If Merrett is our only option it definitely raises what I'd be willing to pay, but that still seems way overs to me for a 30 year old who isn’t in the top 10 mids in the game. I rate Merrett, BTW, but a top ten, another first and a player or 2nd rounder is well above historical value. It depends if we are a live chance for Petrecca or not? If not, I’d thrown in the Worpel compo (end of first round) or F1. The F1 will be close to the Worpel compo anyway in a better draft (assuming Hawthorn make top 4 again, which they should with Day and Merrett in for Worpel)
How would Pies match? That proposed package can be easily matched by plenty of clubs including dogs and pies. I also think Adelaide will throw their hat in the ring for Merrett if it looks like things aren’t going well trade wise. And like I said if it’s true that the relationship is sooo fracture potentially going to Adelaide is better than coming back to Essendon. Do they have any young victorians that could have mutual interest? Who knows, but there’s still plenty of time to find out
I do. But like you have conceded the relationship between Merrett and Essendon is supposedly so bad they he would prefer play anywhere but.You do realise you can NOT trade Merrett and co without their consent right…..
Yeah keep 2-3 players that don’t want to be there, that will work well for the culture of the club and getting future players via F/A and Trade.
He’s gone. You don’t go this far without signing a contract and stay. Hopefully his form elevates the compo from 2nd round to end of first though - we may need it to get the targets over the line.Worpel may not leave yet! I do not feel the compo will be enough for us to let him go…

Pies have plenty of unsigned players that could fetch picks back, they also have future picks. Might be willing to part with some recent draftees not getting a game. How would Pies match?
Dogs definitely wouldn't, don't need him at all
Lol. That sort of stuff never happens in trades anymore. I know it sucks that’s he’s probably going to Hawthorn (of all teams) but these trades invariably get done. Especially if the trading party has the assets to get it done. Just comes down to whether it involves players, picks or a combo. That proposed package can be easily matched by plenty of clubs including dogs and pies. The Essendon mouthpiece is on it now

Worpel is a RFA…. Hawks can force a trade! I can’t see the Cats parting with their 1st round pick or paying enough to get us a first round pick.
Worpel has already stated Hawks or Cats!
Merrett reportedly wants to go to a club that is pretty much a guarantee to make finals, and in all probability go deep into finals.Comparing the Merrett situation to stringers is laughable.
All I’m saying is that if it’s true and the bridges are burnt with Essendon,
Hawthorn then don’t pony up a fair trade.
Merrett might prefer end up at another club rather than going back to Essendon. Which opens the doors to other clubs.
Pies can only trade one f1 (pick 15) - who are their unsigned players/recent draftees that have value to Essendon (and importantly would be willing to go to Dons?). I know their list and don't see any, but happy to be proven wrong.Pies have plenty of unsigned players that could fetch picks back, they also have future picks. Dogs similar situation.
There’s still many weeks to go. Plenty could happen and more clubs could emerge.
There's been players we have purused such as Mackay and Ratagulea (yeh I can't believe it either) where we didn't land them and the reported/spin on it was we pulled out of the race because the price was beyond what we wanted to pay. When's the last time hawthorn committed to a player and walked away? genuinely curious, nothing coming to mind.

The geniuses at Essendon have told everyone that Merrett won't be traded under any circumstances so if I am Hawthorn, I would just sit back and watch this trainwreck play out for the next few weeks. Then offer pick 8 and a F1 late in the trade period. It's a perfectly decent offer given his age.
Why go down the path of trying to push valuable players out who don't want to leave if Essendon aren't going to be reasonable?! Hawthorn would just be taking Essendon's problem and making it their own by pissing off players.
If they don't accept the picks offer, revisit it next year when Merrett asks to leave again.
What I would give to knock the Cats out of the finals and jag the Essendon captain for peanuts in two weeks. Even if it meant we got smoked by the Lions in the big dance. The Essendon mouthpiece is on it now

If Twomey is saying itOof. Onus on the Hawks to get a deal done!
If Twomey is saying it
It’s through Gritted but well Essendon informed teeth
Yeah I’m awareI’m not disputing the truth of it, in fact I’m agreeing it’s probably true!

We're not saying we'll get him cheap.Hawks fans think that Merrett relationship with Essendon being untenable is helping lower his trade value.
If Merrett and Essendon relationship can’t be fixed, and hawthorn don’t pony up in the trade, Merrett might prefer to play at another club rather than Essendon creating a bidding war for him.
I don’t think this is the case but I don’t see how all of sudden hawks are gonna get him cheap because of a couple of comments from players.
Currently Merrett plans to meet both those clubs. Dogs are no guarantee to get butters and who’s to say they can’t try and get both.Pies can only trade one f1 (pick 15) - who are their unsigned players/recent draftees that have value to Essendon (and importantly would be willing to go to Dons?). Again, dogs don't need Merrett!
It is clear now your other suitors who will start a bidding war are more theory than well researched market assessment.
Nope, not anymoreCurrently Merrett plans to meet both those clubs. Dogs are no guarantee to get butters and who’s to say they can’t try and get both.
But I’m just responding to hawks fans who are saying Merrett has lost his value because of his fractured relationship with Essendon. My point is that doesn’t help hawthorn because if hawthorn don’t satisfy Essendon and it’s actually that fractured Merrett would go anywhere to get out of Essendon.
But like I’ve said I believe merretts manager wouldn’t have gone this far down the road with the hawks unless the bones of this trade has been agreed upon. Which I also think could be a win/win for both clubs.
