because we paid it all in previous years but again, he’s under contract so we can tell Geelong to ****ing off back down the highway.

I've always had the idea that the best defence is one that can control the air, forcing the oppo to run the ball which can be corralled and stifled. I reckon with Wilkie, Jsos, Tauru and Aleer we'll have the skys well covered whilst Hastie is no slouch in that department either.
Add Sincs for run, Stocks for some grunt and there's your group. Having Howard around puts selection pressure on too.

The issue being that group are 2nd & 3rd tall defenders - none can play on the big tall forwards. Accordingly I'd be surprised if fit that Howard is squeezed out, I think the Aleer trade we will be paying for a well paid VFL player.

I still cant believe what we are prepared to give up for Aleer?

Gubby, Lyon and co have obviously never watched Jacob Blight ex-Richmond play. A big strong contested marking full back IMO he would be the perfect replacement for Howard and would cost nothing. The knock on him was a lack of closing speed, but gees if we want a contested marking presence he is it. Plus from what Ive seen Aleer's speed off the mark is really tardy, he has a loping action which takes him some time to get to full speed.

The given, is with that many taller defenders that Caminiti moves forward to CHF.

I don't disagree with WC getting hand outs but I think any hand out has to be used in a trade.

They should be looking to improve next year. They are already getting enough benefits in the draft by finishing last.
Someone has to be last. Let the Eagles rot in that position for all eternity for all I care.

They are as good a candidate as any other club, and undeserving of special compensation at the draft.

They have every advantage you could possibly ask for. They just have a dysfunctional football department.

Players with 75 or more inside 50s - goal assist percentage

27%: English, Peatling, Humphrey
26%:
25%: Ned Long
24%: Bontempelli, Richards
23%:
22%: Max Hall
So top positions are made up from teams with giants forward lines???

well there you go....

I reckon he's a pretty competitive guy and Tassie realistically isn't going to be competitive for 6 plus years. I reckon Tassie should get Ken Hinkley. He's meant to be loved by the players and a really good teacher apparently.

As a one eyed (and two headed) Tasmanian I will call for a review of this post after 3 or 4 years of Tassie being in the comp!

Believe we are learning from the mistakes in how the other new clubs have established themselves. Obviously will take a while for the list to become competitive but I think there are very good people involved in the Devils starting with Benny Gale (CEO) and Derek Hine (Head of Recruiting).

It is starting next year with a full time VFL team in place which will give a pathway and includes a 'golden ticket/s' (not the type of golden some of you snoozers are thinking about) which is a rookie list spot on the main list for some of those coming back to play VFL in Tassie. Currently the majority of our fringe AFL talent leaves the state to play in the SANFL (Norwood has about 10 Tasmanians playing for them) / VFL / Queensland etc to try and get a AFL spot.

Once we get our head out of our arses and build the stadium the team and the state will come together. High performance centre is getting built in a suburb just out of Hobart etc etc

PERSONALLY I’d let Roma go for a second rounder. We don’t have one, we need some points for Fincher and ultimately IN MY OPINION Roma has zero value in our team outside a backup and if TDK needs a spell then I’d rather be getting games into Dodson and Keeler anyway.

Noting the above I don’t think the club would accept anything short of Geelongs first and that’s also absolutely fine, I’d back them to make the right call.

If Roma wants out then IN MY OPINION we should let him go, it’s shitty practice to keep him playing twos while his $1.4-$1.7 replacement is playing (and no I don’t think Roma can play as a CHF or FF)

If he wants to stay and the club thinks he can do the hybrid role then by all means give it a crack.

See above the AFL rule changes he wont be playing in the VFL.

The club will want at the minimum Geelongs 1st round pick, something they can use to bring in Flanders or McKenzie. Given that Geelong look a monty to at least make the GF even that pick will blow out considerably given all the compensation picks, NGA's and FS's, so we may request more.

A pick in the 30s-40s? For a guy we've already half paid for next year? Even their first, which will be late 20s on draft night, is unders for a player like Marshall.

The competition needs to stop propping up Geelong and start actually making them pay for their constant top up players.
