Recommitted Sam Butler [Re-Signed to 2027]

Would like us to extend our offer to at least 3 years. He has come along and is showing promising signs in recovering from his leg injury.

Played a great finals series too and showed plenty of class/composure with ball in hand/finishing.

Some saints supporter suggested pick 8, Cmac and Butler for Merret + F3.

Why the hell would Hawthorn give up 2 best 22 kids (both have roughly 10 years left) + a top 10 pick for Merrett? He's good but we're not burning our list for him.

That deal is shithouse for both clubs.

and he is certainly NOT a key piece in any premiership chase.
put Day, Dear, Mackenzie and Maginness into that side in 2026, and media "experts" will soon forget this "weak" midfield the Hawks have. Don't worry about Day, on top of it now and he'll be 200% fit come opening round.

IMO Petracca more likely to be at the Hawks in 2026 than Merrett.

Put those players in and the hawks midfield is still weak compared to the top teams.

You can’t seriously think it’s at all comparable to Brisbane, Freo, Gold Coast midfield.

I love how people think that 21/22 year Olds have no improvement in them.
Mackenzie, Ward and Butler are not bona fide A graders but another pre season with Newcombe Nash and Day, you would expect some real green shoots up in their development. Hawks just made a prelim so the midfield mustn't be as bad some make it out to be , I felt all season that Worpel just couldn't get going , he was the biggest disappointment for mine. Obviously one more A grader would push us into top four contention again but, as much as that's important, I feel the improvement of above listed players are as well .

I don’t think anyone’s disregarding that when they say the hawks midfield is weak though.

Take the three teams I mentioned as being clearly above the Hawks, they have improvement coming from Ashcroft X2, Annable, Fletcher, Marshall for Brisbane, M.Reid, Johnson, Erasmus, L.Jackson (as a mid) for Freo, Humphrey, Rogers, Lombard, Uwland for Gold Coast.

If anything there’s more improvement in those three teams than the Hawks.

No. Dont profess that you've seen the best of Hawthorns midfield. Just don't.

Where did I say that?

I said all teams have improvement to come from their younger players, including Hawthorn.

From my perspective it can be easily argued that GC and Bris in particular have more improvement to come from that group.

I cant believe the claim that we have a 2 year deal with him which is what he had when he was still at Box Hill.
Surely the offer went up after his strong finish to the season.
But there is no news about this being the case.

I doubt you want to get into a bidding war for this guy. You probably just have a offer he either accepts or moves on from

So far I’ve read that Merrett is worth less than pick 8 and 2 young, but average half forwards.. then to follow that up Worpel is worth a first rounder.

That’d put them at about the same value, which is an absolutely ridiculous stance to take.
Don't come on these boards after having some shit fight with a supporter that doesn't represent 99.5% of the supporter base and make up ****ing shit for likes. U don't like it, take it up with THAT poster. Don't try to play the hero.

No response to Brisbane/GC having more improvement in their future midfields than the Hawks?

I’ve read and heard similar from more than that post. Hawks supporters think that pick 8 and a collection of your VFL players gets a deal done for Merrett

Like thinking Oscar Allen is worth pick 2. Sometimes the AFL takes a massive integrity hit for the sake of pretending no priority picks were given.

I wouldnt want to let Butler go for less than a 1st round pick. I hope he stays rather than wastes his potential for more money.

Pick 8 is very different to an end of round 1 pick, and in any case, that would be FA compensation, not a trade. The bombers say the 2 young average half-forwards are worth nothing, so I'm not sure they are about the same value.

Supporters always overvalue their own and devalue others.

Coasters and Shoey are the most emotional and illogical delusional other club posters here. Still stinging from the TB trade, I think

If he wants more opportunity and a club can give him more time in the middle I'm happy to see him go. I don't think there is a full time midfield slot for him even if we have Worpel leave and don't land Merrett.

I think we should absolutely keep onto him. He's ultra talented. Maybe he doesn't see himself as establishing what he could be at hawthorn with the amount of young guys currently in our 22.

I probably rate him a little higher then most.

However anywhere but the eagles. I think the eagles would point out how they gifted us the Carlton pick and we might have to send them a second with Butler for a third to square that up

In with you, I rate him highly too.

HHF that can pinch hit in the middle and loves to tackle. Just look at the effect those types of players had on the weekend.

Give him an extra year (3) and keep him home.
