Generally speaking, I agree. Nothing against AFL members themselves, but it's a bit of an AFL-centric rort IMO.
It was VFL (now called AFL) memberships from back last century that mainly paid for the VFL Park investment at Waverley. The AFL converted that into a substantial profit when they disposed of the venue for developers to build housing where the car parks had been. Some of that profit funded a substantial proportion of the Southern stand as redeveloped in the early 90's. As a result AFL has a level of title there.

The AFL have been trying for years to water down membership benefits but what with the joining fee and all they have been unable to legally do so.

Note that today, Sunday, ONLY Geelong and Lions Gold AFL members are able to pay the booking fee to secure seats from an allocation of IIRC ~60% of the total. (The GF ticket price has been deemed part of the annual membership).

As an AFL member, I am also recognised as a club member.
Yes you are but you get special advantage over normal club members as the odds are far higher in your favour. Its also unbalances the crowd in favour of melbourne teams who supporters more likely are afl members. In any case my main issue isnt with afl memberships as you are club supporters after all. The main issue is with the mcc members getting so many tickets. 17 thousand tickets for club members is just not enough. It should be double that

I booked this trip to Melbourne months ago,is there a good place to go and watch the GF if I can't get a ticket ? I know little about Melbourne.

Fed square is good. Mates and i watched it there when we missed tickets in 09. They have the game on big screen, Y & J pub and bars all really close by, train station across the road.they usually present the players at fed square later on too if you hang around.

So not a 50 year memebership then

What are you complaining about again? The club has options for P1 add on and a 1859 membership with a guaranteed ticket

Surely as a “50 years memeber” you would be aware of these options

Or are you just incredibly densed?
Why are you so antagonistic?

Look, I think more than anything else, Jumping Jack is just being a bit philosophical about it. He's allowed to be disappointed, let him be disappointed.

Most people don't have the money to be able to drop an extra $220 per year, at the start of the year, for a 1/9 chance to make the GF, only to then have to save up for the ticket, on top of the regular membership cost. I do, but I recognise that I am lucky on that front. I haven't always been in that financial position.

$220 isn't the same for everyone.

On another note: **** those people on Geelong Facebook groups complaining that they are GF Guarantee/Social Club/Whatever, and they "only" got a Level 4 seat.

Boo hoo, you have to sit in the back seat of the Rolls. There are tens of thousands who'd kill for that ticket.

Bet I know exactly who you're talking about...

I agree with that but because of the afls contract with the MCC I doubt its changing.

Sure, but when that happened, only one member of the team was actually alive. It's a long time ago now.

That’s not my point , the bloke claimed he had a 50 year membership and never been successful in any ballots

Then clarified he didn’t have a 50 year membership as he rounded it when being called out on it

And then will Probbly be obtused about his membership options if he really wanted more success in the ballot

Probbly never been a memeber or been in a ballot ever if we are being honest

Were the players at Fed Square after 22'? I completely forgot about that but had seen them there in previous years.

Good. They need to get rid of afl members. More tickets for club members
The gripe shouldn’t be towards afl members.
It should be corporates, consider us afl members the same as normal members.
To be fair I also think I should have more of a priority come the grand final but we actually lose seats.
They also changed the system this year for the first time that certain levels could only be purchased by gold and certain areas for silver/bronze
Then the on sale to non supporting clubs

09 they were and it was great. We hung around to see them and it was well worth it. 2022 we had to watch at home as we couldn't get tickets but I assume they were.

He didn't say that at all. He said, quote, Over 50 years of club membership and no luck in the ballot.

I have some sympathy for the devil here. The need for the membership to be held on a continuous basis is, especially over 50 years, unrealistic.

All it takes is to lapse your membership for a single year because you lose your job, you move overseas, you have a baby, you have to work Saturdays for a year, whatever. Frankly, the club should do it on cumulative years anyway, as it's still the same amount of money going into the club.

I'd probably be up to 21 consecutive years now (see join date) if it weren't for the years when I had to work Friday night and Sunday day to support myself as a student.

That’s not the point of the discussion and you know it

Great post.

I disagree completely. I don't think he was pretending to be something he wasn't, I don't think he was being disingenuous. I think he was just complaining that his 50 years of membership doesn't get recognised, while being disappointed that he missed out. And that's completely fair enough IMO.

Look, I am probably not the first person to come to Jumping Jack 's defence. We have had plenty of Robust Discussions on the Geelong board and strong disagreements. However, in this case, I think he is rightly entitled to be a bit upset and I don't think he is misrepresenting himself.

No more of an advantage compared to premiership members or the other membership options through the club. I just happened to invest in early enough to reap the benefits now.

FWIW, I also got a ticket through the ballot which I won’t need so probably going to flog it off here when I confirm its location

I'm not going to tell you what her, ummm, I mean, their, name is.

I just love the idea that the $220 we pay for the premiership membership is too much for them to then sit on level 4, so they'll drop that and instead buy a corporate package next time

They clearly have no idea how the sales of corporate tickets & packages work, how expressive they are and how quickly the ones more often available to the public sell out - hope they don't mind forking out a likely $4000+, potentially a few months out to get those desired level 1 or level 2 seats

I don’t think he has a leg to stand on ..there’s plenty of options for add ons and a membership package for a guaranteed ticket

Sure it’s costly but that’s the chance you take , with “over 50 years of memebership “ he would be aware of this and chose not to pick any of these options at all in the last 20 years

I don’t see how you can complain it tbh
