2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

We need to stop thinking about it being flag or bust 27-29. This needs to be a 10-year sustainable plan. I'm only in favour of trading out firsts in a weak draft like this year (plus we will land another one for Marshall be it this or next year) or for a gun like Butters.

The only way to find the next Nas is via the draft and ideally early picks.

The thing I'm happiest about with our approach this year is that we are likely to land TDK, JSOS, Flanders, Aleer and Ryan for a single first rounder. If you include losing Marshall in that it's only a 10 pick downgrade at worst.
I think it's more like let's have a crack in 27 and see how far we can get before the Wilkies, Sinclairs of the team fall off, and more importantly, before we have to do the whole Nas contract production again. Keep in mind that Nas is the central piece of the strategy here and it's difficult to solidify the long-term plan until after 27 when we find out his future.

So with that in mind, I think there's three possible scenarios and they're waiting to see which one plays out:

1. We get lucky and win a flag by the end of 27 -- we can all move on to hobbies that actually make our lives better. Maybe learn a language.

2. We have a solid crack at finals and are evidently a contending team -- Nas more likely to re-sign and we go again. Leadership totally passed on to the Nas age group core, hit free agency to plug final gaps in team.

3. It blows up in our faces or we're decent but not great -- Nas more likely to leave and we do a mini reset. Still have our good core of Windy, Owens etc., but maybe more aggressive with trades. Hopefully enough talent still around to be playing finals.

I think whatever happens before 27, we might take a little step back in 28 to implement the next phase of strategy because either Nas is gone or our current senior core are finished up (or both). Then we have a sustained run from 29ish onwards with the strategy decided at the end of 27, depending on Nas.

Who will our back pocket be next year? Jimmy was fantastic and quick enough to play on the likes of papley, Charlie Cameron, etc. Hastie would be ideal, shows grit and pace but club don't seem to absolutely love him yet. Stocker is probably too slow to play on the quickest small forwards. Relying on Voss coming in is risky. Have thought tauru is an option, super quick. But would limit his ability to fly as he would have to stay down most times, and may be bad for his development.
It will be Stocker and Hastie.

Can guarantee by mid year that Hastie will be a lock for that small/medium defender role. Has all the attributes.

Carlton gonna be scary good next year with that pick up
We can smell what they’re cooking

I wouldn't forget about O'Connor. Looked solid as a rock and hard as nails playing that role early in the year.

Seems like a Ross Lyon special too.

I don't think Hasties defensive game is good enough to play the lock down role.

Where has this talk of Ro requesting a trade last year come from?

I dont recall ever hearing about this before the last week or so.

Is there anywhere where a club official has acknowledged this?

I'm happy to accept it if there is proof. But at the moment it seems like a comforting myth.
It was definitely discussed here twelve months ago that he asked for a trade. Not sure if a club official has mentioned it though.

Seems common knowledge with both Saints and Cats fans.

Trade radio has touched on it a few times in the last week aswell

Could be wrong but pretty sure this is revisionist history. There were rumours, which in retrospect didn't come out of thin air, but he never requested a trade

Not unreasonable to suggest he had his head turned by Geelong in 2024 but decided to stay, and then having to give up the number 1 ruck role this year was the turning point to formally request a trade.

TBH given playing with Ro was part of our sell to TDK, if we were not simultaneously trying to sell that vision to RoMa then that's a **** up on our part.

Future first could just mean it holds more value in the trade. Another club, ie Hawthorn with CMac, could want a F1 instead of something that will end up being a pick in 20s this year.

Basically, thinking we want an F1 to actually use next year may not be correct.
Might be able to jump into the earlier part of the first round this year with live trading.

I see Hastie further up the ground, Stocker will need to shed a few kgs but I really like the way he plays.
Look at Brisbane’s Backline.

Wilmot, Fletcher, Starcevich, Zorko and Lester as their small/medium defenders.

Starcevich normally lockdown on the dangerous small.
Lester normally lockdown on 3rd tall.
Fletcher, Wilmot and Zorko all rotate through and take the lesser dangerous options so they can be more attacking.

I see Stocker as our Starcevich and Sinclair as our Zorko.
Think Hastie/Trav can be the Wilmot/Fletcher type and
Wilkie or Tauru (if not swung forward) play the 3rd tall with Caminiti/Silvagni/Howard/Aleer taking the other 2 talls

Probably selling him a bit short at this stage, he's ahead of LOC on raw talant. LOC was also trialled in the midfield late so it remains to be seen where he ends up. Hastie IMO will likely follow from Wilkie in any event since he's got the tools.
