great day's cricket by the Windies.

Half expected them to lose 2 or 3 wickets late in the day, but they gritted it out.

Encouraging signs.

It’s ridiculously early days and Campbell looks prone at the moment to just inexplicably having a brain explosion out of nowhere, but these two have already produced 3 opening stands better than basically anything I can remember recently from the Powell/Brathwaite combination

Still a lot of cricket to be played mate but have you thought about reassessing this prediction?

Yes. I am pretty sure that I got it wrong. Haven't seen much of it, but it appears that the West Indies are much better than I thought and England may not be as good as I thought.

Great job by the WI's again. And a mature response in thir batting. Could have easily lost 2 or 3 wickets but just bated it out and got to 0-30. Hoping they go on and get a good first inning lead. For once the English tail wagged (for one wicket anyway), lucky or could have been another score under 100

I was waiting for the inevitable rattle of wickets at the end but what actually happened was two blokes gutsing it out to be none down at the end.
Well done WI - despite the bullshit attempted scoop from Campbell who looked to be a walking wicket there for a time...
Love this thread btw.

Campbell actually looks like he has the game to be a long term option. All that’s holding him back from a better first class career thus far (based on what I’ve watched in his three Test innings) would be this propensity out of absolutely nowhere to just have an absolute brain melt.

Less whinging about India, and more toasting of another great day for the West Indies!

I’m f***ing happy that there seems to be a slowly dawning realisation that trying to beat teams by playing on slow, low, spinning wickets when a) our spinners are simply not that good and b) we don’t play spin very well, is not going to work.

Bairstow acknowledged after stumps that there are three guys in that attack who are over 6 foot (two of them bowl over 140). The fourth quick is actually the most skilled and he’s sharp enough as well. It’s giving us a bit of an identity as a team. And I ****ing love it.

Given that my first full series of watching cricket was the 96/97 tour by the West Indies, I'm feeling happily nostalgic seeing the name Campbell at the top of the West Indies batting lineup.

Don’t want to speak too soon but the way this game and the series is heading, we could see West Indies possibly whitewash England this test series. Would be a remarkable reversal of fortunes given the little chance West Indies were given in the main stream media.

I’m super happy for the West Indies so far in this second test, purely for the fact they’ve shown that the first test was not an anomaly and that they didn’t fluke a one off performance. They have a genuine side on their hands that has been slowly building over the last couple of years and their performances are becoming a lot more consistent. If they get a good run of luck with injuries, could potentially become at least a Top 4 ranked test team. Especially with the problems Australia and England are going to be facing in the near future.

I'm keeping my powder dry on the West Indies. There were two reasons why they were so dominant for an era in my mind. One of those reasons was skills based, in that most of them went to county cricket as a finishing school, and were ready for world domination because of it. The other was mental, in that they were united to prove to the world that they belonged (as described in Fire in Babylon, for example). They have lost both of these things to varying degrees, but I suspect one reason they continue to do well against England is that England represents the world they can unite together against still.

I love Shannon "the wrecking ball" Gabriel so much. At a time when a lot of his compatriots are ditching their national team for t20 franchise leagues, this guy just runs in and keeps pounding in again and again in test cricket and looks like he genuinely cares about the maroon cap.

Actually a lot of players in this Windies team look dedicated to test cricket. Gabriel, Holder obviously, Hope is a very dedicated player, Kraigg Braithwaite and the dashing young batsman Hetmyer too. This team can develop into a very good team with some experience.

This!

It was such hard work being a West Indian supporter for a good 20 years, not because they were losing but because of the spiritless way they were playing. You’ve hit the nail on the head.. they genuinely seem to give a toss about playing test cricket for the West Indies now. As a long suffering fan it’s heartwarming to say the least.

They should've been scheduled to play later this year, but instead Pakistan is playing 3 years after their last visit.

Yeah I did mate, really interesting read. Cricinfo’s coverage of this series has been excellent so far, and they’ve avoided the temptation to jump on the ‘here come the west indies’ Revival train which they easily could have done. Instead been measured, respectful (considering they are English writers generally) - I get the sense that they are waiting to see if there’s any spectacular unraveling from the hosts before going over the top about them.

Whatever happened to that real old looking opener who played in the last Ashes series in 2015? His name escapes me.
