2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Geelong won't pay what we want them to pay. They only coughed up pick 17 for Cokehead McGee and made that an absolute pain in the ass for the Dogs.
Smith was OOC, coming off a knee and a history of mental health problems.

Marshall is contracted and a good citizen.

Geelong are desperate. Yesterday exposed a massive hole in their list.

They can do whatever they please. I’m keen to keep Marshall. But Saints are no longer a pushover and Geelong have an urgent need.

Cats may just find that they will be bent over if a deal is to be done. SOS, Lyon and Gubby are hard edged bastards and will be difficult to deal with.

Pride and self entitlement will not get a deal done for Geelong this time.

Read today in some footy analysis, Commenti was a question mark to be traded to Carlton ?
Surely not ,but if Marshall stays and Howard plays Full Back ,where does he play?
A young aggressive key playing fwd or back, who I think has been serviceable for his age and experience ,surely won’t be traded, but haven’t seen him appear in anyone’s best 22?

I’m too traumatized as a Saints fan to not have every base covered. Imagine prelim final night coming up against Darcy or Thilthorpe and they’re just lobbing it up Mason Cox style because we don’t have anyone that can reach that high. And you just know it will happen because St Kilda.
100% agree with this. Howard is cooked and we need someone to play on the Sam Darcy's and other giants of the competition. SDK is 204 cm. As much as I love Ro he is about to turn 30. If 24-year-old SDK was on the table as part of a deal I would strongly consider it. If we are serious about taking the next step then Camineti is not your #1 tall defender. For mine he is borderline best 23 - a handy swingman who can play as your 3rd tall defender/forward.

Do you now speak for club?

Its just a discussion of what ifs, so don't get yourself in a tizz.

On current form I agree Wilkie is a much better player, but if it's true perhaps the club are prepared to give Wilke's his big pay day and come away with a future full back.

Basically it's short term vs long term and list balance.
No I speak for myself and I will post what I want. Don't like it, too bad.

Smith is also a lot younger than Marshall, I can't imagine the Cats being willing to pay big for a 30 year old ruck. A 23 year old Bailey Smith, a former top 10 pick who had shown a fair bit could only get pick 17 after a lot of back and forth. Injuries and off field yes, but he wasn't exactly doing Ben Cousins levels of shenanigans.

Surely the price we would ask would see them knocking on doors elsewhere? I'd be asking for pick #17 and a sweetener.

Pick 17 which will become 22-24 in a weak and compromised draft?

Yuck.

No thanks.

If that’s the rubbish Geelong dish up then hold Marshall.

Play him with TDK, remove the crash and bash trauma on his body, and watch him as a mobile utility who can push forward or provide another ruck option.

Unless we are getting an SDK or a decent young player from them, I'd rather keep Marshall.

Maybe we don't even up end taking that pick to the draft even if we do get it for Marshall.

Given our current list build position and possible flag trajectory I have come around to the club making the most out of our aging stars!

We are in the perfect position if Marshall does request a trade, we are not forcing him out the door and can bend Geelong over at the trade table. Marshall is no doubt an A grade player but as a tap ruckman he is one of the weakest of all the No 1 ruckman in the comp. That is the exact reason we spent so much and brought in TDK.

If I was Geelong I would show some patience and back in their kids Toby Conway 206cm and Mitch Edwards 207cm to step up. Both had injury worries this year, but have the potential to be better tap ruckman than what Marshall will offer. At the very worse Blicavs has shown he is a difference maker when in there.

All the media are suggesting Geelong will go the impatient route and target Rowan, so its a win win for us. If he goes to Geelong we will be well compensated, if he stays we still have an A grade player.

Zero chance the grand final will be subscriber only so I’m not sure that argument makes any sense

Still rings true for FTA.

People are more likely to stay home if the game starts later. Means higher ratings, bigger advertising revenue etc

As for it not being a subscription service; It's only a matter of time before all FTA moves to streaming. You won't watch "Channel 7" you'll be a subscriber to the "7 Plus" app.

The base game might remain free of charge but they will absolutely put up paid options.

Wanna watch in 4k/8k? It's only $5.

Want picture in picture ads, rather than full screen? Only $3!!

You want a 'kid friendly' version that doesn't have gambling ads? $10 thanks. If you sign up now you get it for half price!!

We are already seeing it in US and Euro sports leagues. Only a matter of time over here, especially with players, coaches & managers all pushing for more money every time the rights come up.

If using the pick in a trade it would have to be for a very good player or part of a very good deal.

If using it as a future then it is a late first rounder and its value is diluted.

I understand there are potentially lots of moving parts, but Marshall is worth way more than pick 17 and scraps.

If we look after him he has got a lot of very good football ahead of him.

That was the itinerary that I'd looked at funny enough. I want to go to some of the more obscure Eastern European countries too. Romania looks interesting and Slovakia and Serbia looks worth a visit. People are saying Belgrade is like going to Berlin in the 90s.

I'm over going to Western Europe it's full of tourists which ruins the experience.
In three weeks it will be two years since we pulled out of the driveway of our house on the Sunshine Coast. We have loved the remote and isolated from our drive in Australia, to where we currently are in Turkey. If you want stunningly beautiful, with no tourists then go to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Wonderful people, great culture and incredible natural landscapes. After 4-6 weeks in Turkey, we will quickly slip around Southern Europe to Morocco, to escape the European winter and find the remote and isolated again. Can't recommend this lifestyle highly enough.

I don't care if Wilkie wants a pay day, I am speaking from the clubs pov.
Swapping SDK for Wilkie is insane. Full stop
Just guessing, if we do swap Marshall for SDK (big if, probably need a 2nd round pick too along with SDK, Wilkie may be traded to bring in midfield talents (could be Sanders + first round pick). Then on trade the first round pick for Flanders. So essentially it’s Marshall + Wilkie for SDK + Flanders + Sanders. Two 30 year olds for 3 early twenties young talent + 2nd rounder

Again, just guessing.

Wilkie could play for another 5 plus years. No from me.

We don't get better by trading out Wilkie or Ro

The point of bringing in JSOS and Aleer is to allow Wilkie to do more Wilkie things.

We don't need Marshall to be a star forward, we just need to him to be a bailout target from the backline and stop Max from being double-teamed every f50 entry. A different combination than Meek/Jackson, but I can see it working just as well.

as an aside, did anyone notice the resemblance of our game style to the way the GF was played, It felt very similar.

Doing the stans next August.

Perhaps Wilkie wants to leave for the pay day, so it would be reasonable in my view. I get the impression that the club think that Tauru will play the Wilkie role and although they love him, they are planning for the future and are prepared to make long term decisions.

SDK has a lot of footy ahead of him and we definitely need a 2m tall defender to play on the big forwards. Perhaps the club also think that paying a 24yo over a 29yo the extra dollars is a better investment?

I doubt we give Geelong Marshall and a first round pick, without getting a pick and SDK in return.

IF it does occur you would wonder what happens to Howard next year - perhaps he has interest from another club also?
They cannot have their eyes entirely on the future.
As it stands we have NAS for 2 years. We have to make hay now, and letting Wilkie go is not that decision.

Wilkie will go nowhere. Marshall I’m not quite dads definitive in, but I’d like to keep him unless we get an offer we can’t refuse.

I am off the opinion that they went hard early at TDK coz he was about to sign an extension with the blues, they turned his head and the restis history.
Didn’t do any harm that the Blues kept Voss and look like they are heading into nowhere-land for a good few years.

Yet we picked Raph clark who’s brother is not even that good of a player.. Just blindly trying to copy recruitment of Cyril Rioli and failing miserably.
X was a superstar ruined by injury and Raph was an absolute gun as a junior.

I know someone who coached against him when he played seniors in the NT and he was a ripper. He had some health problems with us but imo your way off the mark here.

They were both selected on talent, you can’t foresee injury and illness.

Cammanitti is only gonna get better.
Having him learn new skills in the back line, will help him as a forward. He competes, smashes packs and is a good mark...and now he can play both ends what's not love, a young Chris Grant, Matty Pavelich style player, Ross and Co. are on record as saying players need to be multi -dimensional, Cammanitti is a KP one.
