Scandal Tom Silvagni convicted of rape

No, it's not an issue that he's supporting his son, and choosing to believe his son. Not an issue at all.

I'd be surprised if you wouldn't do the the same, in his position. It's easy to cast judgement on him from a distance, though.
His son has been convicted of rape. It’s beyond believing your son. Do you understand the law or are you a sovereign citizen?

maintain his innocence? consider an appeal? clear this name? oh dear

There might have been an argument that this could have been a case of his word against hers, with no clear evidence. But when he faked the uber receipt, that was the admission of guilt. He would not have tried to cover up the crime if he was innocent.
I know.

What I find interesting is Silvagni is the one getting a platform here.

I know he's high profile and so he brings in views to the news etc but that's kind of the problem too.

“He told the court Silvagni had suffered additional punishment from the extensive media attention, following the suppression over his identity being lifted on Thursday.

Silvagni should also receive a lighter sentence because his time in custody would be more difficult due to his poor mental health and risk of suicide, Mr Hallowes said.”

How do Lawyers sleep at night..

Was about to post the same thing, I get wanting to support his son but what the **** is SOS doing being the one to provide statements declaring his son's innocence? Have the lawyers that he's paying the big money handle that side of things. Especially when Silvagni is making these statements after he wasn't even willing to hear the victim's impact statement.

Can only guess his lawyers are thinking that having his tearful famous father saying to a ton of press that his son is innocent is more beneficial to an appeal than the lawyers doing it in front of a much smaller audience, and they know better than me so I guess they might be right?

If St Kilda was a respectable club they would part ways with Silvagni immediately. But it's St Kilda.
This a bit harsh. You can't punish him (and the rest of his family) for his kid's crime. Well you can I spose but its not really fair. Plenty of otherwise good people believe stupid stuff.

The issue with him saying that stuff is that he's given the platform imo.

Can't happen in criminal trials as the police/prosecution are the ones taking the case to trial, not the accuser.

And yes it's a criminal act to try and pay off the state.

Civil cases you can pay off prior to trial though, well in the states you can. Am sure it'd be the same here.

Yes, you can offer a settlement for a civil case (at least in Victoria; I'm admitted to the legal profession here, but have never practised).

It's actually a requirement of Civil Process that any reasonable options are explored prior to trial. A lot of the time that does involve an offer to settle, though if the plaintiff doesn't feel sufficiently compensated that's when they can proceed to trial with both parties saying they met the requirement to explore pre-trial options.

Well his son is a convicted rapist and he is publicly proclaiming his innocence. As a high profile employee of your cub, you don’t think that might be an issue and a distraction for your club?
As he's breaking down in tears. Possibly because he realises what he is saying is factually wrong.

I hope its that and he's not just crying for the sake of his lost reputation.

He might just be emotionally ****ed up cos of what's happened too.

If one of my kids was on the way to prison I'd be in tears and if I had a son who did that I'd be pretty devastated too, on top of that.

Whatever he thinks and whatever the rights and wrongs of what he said he shouldn't have been put in a position where he could comment on it. That's not really his fault. Seven was never gonna give the victim or some victim's advocate a voice instead. That's the issue imo.
