QFA Div 2 North

The North/South split has always perplexed me. I played for Redcliffe and over the years we played in different divisions playing Surfers, Carrara, Coomera, Beenleigh, Logan, Robina, Caloundra, Gympie. As with most clubs, we travelled well, 2 teams.
My question is "are we pandering to clubs for travel over competitiveness?" Or is it a League push?
QAFL - Best 10 or 12 teams
QFA Div 1 - next 10 best teams
QFA Div 2 - next 10 best teams
And so on
Edit: this includes MB, Hinterland, Yeronga , Coorparoo, Wynnum, Toowoomba, Calamvale, Park Ridge, Yeronga, UQ, RAAF, Ipswich, Pine Rivers, Kedron, Alex Hills etc...
And Moorooka, North Shore

In terms of travel. It almost seems as the higher level, the expectation is you’re willing to travel more? Not sure why that’s become the premise but seems to be since covid.

Only about 2 or so years ago did you have Ipswich Eagles and Redlands driving down to play Coolangatta on a Friday night and vice versa. 2019 you had Noosa driving down to play Burleigh in Div 1 .

You had multiple U15 and U17s GFs at Everleigh (Greenbank Giants) that included Maroochydore, Burleigh and Grange. 17s is on a Sunday. From 9am to 3pm game times throughout the season. If you expect parents on any end of the coast or in Brisbane to drive anywhere and everywhere on a Sunday then surely you can implement the same level of expectations of travel beyond just QAFL.

I’m not saying you should be expected to drive from Gympie to Burleigh every few weeks. But perhaps AFLQ has leaned more towards pandering travel over competitiveness. I’m sure Zillmere and Beenleigh would have loved to play each other this year.

The Friday night comp has benefited greatly from a more localised comp.
Which is fair enough as getting to games by 6.30 up the coast was challenging.
It's definitely has worked and will see growth in that space.
As for Saturday footy clubs should have no problem doing a few road trips a year.
If you don't get a decent amount of teams in div 1 and they change it that's just the way it has to be.
But surely there are three clubs across two comps that can make the jump.
Never understood the mentality of not trying to take your club to the next level.
It's not bloody easy and you know going in that some weeks are gold and some are what the **** just happened.
But that's all part of footy.
Over time it becomes more successful.
I'm not convinced aflq forcing clubs is the right way to go.

Maybe not forcing clubs but there has to be a criteria for each comp.

Localised Friday comps are fine, but Saturday Comps should purely be about standard not location.
As mentioned earlier, Youth comps end up all over the place. U17 girls Div 2 a couple of years ago, 2pm Sunday at Noosa, 2 weeks later 10am at Tweed Heads. All players travelled without compl

And is the standard of juniors any better than it was previously under regional ops? Nope
A bit difficult to quantify.
In the boys space I would argue the 04, 05, 06 birth years has produced some great footballers across Queensland so maybe what was happening from 2014 to 2020 was working.
Since then we've had McDonalds Cup, Community & Conference, Covid, even age groups, even age .5 groups, odd age .5 groups etc

It almost already seems locked in that mt Gravatt will be QAFL again next year which just seems unfathomable to me considering that situation there. You’d think that Maroochydore and Noosa have to be in the same comp just cause of the rivalry and revenue the two make when they play each other.
Yes and no re Noosa / Maroochy FB - they're not attached at the hip and I'm sure there have been some great rivalries in Qld football across the decades that no longer exist due to various reasons. Yep both clubs do very well out of the 2 games played each year but if they are relying on revenue from 1 home game each season then they would be struggling.

Talk about a transformation in such a small span of time. 2023 fell into Friday night footy winless. 2024 make the GF and this year go undefeated and win it. What an amazing feat. Let’s hope they can bring some of that success back in Saturday’s and hopefully stay there. Saturday’s is a whole different ball game.

Ipswich on the other hand. I think their biggest issue other than themselves is all the other Ipswich teams in the same comp. Gonna take many years to get back into Saturday footy. Considering they merged with their ‘love to hate’ neighbours the Cats to both have a team this year. The way things are going. Might be Springfield making the move to Saturday’s in the near future.

Also, does that mean Div 2 north is now going to be 12 teams? Unless Redcliffe go up and Gympie go fridays. That’s a huge comp.

Wouldn't even say the Roosters fell into Friday night footy, as their team that year was mostly Yeronga Friday night players/ even u17's filling in, they rarely had a team.

It's a remarkable turnaround, so good for the club and keen to get back down to the Pen on a Saturday!

So Redcliffe have signed two former QAFL players. Plus their BnF as well as Nick Jackson (who is a gun). Plus whoever else they sign. Not sure who is going to compete with them in division 2? Is Redcliffe doing a Noosa/Maroochy and getting one more silverware before going up?

Div 2 has been for a long time the top 1-2 and a bit further behind 3-4. Then day light. Pine Rivers finished 6th and were 7 games behind Redcliffe.

I know we go over this a thousand different ways but I’d love a Div 1,2,3 Saturdays. Seeing Redcliffe and Alex Hills battle against the Burleighs and Coolangatta. Suddenly your Beenleigh's and Zillmere’s get regular competitive games in Div 3.

Just my opinion. I’d rather travel down or up to the coast knowing I can win or have a close game every few weeks. Then drive 25-35 mins every week and get smashed. Leave localised comps to Fridays.

Unfortunately can’t see any changes happening anytime soon.

Redcliffe would need to make sure they’re setup right before making the jump. It’s not just a case of “let’s goto div1”

Moreton bay dominated and won 3 premierships before they made the jump.

I agree
The head guy from south bris said the same about the coast
But Gc to sunny that might be a problem

History shows doesn't matter how successful you are in div 2 you will be a small fish in a big pond in div 1 in the first couple of seasons.
So the decision to move up isn't based on how many flags you have.
If the players are onboard then you can start looking at other reasons to move.
If they are not it's the end of the discussion.

Would make more sense having div1,2,3 then hey!

Absolutely Correct. One good year doesn’t automatically mean you’re off to Div 1. Mbay dominated for years before going up and still weren’t ready.
If clubs focused on themselves and didn’t worry what everyone else was doing they might give themselves a better shot.

So what’s the difference between PAC Pines and Moorooka going up not just divisions but from Fridays to Saturdays? Other than AFLQ forcing them up?

What’s the definition of success then? Redcliffe multiple prelims prior to this season? Alex Hills multiple GFs?

By everyone’s logic here, Moorooka is no where ready for going up a division since they’ve only been good for 2 years, back to back GFs and an undefeated season. They better stay Fridays and win just one more to ensure they really are ready.

Or have we just decided that Div 1 is just too hard?

You need to send 2 teams or more up to Div 1. Not just the one club.
