2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

They would have to give up this years 1st, next years first and a player I reckon. Possibly Stengle?

Something tells me Blues are sick or Curnow. Doesn't sound invested. No spring chicken anymore.
With that knee he’s always a massive risk, he’s actually had a great career considering how hard it is to overcome.

I think that’s part of the problem in moving him. Carlton rate him a superstar, which he is when fit and in form. Other clubs see a player they’d love on their terms which don’t come close to Carlton’s.

Everyone looks at Jaeger O’Meara who was a rolls Royce before injury and sees Curnow, would he even pass a medical ?.

5 new faces is nothing. The team changes like that every game.
All are professionals that have been in an AFL system for years. They are experienced and I am not giving them an out in 2026.
24 and 25 we were asked to be patient
This is now fully Lyon's team. Start getting results, including finals.
Respect your opinion.

I wouldn't say mine is giving them an 'out'.

Which teams come out of the 2025 finals and which go in to the 2026 finals by your prediction?

I don't think missing the finals next year is the end of the world but it would be disappointing.

There is a decent portion of the best 22 still having played under 50 games.

I'm surprised they didn't match.
I can't quite remember the details, but essentially they mishandled Draper (which is very funny).

They accidentally let him slip outside the top 5 paid players at the Bombers, which turned him into an unrestricted free agent - rather than a restricted one.

It was effectively a clerical error. Something they didn't mean to do.

Just popped over to the Essendon board to see the reaction to the band 2 compo for Draper.
Kind of sad really. They are so beaten down over there they can hardly muster the energy to get fired up over it.
Ok that’s enough of that.

There’s no feeling sorry for the opposition in general and certainly not Essendon. Stitched us up several times, hid the Carlisle pictures from us and vouched for what a great guy Lovett was.

I remember them slandering our club and players and after the baby bombers got beaten at Moorabbin. That drama derailed a very, very good side.

I hate them along with the rest.

There’s no crying in baseball and no feeling sorry for the opposition in the afl.

Essendon have plenty of picks, I’m more than happy to take a couple for someone we don’t want.

TDK, Silvagni, Flanders, Ryan, Aleer. Two as freebies and only 1 really costing us significant draft capital (apparently).

This is quite turning into quite a sensual off season.
There was someone on SEN today (maybe yesterday, maybe it was during the podcast) who said that recruiters think this is the worst draft of all time. Pick 7, maybe eventually pick 10 or 11 - being used on a player like Flanders is a no brainer to me.

It's not a gamble. We've seen what he's capable of, we know he hasn't peaked yet. We know he's at the very least a capable player who will fit in a best 22.

You can't say that for an untested 18 year old, regardless of where they're picked.

Might be different if we had pick 1 or 2, but I'm comfortable using pick 7 on Flanders. Even if we don't get any picks back.

Feels like an obvious win.

I was watching Rick Stein’s secret France, as I read your post a picture of massive purple aubergine’s in a market popped up on the screen.

You guys need to get out in the sun more, there is nothing sensual about football. It’s blokes with heads like robbers dogs belting each other silly.

God weather hits 25 and we feel sorry for essendon and have sensual off seasons. One more and I’m calling Pete Hegseth, get back to core values I say.

Beating the enemy is as sensual as it gets

If we're smart (and I think we are these days) we would do the following (and I am using the start position of picks, I know they blow out):

Marshall trade first,

Marshall and our pick 47 for the Cats pick 18 and pick 38

Then the Suns,

Our pick 7 and the Cats pick 18 for Flanders and the Suns pick 14.............

We lose 7, 47 and Marshall and gain Flanders, 14 and 38

Yeh, seems clear we don’t give a shit about the draft this year.

If the True Believer scenario pans out then our first for Mini Pou (he’s worth a little flyer) Fincher for the academy points and in reality whatever happens with both of them doesn’t really matter cause our win is trade/FAs anyway.

I expect something back but you’re right, when you chase contracted players and offer big money you pay up.

When you don’t you’re the bulldogs who are just kidding themselves.
Can't remember where I heard it, but I've been reliably informed that the Bulldogs are not a serious football club.....

I haven't paid much attention to this draft in comparison to last years, but I feel kind of conflicted about the idea of pick 7 with nothing coming back. I watched a few highlights over the last week of different players and there's still guys playing big games, but then how do you measure it if the draft is overall considered weak this year. Is a 30 disposal 4 goal game running through the midfield worth less because the U18 competition is weaker this year? Could some of the stand out performances be like a guy going to the VFL and kicking 5 (eg. Jack "The GOAT Billings...), but then not converting once back at AFL level?

There's still gonna be a few stars like every year, most looked linked to Gold Coast and GWS though. I'm not convinced it's the absolute spud of a draft the media is making it out to be. Still a fair few I've watched highlights of I'd love to have on our list (Greeves, Robey, Sharp, Cumming, Pou). But it definitely doesn't look like last year where the top 30 was chocked full of talent.

That said, can't have your cake and eat it too, can't ask for the world for 29 year old RoMa under contract and then not expect to be asked for similar with 24 year old Sam Flanders...

If we can work something out where we keep a pick in the teens and somehow land one of those mids listed above as well as our main 5 trade targets, that's an amazing result.
