Autopsy David Koch and the Vanillarization of Port Adelaide (by tribey)

Koch has been planning to leave for some time now. He has coverted a place on the AFL Commission and being its Chairman to take over from Goyder whenever he leaves or is forced out.
As you suggest REH, Koch would have been coveting a spot on the AFL Commission `for some time now' and if he gets a gig (particularly the chairman's role) it may have even been the carrot placed on the end of the stick by the AFL for taking on the Power job.

If it does happen many Port supporters could probably see it as a win, win, (1) the bloke is out of Alberton, and (2) having someone in a national role (and hopefully for the right reasons) should at the least give the PAFC a stronger profile in the place where the decisions are made!

One less bald person at the club.

According to Wilson on the agenda setters, Koch was at very long odds to get the AFL gig and there's at least two or three in front of him, with the former Western Bulldogs president, Peter Gordon a front runner (and apparently being backed very heavily by Eddie McGuire)

Early on in the process he and the Geelong prez were lobbying hard for the gig.

As an aside, if you’ve ever seen the fly-on-the-wall doco about Footscray’s 1996 season — Year Of The Dogs — Gordon comes off like a defeated, burnt out figure, to the point where teenage me perceived him to be someone later comparable to Brett Duncanson.

A successful businessman in his own right and adored his footy club, but bit off more than he could chew, and was getting crushed by the weight, scale and popular hostility of it all (instability, player revolts, struggling onfield, financial struggles, stadium rationalisation, media fitting them for merger/relocation, the works).

He gets replaced by David Smorgon, who represents fresh blood, armed with the Western Bulldogs rebrand, backing Terry Wallace to take the job fulltime, and away they go for the foreseeable future.

30 years on and Gordon has obviously long since returned and left again (2012-2020), but looks like a f#%king titan, pumping millions of his own wealth into the club and delivering flags across all grades (AFL, AFLW, VFL).

Hopefully Dunc got in on the ground floor with crypto, is the point I’m making(?).

In 1989 Peter Gordon was only 31 or 32 when he threw his hat in the ring to help save the club. He had just been made partner at Slater and Gordon. He wasn't related to Hugh Gordon who help set up the firm in 1935.

His 7 years before he handed over to David Smorgon, was a constant battle with the AFL, threat of mergers, financial constraints, new clubs coming in to make it tougher to compete, etc. They had negative net assets, so without personal and bank guarantees they would have been trading insolvent. That is a huge burden to carry around year after year.

It was probably 7 off field years, the equivalent of what Port experienced between 2010 and 2012. No wonder he looked burnt out and the Smorgon family were politically well connected billionaires at the top end of town compared to Gordon at the time, so Smorgon could do things Gordon couldn't.

And Smorgon came in saying we aren't the little loser club anymore. In the doco you see ex captain Rick Kennedy and others in the Smorgon group in suits and get Wallace and his staff to dress in suits to project a completely new image.

Gordon in Garry Linnell's great 1995 Football Ltd book, admits he underestimated how big a job it was. He was a good lawyer, but not a business man in 1989. He had never been a director of a company before and said in the book - "I spent my first few (AFL directors) meetings there absolutely shitting myself. And I believe that was something they knew and understood."

He says it wasn't until 1992 that he started to feel confident in his role as Footscray president. That's also the year Terry Wheeler took over and brought them onfield success - 16 wins, finished 2nd at the end of the minor round and got to the PF.

15 years later when he comes back as prez, he and the AFL world have changed markedly.

Goyder has just been replaced by Craig Drummond, does this mean we’re stuck with Koch? 😔

Koch has been planning an exit for awhile. I suspect he will be around until the end of 2026 now that he wont get a gig at the AFL Commission.

According to the AFL Drummond has taken Goyder's position on the commission but is not necessarily the new chairman.

"Goyder, who has been Chair since 2017, has confirmed he will step away from the Commission in March having been there since 2011. His replacement as Chair will be determined by the 18 club representatives at the Commission's Annual General Meeting in March."

Somewhat relieved its not Peter Gordon.

He has questionable opinions on the pedo scandal at the Bulldogs.

Imo he's no chance. Its really annoying he hangs on at Port waiting to achieve his goal while compromising us in the process. Can't stand Koch & his stupid opinions on anything football related.

Also sick of the influence McGuire has on the Afl. Imo he has had a major role in influencing the way Port is viewed in Vic. And its about time Collingwood travelled to Adelaide to play Port & not the Crows.

Well we dodged having more people that Eddie wants on the AFL Commission. Instead we get an ex-Geelong Chairman.

Yay. :geelong::neutral:
