Huh!? Aren't we all rating them on what they're capable of?
No. They're all capable of BOG performances. We're rating them on how they're likely to perform.

Yep, that's why opposition teams spend more time planning on how to nullify him than they do any other player in the competition.

And yet another great example of how little you know about football.

And what do you know? Supported by Walshy...
More eye test nonsense 😂

Pretty certain every gun KPF in the comp gets at least twice the opposition attention that Nicky does (who's doesn't even get tagged every game 🤡)

You're rating them on how they're likely to perform based off of nothing though 😂

Newcombe has never in his career put together a consistent A grade season
It depends where you set the bar for A grade. He hasn't put together an AA season - which is a really high bar for a midfielder. Depends on whether Cripps was injured this year or in decline, but I wouldn't be betting on Newcombe or any of the Carlton mids to put together an AA season in 2026 - but I'd have Newcombe at the shortest odds.

And I'm discussing it with someone rating a player who's never played afk above him - which is next to nothing. Not to mention rating Cerra above him. That's just delusional.

Right...

So you've got the player who's never come close previously ahead of the 2x Brownlow Medallist and a previous All Australian who's performed at a higher level than Newcombe pretty much any time he's ever been fit throughout his career?

No wonder Sportsbet and the rest rake in millions from nuffies each year

If Cripps gets his best footy back, he's well above Newcombe - so is Scott Pendlebury. Pendles is no chance of that. Cripps much more likely. He's a champion of the game. But he is coming off a mediocre year - stuff all the recruits, getting Cripps firing again is the whole preseason game for the Blues.

Jai Newcombe 2023
AA Squad
Runner Up (2 votes) to Day in Hawks Best and Fairest
18 votes in Brownlow Medal (eq. 17th)
63 votes in Coaches Award (eq. 15th)

Jai Newcombe 2024
Hawks Best and Fairest
24 votes in Brownlow Medal (10th)
69 votes in Coaches Award (eq. 14th)
15 Coaches Votes in 2 Finals

Jai Newcombe 2025
4th in Hawks Best and Fairest
17 votes in Brownlow (eq.20th)
18 Coaches votes in 3 finals

If you're not rating him as an A Grader, you must only have a half dozen A Grade midfielders in the competition.

Daicos
Bont
Butters
Neale
Serong
Heeney

Because they're the only 6 midfielders who have clearly outperformed him over the past 3 seasons.

I can't stand Newcombe, so can't believe I'm defending him, but he's an excellent player. And still only 24. So you'd expect improvement from here.

Oh boy, you forgetting Cripps mate.
His last 3 seasons have been awful i suppose. Pure hatred is all i can put it down to - nothing more

Cripps has been CLEARLY better than Newcombe over the past 3 seasons, when Newcombe has outperformed him in 2 of the 3 seasons?

Jai Newcombe is a top 7 midfielder over the last three years in the whole competition?

You cannot possibly think that's true my word

Cripps is a champion ( and a rare likeable Blue). If he gets back to anywhere near his best, it's Cripps by the length of the Flemington straight.

Us mugs never know what injuries these blokes are carrying, but to be bullish on Cripps, I'd want to know, because in 2025 he was pretty ho hum.

I'm saying he's in the next rung after that top 6, who are the only midfielders who have CLEARLY been better based on performance.

Unless you can nominate another midfielder who has CLEARLY performed better than him?

We've already had Cripps nominated, and that was a negative.

Jai Newcombe is the 7th best mid in the comp over the last 3 seasons???

This has to be troll?

Like please tell me you aren't being serious... No person deserves to be that dumb

Does Errol Gulden play golf or something? Clearly ahead of Newcombe who I rate highly but has not been close to a top 6 mid in the AFL.

Not going to bother with Cripps. Plays for Carlton so that's an immediate non-starter.

I just noticed Serong a top 6 midfielder in the last 3 years. Not even the best midfielder at his club let alone top 6 in the AFL.
Stick with me and you'll learn a few things about footy.

If Serong's not the best midfielder at his club, why do opposition coaches give him a lot more attention than Brayshaw?

Gulden impacted by the half season he missed in 2025. But other than that, he would have been.

I'm glad you edited our your questioning of Serong. Serong is fantastic.

Fremantle’s most impactful midfielder is Hayden Young. Has had some bad luck injury wise over his career but in terms of impact it's not even close since he has moved into the midfield. Serong is an inside midfielder who distributes it to the better users which is why he cops attention. Historically, he also has not dealt well with a tag which is why teams will keep doing it.

Based on overall impact I would have it as Young, Brayshaw (one of the best two way mids in the AFL) and then Serong.
