we do need one though, and Club obviously acknowledge too given went after Windy... Steele is at least on the mkt, who else is there that we can realistically target, that is both defensive and athletic.... dont say the B word as thats unfortunately not realistic...
I'd personally target a player that sits more toward our ideal demographic and has some potential upside. George Stevens and Ted Clohesy are both our of contract. James Tunstill at Brisbane will likely be delisted and could be an option as a train on player.

Or we could draft one.

Or just gett Brady involved
True.

Watching the saints play, I thought he was just another dime a dozen midfielder. Wasn’t overly quick, skills seem ok.

Then I heard us and a few others were after him big time, I thought he must be like Brett Kirk defensively. Seen he averaged 3 tackles a game. Am I missing something?

Jamson Dunstill ? Portly forward chap ? Not meeting skin-fold parameters ?

So as Brady said, more a hybrid type.

Swans list boss Chris Keane:

KEANE ON JAI SERONG
It’s great that he’s chosen our footy club as his preferred destination, and we’ll try and get something done there with Mark (McKenzie) and the Hawks over the coming days. We like his versatility. He showed that he can play as that probably hybrid back, and that’s probably what we see at the moment with him to play on the mediums and talls, but we’ve also seen him play on a wing for Box Hill throughout the year, and you’re right, he’s probably a victim of circumstance there at Hawthorn. He’s got a few probably in front of him, and hopefully, if we can get something done, we’re excited to see what he can achieve up in Sydney.

in a crap draft....
Richmond are literally shopping the very pick we traded them and have been surprised by how little interest there is in it.

Many things to bag North on over the past five years - this isn't one of them yet. It might be if Whitlock doesn't make it but thus far it's a wait and see.

That's the query. He's a name, and we get excited by that, but can he cover the ground adequately? That's as important as anything to us.

I spoke with Saints fan who told me that he has been struggling for the past 2 years. I think we all recall him at his peak.

I thought that we had maybe recruited Urquart to play that defensive role. Does anyone see him getting any games this year?

They all just talk utter drivel don't they

The more you look at this draft, the less agitated I am by the trading out of that first pick last year.

The real question is if Matt Whitlock was on the open market today, would Pick 3 in return for Whitlock and a second rounder be market value?

On face value its overs. But if the draft evens out that later pick might get you a a good player.

Also if we had 3, we know we would most likely just pick another midfielder, so I have sort of come to terms with it.

Over to Mr Whitlock to become that key position player we all hope he can be.
Well put. The point about this trade is that we don't need another 18 year old midfielder for our list. Which is what pick 3 would have been used on. We need key position players. So who in this year's draft would we have taken at 3 who would be better for us than Whitlock? And where are they likely to be drafted? We didn't need pick 3, we got the player we needed plus an extra early second rounder which can be used on another of the best Key Position players available in this draft.
On the proviso that Whitlock comes on as expected it was a very smart trade.

Steele is a team first defensive mid that averages 21 touches and 9 tackles a game.

Get him in and let Wardlaw, Sheezel, LDU hunt the footy.

Who in our team currently plays a team first role?

Watched the Saints a fair bit, didn't really notice any overly defensive areas of his game. He didn't seem any different to Will, in the clinches happy to tackle and harass but wasn't overly effective in transition.

Jack Steele to play a defensive mid makes a lot of sense for us.

Come R1 if nothing changes we still have nobody to play that role.

My view, then we don't play that role specifically. We should always be trying to improve our players and they should be challenged to improve their defensive or offensive output where needed but we should always develop our game plan to suit the playing group and we have a very capable midfield group, we should be structured to take advantage of that.

There's also a bit of FOMO from fans given we traded out pick 3. The fact that we actually used it to bring in a KPP is overlooked because we aren't getting a new player this year.

We'll find out in due course whether it was a good or foolish move.

It's all well and good to say we'll just sit tight and not do anything this off-season. But the reality is, there are super compromised drafts coming from 2027 (not to mention the prospect of also losing players to Tassie), and if we haven't sufficiently added to the team by then we'll just fall even further behind.

So hit the draft instead of bringing in fringe players that don't help us climb the ladder and take games away from young players.

Depends what's out there willing to come.
