It just has all the hallmarks of being an ugly ending rather than a fairytale one. The consistency of Tex's performances aren't going to get any better and he certainly was found wanting in the finals. It's not going to get any better from here.
If he was to have decent breaks of 3-4 games at least twice during the season maybe his finals efforts would be better.

We don't get angry anymore. This is just standard Victorian media coverage for anything relating Adelaide Crows.

If I was skeptical and im not, but lets just say hypothetically I am all down the conspiracy rabbit hole like SP, what if this rumour, being trade radio was designed to get the Melbourne fans in a tiz by getting their hopes up only for when the real negotiations to start, Melbourne fans go nuts upon realising they are getting a first and some lower order pick swaps. They then heap pressure on the club to pull out.

I guess the initial premise you put forward was the sides would never suddenly run further in finals.

Anyway, I'm willing to let this one go.

I'm never going to convince you and likewise my mind will not change on Keays in finals.

I would not have him in the side but you would.

That's fine.
This study was 8 players btw.

A far larger study with all players in the league as more data was available showed the opposite effect (reductions in distance covered, high speed running and player load).

There were small reductions in TD (−2%), HSR (−10%), and PL (−3%) during the Finals Series compared to the Premiership Season.

The Victorian media is setup to ensure Victorian teams win out on player movement. I fully believe it was part of the 2007 investigation into Victorian teams not winning flags for 7 years - and findings never released.

There are many problems with this. A good forward needs to be able to take their opportunities when they arise. Walker showed signs of slowing down in the second half of the season and he was unable to take his opportunities.

Problem with big bodied forwards is they slow up. Walker might have a high footy IQ but he is going to be a dream match up for opposition coaches who can just put a tall running defender on him and just spend the day running off him.

So would our first rounder (14) and Butt's to Melbourne for Petracca be overs?

I think the club would be willing to pay that but it wouldnt surprise me if they wanted a 3rd back or something. At the end of the day, Petracca takes up a fair chunk of change in their cap, he wants out, Melbourne want him out so if they want it off their books they have to concede that as good of petracca is, he is a liability to them, especially to a side looking to conduct a mini rebuild and play youth.

Let’s just hope we don’t have a Wayne Carey/Bryce Gibbs bust. Neither of these high profile trades set the world on fire.

I'm a Petracca fan so I'm a bit biased, but those two had significant baggage. Don't think it is the same kind of risk.

Gibbs heart was never in the move and Neither was Careys however Carey played some great games for us. The whole move for Gibbs was about us doing Gibbs a favour.

Carey was out of the game for over a year. His body was shot to pieces and he was a shadow of his former self. Gibbs was top end player in a very poor team. We got an above average season from him and then "other" factors saw him quickly fall off thr cliff.

Trac is clearly Melbourne's 2nd best player. Has single-handedly torn apart games this year, and is 29 which is well in the prime for this generation of footballer.

Trades that should be used as reference in negotiations

Bowes and Pick 7 for 3rd rd Draft Pick

Or from an NFL perspective

Osweiller, 6th rd pick and a future 2nd rd pick for a 4th rd pick

If we're to take on Petracca's contract.

Petracca and a 1st for a 3rd rd pick.

edit: I don't believe it's fair one bit. But I'd certainly be using them as examples to only be giving up 1st.

Terrible comparison. Brock Osweiller was shit. Was always shit.

Trac has been a superstar and is still a very very good player.

Carey busted his knee on the goal post didnt he?

Ah, we do have a history of booing! I was at Footy park that night and was quietly amused at the crowd booing the goal post!

The old square goal posts at Footy Park. I remember there was an ad on 5AA around that time for some local steel company and they used to promote how they even made the Footy Park goal posts.

Didn't hear that ad after the Carey incident. I was sitting down that end that day.

Yeah, then cooked his neck. was averaging 2.5 goals a game even in his limited state.

Even a 50% Carey in 2005 instead of Sarge... Though Carey said he was going to retire in 2004 anyway.
Mark Stevens was the one that hurt us in 2005.

Poor bloke only played 13 games after his 27th birthday.

Cursed. You need your top players for the top games.

Roo killed us in 2005. Otherwise we have Sydney at home in the prelim.

2006 - losing Ben Hart was massive. Then we lost our two best goal scorers in Roo/Hentschel and having a half fit Welsh/Burton as next best killed us.

Unfortunately - 2025 will go down as the year Rankine cost us.

But Petracca also had a serious injury 18 months ago and hasn’t been the same since

When you take into consideration he'd be replacing Berry in the midfield, it's a bit of a no brainer. I'd be surprised if we got him but if we did, it would be a huge get for the psyche of the club relative to the negative comments about Adelaide as a place to live. Maybe Gather Round has helped change that perception to some extent.

When you can sign one player of that ilk, more will follow.

I've fast forwarded to this, the current last page.

Petracca - has the 'It's happening' gif been posted yet? Particularly now he's met with the club and has had (or is going to have) a medical.

😮 I said he's not coming to the AFC. This could be the first time in my life I've ever been wrong, and I'd be happy about that, but there is some kind of foreboding overshadowing my possible glee.

Whether it's his physical or mental condition after that car crash type horrendous injury which IMO will effect his playing longevity, or the salary cost, or the trade cost, or the Bryce Gibbs factor (though Bryce was never this good), I'm a bit uneasy about all this.

It would be an instant boost, surely, but long term could it all turn sour?

We’ve seen it with Brisbane. From go-home 5 to now attracting genuine talent with Victorian background.

The club has done a good job lately with SA ties (Dawson, Rankine) and even B grade non-SA ties (Peatling, Cumming). They’ve also don’t a decent job of keeping non SA young talent which we’ve struggled in the past with (Rachele, Curtain etc).

Getting a genuine Elite non SA player would be a huge step forward to announce as a genuine destination club (unlike Port off cuts destination status).

If we get 2-3 years of peak Petracca it’s worth it. Maybe he players until he’s 35 ala Dangerfield.

Worth the risk.

The best clubs rebuild through Academy (which we don’t have and maybe door is getting shut) or through player movement. Look at North or even Carlton that have historically received lots of low draft picks. Compare to the Geelongs who don’t value the draft and always bringing in players.
