2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

With all of the incoming, two of Tauru, Hammer and Barrett have to go forward. I know we like flexibility. But with Marshall going, all of Aleer, Tauru, Wilkie, Hammer, SOS and Barrett cant all play back. Leaves only King up forward.

Unless Keeler or Dodson has the pre-season of a lifetime (which would also solve our second ruck issue), one of Tauru or Hammer has to play forward in the ones (alongside King), and one of Tauru / Barrett plays as a key forward in the seconds (alongside Keeler / Dodson).

Personally I like Hammer back and Tauru forward. But thats just me

*Just had a look at the Doggies board. They are discussing Wade Derkson vs Jacob Blight for KPD options. Even at our lowest, not sure we have been there. That clubs refusal to send Naughton back is gonna cost them another shot at a flag
I also like Hammer back , but Ross has said he sees him as a forward .

So would imagine he will be forward .

First part I completely disagree with. It’s a new age, allowing a player to explore options when contracted and supporting their ability to do so isn’t at all pushing them out.

Second part of don’t really disagree with but the bit your missing is that we can engage with multiple clubs for him. He may very well come back and say I’m happy with these 3 offers, you guys work it out. Again, we’re not gonna get “overs” for him, I’m not even suggesting we’re gonna get “value” for him but we can deal with more clubs and we can ultimately welcome him back if we can’t make that work.

That’s not the case with Roma, he wants Geelong and it could quite easily get nasty if it doesn’t happen.
Theoretically Steele could give us clubs to chosen between but that rarely, if ever happens. If he does leave, he will pick his destination. It's too big of a life decision for him to not make it himself.

Maybe but it’s an option right now, you seem to have made your mind up that we’ve told him to **** off and not the door hit him on the way out, if that’s the case then yeh, we can’t really do anything but take a future fourth for him.

I don’t think it sounds that way at all and it presents more options than Marshall. We could very well get a week into trade week and he’s had no offers that interest him or us and he stays and everyone forgets that he even had in exit interview.

Marshall has said get me to Geelong. We have no flexibility there and yes we can retain him but if we do and he’s playing twos mid year (which I think he would) then we look pretty dumb

i went out there a few times, geez they talk about collingwood fans being toothless, that mob has all kind of deformaties

most memorable was spuds last game, went out with my collingwood supporting mate,at 27 i felt i was a bit old to run out on the ground, but my 25yo collingwood mate ran out there to be part of it
Spuds game was the only time I went out there. How funny was it when he went on a run down the ground with a few bounces, had a shit at goal and tripped over and landed on his face?!

Lappin played well that day from memory.

Emotional game.

Does Windy at the dinner with Flanders and not Cal say anything in the discussion of next captain? Is it player voted?
I’d say it’s more a demographics thing.

Flanders is 24, likely got more in common with Windy.

If we are into anyone after flanders- surely it's either:
1. a small lockdown defender.

Webster and paton now gone, stock too slow.

We are paper thin/virtually non existent for blokes to play on the charlie camerons of the world in a cutthroat final.

Or

2. A marking forward (JUH?)
Especially if marshall goes- we are VERY light on for TALL fwd marking targets.

We got killed this year with not being able to take the occasional relieving contested pack mark fwd and/or on the wing. (Marshalls contested marking was terrible this year)

King back will certainly help- but even with him back, it is still a big area of weakness for us (in a cutthroat final).

Owens and sharman aren't tall enough to do it reliably- and caminiti and keeler are still a couple of years off being able to rip balls out of the sky.
Excellent points , a small lock down back is essential .

Love Stocker but he doesn’t have the pace or agility for the role.

Maybe Liam O’Connell could do the role.

Player agent Scott Lucas

Again, how is sitting someone down and encouraging them to look around not a form of pushing them out? We may have done it in a nice way that leaves the door open for him to stay but at it's core, you don't do that if the preferred option is Steele at the club next year. 'Pushing someone out' doesnt have to be a negative or nuclear thing. We have seemingly done it in a respectable way but that then means respecting Steele and facilitating a trade no matter the return if he does return with a new club in mind.

Compared to Marshall who we have apparently repeatedly told we will hold to his contract. We hold the power in negotiations because he is wanted and contracted. If we've told him we will facilitate a trade, that's different. But we are within our rights to hold him to his contract regardless.

Marshall, agreed.

But Steele, if we said he can explore other options, then it is our responsibility to let him go for whatever gets offered. We cant push back on what is received when we are the ones who started the trade.
If we have said to Steele, look mate it’s you or Macrae. We think a number of these kids are ready for spots and based off your 2025 you are probably next man out, you are our ex skipper. You can stay and fight for a spot that your not guaranteed or we are happy for you to look for moves

Then it makes little sense for us to take a 3rd or 4th rounder and wave him good bye.

It’s not like we have said, we need your money off the books. We are saying a respectful, you are going to have to win a spot to an ageing champ.

Again, just can’t see why we would send him packing for nothing in a shit draft.

Feels to me like Steele is gone and these recent statements are the club getting on the front foot, curating the news, and controlling the narrative of the potentially awkward departure of the contracted captain. Not expecting a whole lot for him but I'm guessing the powers that be have a larger plan at play.

As it stands right now Marshall has requested a trade to Geelong.

Steele hasn’t requested anything and is canvassing options.

We can hold both if we want, we can trade both if we want.

One has said he wants out, the other has been told (or likely suggested or agreed that he’ll see if he can find a better opportunity).

Your position seems to be that a mutual agreement to see what else is available is the same as being booted. I don’t agree at all and that’s a fundamental issue with our opposed positions.

Fwiw I think both will wind up being traded anyway so it’s all pretty moot.

The thing with Steele though, is that while he may not be guaranteed a spot going forward, he has the capacity to earn that spot.

With the weight of the captaincy off his shoulders, and with a decent preseason, no reason he can't be a best 23 mid going forward.

I also think he'd do well the role Jarryn Geary played in his later years: that is, defensive forward who sits on an opposing teams rebounding flanker

I'm telling you man. Timeline shift. Something mystical happened, and we are now in a parallel timeline where St Kilda is no longer cursed. Did anybody hire any Etsy Witches? Be honest you're among friends
The moment we remunerated our unpaid heroes from the late 70’s in my mind.

Feels like the footy gods might have had a change of heart.

Acknowledge and mend so we can all forgive. Such a powerful thing to do.

Do you think though, if they have approached Ro with years to run on his contract, make him want to go, but cannot get the deal done - that’s a bad look for them?
I don’t think clubs care about ‘looking bad’. Most clubs would prefer not to get a deal done than pay more than what they are comfortable with.
Geelong are a club that notoriously try to buy low

Is Hastie the forgotten man?
Doesn’t get mentioned much.
Where do we see his best position?
Looks like a player to me.

He was playing high half forward when I watched them to see him. Maybe stints on ball like he does now. Honestly didn’t think he looked that exciting from the few games I saw. I thought he was another Jack Carrol type of fringe player. Whoever spotted him was a legend
Round 10, 2024 - Hawthorn sits one spot below us on the ladder. We lose the following week and Hawthorn wins, leapfrogging us. End result, we get pick 4 in the mid season draft.

Hawthorn were odds on favourite to get Box Hill player Max Hall.

I know I was unreasonable in the aftermath of that last round win last year which meant we missed the elite draftees (that we'd been obsessing over for months) but the AFL is just one of those sports that gives massive sliding doors draft moments. That was definitely one of them.
