It was VFL (now called AFL) memberships from back last century that mainly paid for the VFL Park investment at Waverley. The AFL converted that into a substantial profit when they disposed of the venue for developers to build housing where the car parks had been. Some of that profit funded a substantial proportion of the Southern stand as redeveloped in the early 90's. As a result AFL has a level of title there.Generally speaking, I agree. Nothing against AFL members themselves, but it's a bit of an AFL-centric rort IMO.
The AFL have been trying for years to water down membership benefits but what with the joining fee and all they have been unable to legally do so.
Note that today, Sunday, ONLY Geelong and Lions Gold AFL members are able to pay the booking fee to secure seats from an allocation of IIRC ~60% of the total. (The GF ticket price has been deemed part of the annual membership).
