My thoughts exactly.

He didn't sign the one year deal that was put in front of him mid way through this year, so I reckon this story has a bit of legs.

I'd be filthy if we let him go and he ends up being a cult figure at one of the bigger clubs.
If we had a contract in front of him, we are not letting him go, he is leaving

This thread is like watching a Christopher Nolan movie. We're in the present discussing trade prospects, then we're flung back 7 years talking about what we gave up for Jared Polec, then we're catapulted forward a year discussing Cooper Trembath and Matt Whitlock as KPFs in 2026 only to be thrown back 2 years questioning if trading our 2025 F1 was a smart move. I seriously can't keep up.

Is it though? How many pick 3s do we already have on the list? How many do people think we need? How many do the top teams have?

Top teams have good mature players, we do not and we can't attract them to the club so the best course of action is to accumulate elite quality talent whilst we get experience into the talent we have acquired.

The problem isn't taking a risk, the problem is if there is something fundamentally wrong with list management and being aware exactly where you are at and what you need to do to improve.

I think the right time to invest in the future was 2023, but our club chronically overrated where we were at and I think kept expecting us to improve just by adding list cloggers to our list.

There is going to be elite mids in every draft, it doesn't matter which drafts you pick them up in but we have just been taking anyone that is good regardless if they would gel in our setup or not. Part of what has been holding us back is the midfield doesn't gel like a proper midfield, everyone is ball hunting and we have no idea what to do after we win the ball.

It was pretty obvious to me in 2023 we weren't going to be taking any quantum leaps forward without something significant changing, and nothing did. That was the year to take a proper look at the list and where the holes were and address it.

We were given an end of first round pick for 2023 and two end of first round 2024 picks that we didn't need to trade out for players, plus our two extra rookie spots. They said they would have reviewed our 2024 picks but we were going nowhere in 2024, we wouldn't have lost them.

So what we did:

Traded 2024 pick 19 and pick 44 to Swans for Stephens and pick 25.
Traded 2024 pick 20 to GC for pick 18
Traded picks 21 and 25 to Carlton for Fisher and 17
Traded pick 65 to Richmond for Bigoa Nyuon
Traded pick 48 to Port for 2024 4th round pick

We drafted
McKercher #2
Duursma #4 (McKay compo)
Dawson #22 (Carlton trade)
Hardeman #23 (GC trade)

I am happier with the Dawson and Hardeman pickups than I am with the McKercher and Duursma ones. They are great talents but we got McKercher after knowing Tasmania was coming in soon and would be a major flight risk, we also didn't have a midfield spot for him so just left him at half-back. Duursma a great talent but we have made zero effort to integrate him into the side.

I think we should have cashed in picks 2 and 4 for later picks and get some future picks. We were linked with both Curtin and Caddy but they were out of the 2-4 range. Bulldogs paid picks 10, 17 and 2024 1st round pick in exchange for pick 4, 46, 51 and 2024 3rd round. Melbourne paid 14, 27 and 35 to move up 14 to 11. Geelong and Richmond traded their first round picks during the draft. There was scope for us to move into the Curtain and Caddy range, get some extra 2024 picks, not trade our assistance picks and still have currency for Dawson and Hardeman.

We should have Curtin, Caddy, Dawson and Hardeman plus a massive crop of picks for 2024 in the region where all the KPP talent was. We could have still taken FOS and replaced all the list cloggers for top end KPP prospects.

Trading our 2025 first round pick for pick 27 was a symptom of botching the 2023 period. We've had to shove our list full of amateur league footballers because we dropped the ball on list management. On the plus side, that act of desperation has unearthed a decent prospect in Trembath.

Had we done that we could have still picked up an elite quality mid in the 2025 draft, but pick someone that we think will gel well with what we have, even if they are not the 3rd best player of the pool. There is no point getting the best available if we have too many like them and they wont get game time.

Wouldn’t 2 young key positions forwards be better than 1?
But Whitlock is the second?

In terms of overall list balance... Larkey, Darling, Trembath, and Whitlock seems like reasonable KPF depth to me?

Especially with CCJ in a vaccuum-sealed break-glass capsule, and Bull able to play larger if necessary (and then Duurs in turn able to substitute Zurhaar).

I'd be worrying more about our dearth of small lockdown defenders and defensively accountable midfielders than holding onto Maley, personally.

And just like a Christopher Nolan film, there's a lot of disorienting chaos only to finish emotionally uninvested.

Trembath plays 3 good games in dead rubber games and suddenly all our KPF issues are solved? Right...
They're far from solved but they look far less of a concern than they did before he made his debut. And despite them being "dead rubbers" a 19 year-old who has never played anywhere near that level previously still had to take the marks and kick the goals. He did those things exceptionally well in 3 consecutive games.

He could go to Collingwood and 50 goals and there would still be no one sacked at NM...

Mr North Man has been right all along lol

It feels very much like Tenet at the moment, I have no idea what's going on and I don't understand what anyone is saying.

I thought whitlock was a defender?

Scares me how many on that list could easily get a gig with us.

It's like Vonnegut wrote:
The NMFC BF board can look at all the different list management decisions just that way we can look at a stretch of the Rocky Mountains, for instance. They can see how permanent all the moments are, and they can look at any decision that interests them. It is just an illusion we have here on Earth that one Brady Rawlings blunder follows another one, like beads on a string, and that once a moment is gone it is gone forever.
