You want to be the club they have to trade with, not the club that they take an uncontracted player for free from.
You just know that the high draft picks will go to Geelong, Collingwood etc for 32 year olds while we will lose an uncontracted A grader and get an end of first compo.
Yeah of course. The more ex Port players we have in AFL administration and other clubs, the more intel/benefits we get. As the AFL doesn’t share information freely

Lat weekend the Herald Sun had an article on how many Father-Son picks, NGAs and Academy picks each club has had. The archive site has the story but doesn't produce the graphics and full analysis of all 18 clubs. The Collingwood bit was taken from a post on their big footy board.
But which clubs have benefited the most from the two draft concession rules since their inception? The results might come as a surprise. Father-sons taken before the advent of the draft in 1986 were not included in this list – so you will not see Stephen Silvagni for Carlton, as he arrived at the Blues in 1985. But his son, Jack, is there.
As for Northern Academy and NGA products, only those selected in the national draft were included. So the likes of Gold Coast defender Bodhi Uwland – who went unclaimed in the national draft and was picked up at the very end of the rookie draft – also do not make this list. Games played is also for the club that player was drafted to. So Jack Steele accounts for just 17 games for the Giants, because he was then traded to St Kilda where he has played the bulk of his career.
Collingwood boasts a total of 1406 games’ worth of experience from a combined 20 father-son and academy products to lead the AFL in both categories. Its 17 father-sons are five more than the next-best (Geelong and Carlton) while its three academy selections are equal with Essendon and Fremantle for the most outside of Queensland and NSW. The Magpies average 73 games from their father-son draftees but have told 2025 prospect Tom McGuane they will not match a bid on him in this year’s draft, which has come as a surprise to rival clubs and talent scouts.

If everything stays the same, Brisbane, Sydney, GWS and the Gold Coast will surpass Collingwood and Geelong in a few years.

Clifford warrior?Eugene warriors relation?
It is a family name, One of Eugene's middle names is Clifford.
Norwood's Clifford is the son of Clifford Warrior snr and father and son have played league footy together for Mallee Park (Jnr was 14yo).
I assume he's from Port Magpie's old EP zone, so would be eligible for Port that way.
He was a member of the 2025 AFL Flying Boomerangs program

Sam De Palma and DCK probably the best of the lot been playing pretty well this year in the SANFL u16’s as underagers

The Commission meeting was on 31st October re changing NGA rules post 2026, so this is relatively quick action by the AFL.
In Twomey's story he states;

The AFL faced a similar decision in 2023, when Ryley Sanders' process of Indigenous identification took many months before he was added to North Melbourne's Next Generation Academy in his draft year.
That year, under previous NGA rules, the club wouldn't have been able to match a bid on Sanders given his status as an early pick, but with the rules now open for matching bids at any point of the draft, Port Adelaide will be able to access Cochrane next year. [that link is to the 2nd August 2024 big rule changes for more than just NGA players]
The AFL will be tightening its bidding system next year and has advised clubs they are likely to be able to use two picks to match a bid, with other controls dependent on ladder position likely to also be included in the next iteration of the system.
However the League's decision on Cochrane's NGA status means the Power will be able to select him at the draft, with the unique talent the early favourite to be the No.1 pick in 2026.

Just gotta hope the AFL don't make him all but impossible to match with some sort of bullshit rule, as i'm sure you guys are looking at with Koby Bewick as well. Fingers crossed the rules stay as they currently are.
Will be interesting what the AFL land on. I understand the need to stop compiling late picks to pay for kids taken early, but it should never come to the point where matching an academy kid costs 2 x first round picks. Makes no sense.
yep kinda hoping Koby is hidden to some degree, Lions get to get Ashcrofts with late picks and we miss out. And annable cheaper in a premiership year than what we will pay for Bewick/ Cochrane.
My suggestion is that in order to match a bid you must:
1. Not trade out your pick in that round- for Dougie we must use our R1 pick
2. If you still don’t have enough points you must use your next pick- for us, Carlton’s F2
3. If you still don’t have enough points, your future pick from the same round soaks up the points deficit- for us our F1 (2027) has a ….. points deduction.
You are guaranteed to get your NGA or FS but you pay a fair price.
It would be a travesty if you are forced to get a top 5 or top 10 pick to match but you can’t because the clubs with the relevant picks demand Butters and Rozee and Bergman to hand over that pick. The NGA and FS rules have never made you rely on trades to get your man.
The evil they are trying to end, is clubs using multiple low value picks to get high end players. My suggestion does that without depriving clubs the opportunity to pay a fair price for their FS or NGA.

Seems pretty simple. A first round bid needs a first round pick to match it. Whether that is pick 1 or pick 18 should be irrelevant. If they want to get technical, make it that it has to be your original 1st rd pick, not one that you have traded in.
