I agree with Worner and Banfield. Cooper is only 20 yo versus McVee is 22, you need to wait and see to be making that call, what of seen of Cooper is a huge upside and his kicking is like Hayden Youngs , a real weapon, it is what I forsee
I don't need to wait. McVee is a better player right now with 60+ games under his belt.

Your making a call off 2 games in defense. The third he got injured. I'm not saying Simpson isn't going to be good but there is nothing wrong with adding McVee to our list.

Liam Reidy isn’t Meek. Be lucky to even get a fourth rounder
Just did the maths on the points and it's pretty much even the trade I proposed - Carlton wouldn't do it.

On last year's points index the same trade would've massively favoured Carlton points wise and provided benefits for both clubs provided Carlton's father son goes in the right range. They would've got more points, we would've got a higher pick.

This proposed trade was about doing a trade that added some value for the club - it was Carlton because we're trading with them anyway. Given this doesn't work best we can hope for is a swap of third rounders (it's three picks difference)

I still think trading our second rounder and third rounders for a higher second rounder is something the club should explore whether that's to get a better pick or get McVee in the door.

People's thoughts on Lloyd Johnston from gold coast?
Drafted as a running small defender, but is being played as a small forward since Rioli and Noble came. Seems yo have plenty of tools from the little I have seen of him, plays either end of the field, can't crack their team.
He's a Darwin boy and homesickness would need to be figured in

I don't think it's an issue adding Mcvee:

Cox Pearce Ryan
Chapman Clark Mcvee

Extended bench means two of the following players will make the best 23 squad: Worner, Banfield, Simpson, Walker.

If we chose to move Worner or Chapman up the field that also frees up room.

Cox Pearce and Ryan in the full back line far too cumbersome, slow and horrible kicks. Also Chapman needs to move out of the back line.

I think the Gold Coast game epitomises the value in bringing in a McVee type. At first I thought "decent player, some untapped potential as a rebounder, but he's not an eye-catching footballer off half back." Not super penetrating or super athletic.

But now looking at it, how many players do we have in the backline that are a jack-of-all-trades? Can defend one-on-one, can intercept, can use the ball, and can win a contested ball at ground level? Probably a part of why Banners stayed in the team is he was winning ground balls, which we were terrible at as a whole in defence.

McVee and Chapman in there (hopefully coming off big pre-seasons) would give you the freedom to play any number of types as the last defender coz they can do it all. Plus both are legitimately good enough to play higher up the ground.

Yeah Butler would be a good get. Reminds me of Switta but cleaner.

If for nothing else then to spite West Coast, probably the only good bit of talent identification that club has done in the past 5 years.

Doubt he leaves Hawthorn now though, like Erasmus wanted more opportunities but tonight solidified his place in their team.

If he’s willing to move West already we’ve gotta jump on him

McVee, Simpson and Walker changes all that, if he comes. I would like Worner into Chapman’s role, push him to train wing/half forward.

Need to see more of Chappy’s strengths. He had a meh year. He’s suitable as an attacking positive player.

We really lack at least one decent winger.
Weddle is such a weapon for the hawks.

This finals series has really highlighted the need for pressure small and medium forwards though.

Huge question marks now whether we can carry 4 talls in attack in a finals series. The extra man on the bench means that one is always there I guess. But then even 3 is a lot. Amiss is going have to up this pressure when the ball hits the deck in a massive way. Even Chol at the hawks has improved hugely in that area under Mitchell.

Switta for all his flaws in terms of converting goal chances is the prototype finals player because of his pressure. But he’s one of the most unreliable players on our list from an injury perspective.

You HAVE to think Walls and co will be going hard to recruit at least 2 pressure small forwards this off season. Despite the fact they have consistently not prioritised this area much in recent years.

I mean that’s clearly our biggest need over everything right? I can’t think of anything else we need so desperately that we don’t have any sort of depth on the list. This off season will be a failure if we can’t cover that need.

Yeah it’s why I laugh when people continually bring up “a big bodied mid” or even to lesser degree wings /hbf-

definitely need upgrades there but at least we’ve got the like of Simpson and Walker (with whan coming through aswell) there and Johnson/ras/odriscoll/chapman/sharp to roll through mids and wings.

Go to small /med fwd and it’s switta/ Bolton with Dudley back up and then absolute 🦗 after that…
It’s EASILY our thinnest AND least talented part of the ground

When Switta, Bolton and Reid are all on together with Freddy and the big 3 that is pretty potent. The 2nd Q against the dogs showed how well it can work.
I’m on who thinks we need gun wingers more than any other area.
The Langdon, Acres, Hill type who link up with the defenders and connect in the transition phase, smart footballers who can gut run all day are crucial.
Sharp was doing it well till he fell off a cliff. Would like to see Chapman tried in the role & bring Simpson, Walker back to defense.

Yes we need small forwards that can pressure but the real difference is ones that can go up the field and win ball and apply pressure.

Butler was up the ground and on the wings at times. I'd throw a 4 year contract at him, he would displace a current forward for sure.

Butler + McVee would be a very good offseason. Positions of need, talent, age profile, not inexperienced.

Where’s all this butler talk coming from though?
He’s from Ballarat is he not, why do people think he would come here?
