Will jump head first into oncoming traffic if we go for Starcevich.

Concussion issues aside he is the wrong age bracket in a position we already have a glut of mature players for.

He also relies HEAVILY on his athleticism to defend and play the game, think the cliff will come sooner than most think for him.

My point that you keep missing is that we could have got Baker and gross without using pick 3 and had a much higher rated draftee .

I don't really rate allan and if he wasn't from WA neither would hardly anyone else

Maybe........again.

That just an opinion and reality was it didn't work out that way.

The " we could have done better argument" isn't much of an argument.

Wasn't Murphy Reid seen as a massive flight risk last year? You think he'd want to stay in WA if he was playing in a one win team?
We have three years from this draft class to the end of their contract. If we are shit then, whatever, let them leave and burn the club.

The reality is that we should be on the up and a place people want to stay with success coming.

I understand that he'd be contracted for 3 years. I'm also very much hoping we'll be on the up by then too. But picking him we would've been starting from behind the eight ball in that regard.

Absolutely delusional and dare I say it, copium to think Brisbane were happy to play with a man down and sit a healthy player on the bench because they were 30 points up in a GF.

Of course he was concussed.
Well i guess you will give us the medical report that states he had a concussion. He may well have but as yet there has been no clarification. Apparently the contract we have offered is only 4 years as well but half the board is melting about a six year contract. best to wait till the facts are in before taking the high ground.

Cal Twomey thinks we will get 4 extra rookie spots & a end of first round pick and also if we get Starcevich it won't interfere with the Oscar Allen compensation. Pretty happy with that. That'll give us 1,2,16,19,20,33. Not including the Chesser and Ryan picks if they are for this year.

I'm happy with that!

If we trade out pick 1 or 2 or both we are really f****** stupid.
(Saying what you said)

Should be able to get another top 10 pick easy enough.

With the assistance package somewhat announced, planning is something that can occur now. Below is adding in our pick 2 and Carltons pick 9 to draft order. Id go with

WCE/Carlton - Chesser + pick 17 for Pick 11
WCE/Gold Coast - 11, 22, 23 and 33 (2926) for Gold Coast pick 7. 15 and future 3rd (2517)
WCE/St Kilda - Liam Ryan for ST Kilda F2nd
WCE/Brisbane - St Kilda F2nd for Starcevich

Then
2 NGA Spots - Koby Evans and Tylah Williams
2 DFA rookie spots - Tom Berry (yuck) and Jacob Blight (think Tylar Young says no to us)

Draft - Pick 1,2,7,15 and Charlie Banfield
Picks - Willem Duursma (1), Dyson Sharp (2), Sam Cumming (7), Jacob Farrow (15), Charlie Banfield (61)

Boom

Don't think Starc is essential, but delinking Starc from impacting on Allen compo would mean it's a free hit with just $'s going out. Obviously massive concussion issues but should be able to write the contract to reflect that.

1,2,16,19,20,33.

16 and 20 equals pick 6 in points. Means that Port pick is very available if they don't use on a Curnow type trade.

1, 2, 6, 19, 33. I'd be happy with that. Durrsma, Sharp, Cumming/Schubert, Fred R, Curtin and then Banfield match later.

Sign me up.

I read the forced retirement due to concussion protocols .it says payments are outside the salary cap . It mentions beware beyond 4 year contracts .
So does this mean Starcevich is not a risk because if he medically retires from a future hit his payout is outside cap . What does it mean in laymans terms . I dont know

AFL clubs will be given salary cap (Total Player Payments, TPP) relief when a player is forced to retire early (medically) due to concussion, subject to approval by an AFL concussion panel.

The relief is capped over a 3-year period following retirement:
  • Year 1: up to 90% of the contracted payments may be considered for relief
  • Year 2: up to 75%
  • Year 3: up to 50%

The scheme is intended to apply only when retirement is subject to recommendation by the AFL concussion panel, not for any retirement or injury.

Example: Justin Clarke, who retired at 22 due to concussion, reportedly received a payout of A$700,000.

Its a bit confusing but we cant have pick 2 and 6. Pick 2 turns pick 6 into pick 7

Looks like it's three years of cap relief for concussion retirements. So would make sense on four year contract we are offering. Retirement happens after first year, then the following three years have varying cap relief.

So for Starc
2026 - cops a knock that sees him referred to the panel and ultimately takes the step/forced to retire at end of season
2027 - 90% cap relief
2028 - 75% cap relief
2029 - 50% cap relief

Based on the above., you'd want a four year contract (could have additional years subject to games qualifier, so wouldn't trigger if retired), then want to front load the contract as much as feasibly possible so that you're getting as much cap relief as possible given the staggered percentages.

I think a saving grace of our trade down from 3 is that nobody taken between pick 3 & Allan has set the world on fire. As it stands, it appears that the talent was sufficiently even that we didn't miss much.

Trading the rights to Duursma because we’re scared he’ll leave is just coward behaviour.
Why ? If there is a genuine concern that duursma will leave what is the point of putting 3 years into him ?

If we have essendon and carlton (via GC/curnow trade) both gunning for pick 1 we could come out very well on a player who we might not want to draft

Slight clarification to this

Twomey said we would trade for Starcevich so we could keep the Allen FA compo without it being diluted

And the bit nobody will want to hear is that whilst he doesn’t think the end of R1 priority pick will have to be traded he did suggest it would be about the right value to trade for Starcevich - because in his mind that would be what Brisbane would receive via FA for him. Which is complete bollocks as they wouldn’t be getting anything since Allen and Draper are both coming in as Free Agents

We don’t get Starcevich for free but nor should we be handing over an end of R1 pick for him either. The Hawthorn R2 pick is what we should be offering

If Sharp is projected to be passed by Richmond and Essendon we can also try to go 2 and 15 for another 2 top 10 picks.

Either gets us Robey or someone else that falls out of the top 5 if he keeps rising. In fact, should probably be trying to use him to sell pick 2.
