Congrats on your 160cm full back. Enjoy missing out on the 8 again despite having a top 4 list again next year.

Perhaps spend the off season coming up with some new material. It was funny the first time. 1054th time not somuch.

Enjoy your 60th flag reunion, should be a great night for the 3 supporters that remember it.

This will be one of the first trades completed when the window opens. Saints have so much to get done. Take your F1 or future F1, then you can move on with the other 10 trades you have to get done.

Whatever happens , we will get our man. We always do. The rest is window dressing

Mackie and his current approach work fine but thanks for your concern.

Marshall is well and truly on, clubs discussed a deal this afternoon in fact.

Turns out this board was a really good gauge.

Nobody (except Damien Barrett) ever thought a sh1tty F1 this year was getting it done
Plenty of Cats said 19 and F2 is a high as Geelong would go
Plenty of Saints said F1 was the minimum (and probably still not enough)
Both were right

My question is, if we could all see this, what on Earth was Marshall's management group thinking telling him to go public whith this request? They must have got some indication that one side would give. I am genuinely curious which one

From our end, we have said no all the way along (unless something seriously weighted towards the club turned our heads). Did Geelong give some promise to Marshall they would get it done? If so, genuinely pretty ordinary to get a contracted player to nominate, then wait to the last minute to up the offer from a week ago (barely) and try to 'win' the deal. That leaves no space for further dialogue. If he is contracted either pay up (like we did with Flanders, GC with Trac or Sydney with Curnow) of F off (like Hawthorn with Merrett). The clubs that got deals done for contracted players left plenty of time to discuss offers. None of this wait for a week and offer something at the last second crap. Its heroball stuff trying to 'win' a negotiation, rather than find something that genuinely works for both parties

IMO clubs really need to stop trying to pay a 'fair price' for contracted players. You can either have fair price, or contracted goods. Not both (unless it is busted goods like Oliver of JUH, which Marshall was not)
I agree with all that.
On Geelong they wouldn't have made bad promises even Lyon said Mackie is a good operator.
I think the manager simply thought st kilda would do it for 19 and extras and once st kilda dumped Steele's salary they weren't going to do it. Fair enough for all.

I feel that this years draft class being weak and tassie coming in made this trade hard.

Curnow and Petracca were traded with a lot of picks, my club went straight to the first rounder (albeit for a 24 year old) and Hawks did not get Merrett (do wonder if his contract was front loaded too)

Doesn't help that Geelong most years finishes top 4 or near it.
And Geelong doesn't pick up a bunch of father son or nga's like people pretend they do.

This year's Grand Final team had no father son or NGA players. Brisbane had about 7 guys who fell under those categories (F/S, Northern Academy) and another few who were injured or didn't make the side.

Cats have to draft with late picks or rookie picks and then go after guys through Free Agency or Trade to get blokes in.

I reckon if the Cats had just offered F1 it would have been done.

We traded out of this years draft already.

Why would we trade back into it.

We were never going to offer that though as I said weeks ago. Which is fair enough. Both clubs did what was best for them.

To be honest the difference between 19 + F2nd and a F1st ia so minimal that I think everyone is just surprised they didn't take it

Part of the issue is st kilda is tight for list spots (although i would delist about 10 blokes on their list but with contracts you cant) and they clearly didnt rate this draft so they only wanted future picks which we weren't offering.

I think the Merrett and Marshall news is good for the AFL landscape.

ie Bottom 10 teams key contracted players being "whined" and dined by top 4 teams who then don't follow through with equivalent trade value being rebuffed.

Player managers will need to better balance length of contract given the inflation being offered to traded/free agent players.

Both Hawthorn and Geelong made very reasonable offers. Arguably overs given the Merrett and Marshall's ages.

I get Stkilda wanting to keep Marshall. They're clearly all in for the short term. I'm not really backing it to work but holding him to try makes sense. If they didn't accept a first and future 2nd they were probably never trading him which is fair enough.

Essendon refusing a very good offer from Hawthorn given where they sit is just madness. Great for 16 other clubs though.

Have enjoyed your input and a few of the other cat fans as well. Complete opposite to the Wilkie thread.. Cheers and good luck next year.
Thanks. Try to be clear and unbiased. Don't know where the blind spot was on this one because it seemed pretty straightforward.

Hope Marshall make it work. He seems like a good bloke
