Id imagine the club employed S&C staff would have some inkling as to what they are doing. Its not like they just walked into Fitness First and grabbed the first jacked dude they saw and said "yep, you obviously know what youre doing ".

I would assume all players would have been instructed and also possibly have access to regular gym staff or a trainer on site?
Do you think they are left to work it out for themselves or teach other? Just sounds odd to hear players being called out for poor technique?
Are you across what training they receive to help them with their gym and weights. Would find it bizarre if they didn’t receive training or received poor technique training.
How do you think this is happening?

I didn't dissect the video in question and not to trigger some gym bros lol but also prob need take into consideration it's for the 'gram'

Also you have some exercises that are for lift as heavy as others, others for explosiveness and mix

But yeh would think they employed that has good knowledge and wouldn't be doing something that could be a safety issue ..they'd prob get the sack

There was a debate about technique a few years back, essentially the answer was the technique and explosiveness needed for powerlifting is different to AFL, thus the training and technical is different. One size does not fit all.

It looks to me like they have "general weight training" technique, not powerlifting technique. Most physios, PTs etc can teach how to lunge, squat, bench, deadlift (and all equivalent weight machine varieties).

It doesn't look like they have had anyone come in with proper powerlifting techniques though - which for most casual gym goers is fine. For professional athletes who are trying to maximise strength and power though, they would benefit from the proper technique.

Think of it this way - if they were squatting, deadlifting, benching to 70% or 80% of their maximum, are they likely to get injured? Probably not. Especially if it isn't high volume. If they start doing testing to find out their absolute maximum? Much more likely to get injured (or be unable to reach their full potential).

The comments on here are an overreaction. We have seen a snapshot via JT and yes the squat technique could be mildly improved but there was a trainer right there guiding and spotting. Form is very important don’t get me wrong but I’ve seen plenty of other pictures where they are lifting smaller weights and concentrating on form and intrinsic core, rotator cuff etc.

I understand the concern around the form with the trainer right there but whilst form for the heavy squat could be improved it wasn’t that bad. Hopefully the trainer was providing feedback that we didn’t see.

Given the amount of time they spend on their feet during the week I think you could argue that anything other than a few reps of near max capability is junk volume to their bodies.

There's a joke in there about needing to get them putting in the reps on their back too but I can't quite land it.

70-80% of 1RM is perfect for strength. Even with perfect form and technique they'd be risking ligament and tendon injuries by pushing their 1RM, plus they'd be getting considerably less total volume and time under tension than if they were pushing 3-5 reps at 80% 1RM.

okay but you should go and have a look at the video of Reidy "benching" at Carlton....there's a trainer(?) spotting him and judging by the whole thing I'm not convinced that guy is even from a fitness first, probably just the first jacked guy they saw walking outside ikon park

honestly the form around the rotator cuff type work is much more important, you're right. And that has seemed to be pretty decent, as has their running and jumping form.

if anyone finds and watches the Reidy benching vid, you'll see what I mean. It wasn't just the JT squat, it's really any of the big 3 lifts when they start pushing their limits. I brought up the form as a bit of a side note, what else is there to do in offseason other than overreact on very limited information?!

Yes, the joke is, I must be tired by now.
Ok, here goes:
1. Have a training partner, but don't have each other's phone number.
T'was the summer of 95/96 & me & my mate trained a 3 day split over 6 days a week at World gym in South Perth. We couldn't call each other (pre mobile phones), so we just showed up so as to not let each other down. Once at the gym, we just got down to it. Getting there was the hard part. I got so big my doc asked if I was on "vitamin S" as we called it, back in the day.
2. Compound exercises. Technique is key, but the pay-off is (well) compounded
3. Reformer pilates - omg. I found this about 10 years ago. This complements weight training perfectly & the classes are a nice counter to weight training

I have not been in Perth since January 2013, & for my last few years there i was busy being a single dad, so I wonder if worlds gym in south Perth is still there?

And I bet people pigeonholed you for being extremely muscly.

That takes dedication, pumping, resting, sleep, water, nutrition. There's so much scientific literature these days to help.

I have a different story to you. I hurt my back doing renovations at my old house and tried yoga but it didn't fix the pain I was in. So I eventually taught myself weight lifting. Since then a guy who i know who was a powerlifter in Perth reached out to me and he has transformed my body. I don't have lower back pain anymore. My life feels great and my testosterone levels are through the roof.

I recommend it to anyone. It helps reduce anxiety and depression and gives you a bit of extra get up and go throughout the day.

Plus it's great as I have completely broken my desire to drink.

Peace and happiness to everyone who likes to challenge themselves in life, like learning a new skill or taking their time to help others who need some support.

Reidy’s form on the bench press was terrible. Arching the back butt off the bench. Really looks like ego lifting. I agree the form for the very heavy squats they Voss and JT certainly needs some work but at least they had spotters supporting each lift.

If ego is not the driving factor, i reckon bench with feet up, either crossed at the ankles or on the bench, either way with knees bent is the way to go.
Have been doing it that way for years.
I don't go by numbers, I go by the "burn".
I've been off training with injuries for a couple of months, but have a follow up meeting with my orthopaedic surgeon tomorrow, so hopefully he gives me the ok 2 return 2 the gym.
TLDR?
Bench with feet off the ground, but be careful

TRAINING REPORT - random notes

• Flags half-mast for Bondi shooting was a nice touch
• Good vibes from the boys, very vocal
• Brennan Cox the only attendee of the rehab group, light jogs and laps and water weights with occasional support from Luke Ryan: “you’ll be cramping all over tonight big boy”
• Darcy and Chapman? also on lighter duties
• Midfield and forward groups worked on f50 entries from stoppages on the wing while defensive groups did handballs in congestion. Looked to be a non-contact session, not many tackles
• A lot of indiscriminate positioning, most interesting to me was Clark and Freddy spending lots of time with the midfield group, Clark in particular had a few nice kicks inside 50. Jackson spent equal amounts of time midfield and forward
• Hope to see Raz take JOM’s spot next year, he improved bounds and looks very comfortable now with the rest of the mids
• Already been noted but Dudley has definitely slimmed down, a lot more competition for small forward spots next year so he’s gonna have to work hard
• Kickett is a great rover, always in the right spot at the ball drop. If he can put on a few kgs he’ll be a talent
• Scerri? (the train on) is very short but he’s got a good kick on him. I see a bit of Switta in him
• O’Driscoll is an inside player, his ability to burst away from stoppages is his point of difference and he did it a number of times but he needs to really work on his kicking if he wants to break into the midfield group. A few really shitty kicks inside 50
• I’d be disappointed if Serong is not the next captain. Very vocal, very supportive, works tirelessly and always supporting teammates
• Bolton did a mid air volley to Reid in space which was nice
• Treacy’s left foot is as good as his right foot
• Voss definitely has an aura, even from the other side of the ground he’s very noticeable
• Amiss looks much better on a lead as opposed to wrestling with his opponent. He’s a Gunston/Cameron prototype and he needs to study those players and how they play
• Simpson (who was training with defenders) pulled up proppy after one of the handball drills, hopefully nothing
• Not sure if Carr is going to make it, still very slight and doesn’t offer any point of difference
• McVee looks to have slotted into the group well

There was a drone flying over-head so wondering if we’ll get any footage.

Nothing much to add training wise apart from likeing the look of a young bloke with bushy, light hair looking very good. Pace and a good kick, though slight and average height. He as were a couple of others were wearing orange bibs. In desperation to find out who he was I asked Brett Retichi ( media guy). He said that he was one of our NGA kids though he didn’t know his name.

One of our most creative ball users in the forward half and one we need the ball with as much as possible around that 50-70m from goal.

Can't kick over 45m and for whatever reason doesn't seem to be able to kick at goal but he's genuinely almost at Murphy Reid levels for going inside fifty.
