NMFC statement re Australia Day

i like the idea of keep the date, but in the Morning its for Mourning, and then in the afternoon, PM stands for Party Mode.

A little bit like Anzac day.

With Trump ruling the roost, it’s a big test for people to show what they’re really made of right now. The inclination is to bow down - if it doesn’t directly affect you. If your values aren’t hard and fast right now, you can’t complain when the Overton window shifts drastically.

The reality is any day you pick for Australia Day is ultimately still going to be Invasion Day. Maybe my history is fuzzy but I don't remember the English coming here all guns blazing on the day they arrived, the shit started to happen some time afterwards so I don't understand what will change shifting the day to some other day. It will always be symbolic of the indigenous people losing their country and losing their right of self determination.

Ultimately, my preference would be to ditch our English royal overlords, become a republic, make a proper constitution with a bill of rights that has proper protections, like freedom of speech that can't be whittled away like every government has since the high court said we had freedom of speech and then move Australia Day to when the republic forms.

But people will bitch about that as well, you are just not ever going to make everyone happy and people who want political power and influence and the grift that comes with having political power, they are going to agitate regardless what you do because there is always someone that is prepared to step all over people when it serves themselves.

Australia Day means nothing to me, even though I consider myself to be pro Australia and somewhat patriotic... not of the symbolism of it, but of the people, the community as a whole and that includes first nation people. I understand this day pisses them off and I am happy to change it... it just isn't isn't going to make any difference.

We need to find a point where we can just move forward as a unified nation, because a thousand years from now there will not be any pureblood indigenous people left, the gene pool is going to mix and there wont be anyone left. America is only 250 years old and there are no pureblood Indians left. It is just generics, when you have 28m people and 1m first nation... if you mix a drink that is 1 part alcohol and 27 parts water it is going to taste like water. We are dealing with the here and the now issues, but these will just be footnotes in history books in the future. I do not want to diminish what anyone is feeling and anything we can do to make people feel better we should do... but I think if people understood the inevitability of us merging and what a disproportional mix will end up looking like, we know enough about the science to know what that is going to look like.

Ironically, it has really only been racism and the frowning of mixed marriages until recent times that kept the first nation bloodlines as pure as they are currently, but those days are over and if indigenous footballers are anything to go by then assimilation is in full swing.

On one hand I think it is great that we will eventually become one and united through genetics, but it somewhat sad that a people that endured for many thousands of years will eventually cease as they used to be.

Do people think this is going to pan out differently?

Its been Jan 26 since the 40’s. The public holiday component has changed. Not the date.
So what you're saying is the date has already changed multiple times.

Do you know who else has a national day on Jan 26th?

India.

That's the day they stopped being a British colony and became an independent nation.

We celebrate the day the British invaded our homeland and subjugated it for 113 years.

Me too.

That's not how it works.

If you have one g-g-grandmother who was indigenous and can prove it the mob she belonged to consider you one of them.

Its the opposite of the sort of racial purity ethno-nationalists push as an ideology. There's no pure bloodlines. That's something European aristocrats get off on, and why they **** their family members. Some indigenous people might say that stuff, because they're frustrated and ****ed up and have nothing but their identity and no one gives that any value, but most don't.

I've had this discussion with blackfellas and basically heard this:

"One day everyone will have a little bit of blackfella in them from somewhere ... and hopefully when that happens people will start looking after this country the way we should."
