Rita Panahi: In a sane world every single individual at the Hawks who played a role in commissioning the activist report would’ve stepped down in disgrace

Alastair Clarkson has opened up on the “injustice” of the Hawthorn racism scandal and the toll it took on him and his family. Many journalists and commentators should be embarrassed.

Alastair Clarkson’s heartbreaking revelations about the toll the Hawthorn racism scandal took on him and his family should embarrass many in the media.

The Kangaroos coach admitted he feared the ‘injustice’ of the prolonged saga would kill him.

Journalists and commentators who abandoned any pretence of fairness to join a pile-on – ready to condemn Clarkson and Chris Fagan – should feel eternal shame.

As I wrote back in September 2022 when the story broke, the Hawthorn ‘racism report’ was deeply flawed and full of obvious untruths and logical fallacies.

And, yet the usual suspects in the media were eager to uncritically accept every absurd claim.

Nine’s Caroline Wilson referred to “Hawthorn’s racist past” and called what were untested, self-serving allegations “the greatest scandal to engulf the AFL”.

The veteran reporter also slammed Clarkson for proclaiming his innocence, calling his statement “ill-advised” and “combative”.

Channel 7’s Andy Maher and basketball great Andrew Gaze may want to reflect on their deplorable commentary on SEN.

As should ABC regular Jess McGuire, who wrote: “There is simply no way to justify any of Clarkson’s behaviour, it’s like a horror film.”

Even politicians joined the pile-on, including then Greens leader Adam Bandt, who tweeted: “The reports of racist & sexist coercion at Hawthorn are sickening.”

Hawthorn Football Club should also feel deep shame for its mishandling of the saga and the damage done to Clarkson, Fagan and Jason Burt.

In a sane world every single individual at the Hawks who played a role in commissioning the activist report would’ve stepped down in disgrace.

The AFL’s failures were also notable; the league allowed the narrative to spiral into a reputational catastrophe for the three accused men.

The instinct to appease the loudest voices while pretending to occupy the moral high ground saw the ordeal drag out.

There was extraordinary pressure applied to Clarkson and Fagan to make some admission of guilt but both men stood strong and fought to clear their names.

All three men who were named and shamed without due process are owed fulsome apologies from members of the media.

Journalistic standards in this country need a massive, massive shake up IMO.

That’s all fair enough (despite my dislike for the author) but what Rita (and many others) fails to do is locate this in Kennett’s nasty attempt to discredit Clarkson

That was a pretty shit article, just trying to drum up support for her culture war rubbish and patting herself on the back. Hawthorn does have a racist past. Clarkson helped change it even if he wasn't perfect himself.

But then when she said this - untested, self-serving allegations - she didn't even delve into what was going on or who was responsible for those self serving allegations - the guy you mentioned is also someone with alot of respect on the political "side" she barracks and writes for. If she follows up on this she'll do it try and frame anti racist activism as a bad thing.

Alot of the pile on was based on people not liking Clarkson either. Fagan copped nothing like that level of crap but back then he wasn't a four time premiership coach with a reputation for ruthlessness and a bunch of enemies throughout the AFL. None of the people piling on Clarkson defended Lindsay Thomas but some of them didn't hesitate to spread similar garbage about him off the back of that racist Bulldogs bullshit.

She's right about the quality of the journalism but she's also an example of what she's talking about.

She was literally partying at Mar-a-Lago for her 50th birthday a week or so ago, cheering on gormlessly about Trump's invasion of Iran, a few days after that girl's school was bombed.

The same stupid war that's singlehanded created a global energy crisis that's pricing out everyone at the bowser and contributing to persistent inflation, exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis where a good chunk of footy fans can't afford to go to games or even subscribe to Kayo.

Please, lets not quote Rita Panahi in the footy threads.

Also loved how we’re not afraid to use the corridor.

This was so obvious. Hope it continues and we don’t go into our shell when the pressure gets hot. Better to go down swinging than lie down “kick it down the line”

Born in 1968 and since March 2020 this has been the worst stretch of history in my time right up to today

Even my footy team has resembled the Tip in this time.

Now where is that 2020’s Timecapsule thread I made?

Yeah funny that, a right wing ideologue propagandist failing to properly disclose the role of the right wing ideologue president of the “family club”. Two truly horrendous human beings.

Didn’t Panahi and RoCo have a thing at one point? Weird.

Looking at the legs on Al, not sure he isn't from the Dinkers clan.

Phil Egan who wrote the Hawthorn racism report has his court case coming up for dodgy dealings when he ran the Murray Valley Aboriginal Corporation. I wonder if the same journalists who scorched Clarko and Fagin without a conviction are willing to lob the same amount of vitriol and judgement at Mr Egan?

She was a kid when the regime in Tehran went after her dad. I can kind of understand her not liking them, but that's about it.

I was wondering what happened with this

I’m sure it affected Clarko more than we will ever know. I just have a feeling that after weathering this storm it’s going to be clear skies and far more positive and exciting times ahead for our beloved Roos ☀️
And won’t he deserve it! Shameful what he went through.
