The overwhelming reaction in Indian social media was commending Joe Root for the gesture.

It was mixed in the Pakistani forums, obviously due to the faith factor. But still the majority reaction was one of applause to Root's reply. Not sure where you got those reactions from.

It is not the worst thing said but it is pretty bad. Just the stuff I have been reading (yes, I know reading social media comments is stupid) is pretty poor. I personally don't think Gabriel is a homophobic person, just said some stupid shit.

I played amateur sport in the 90s and it was appalling, out and out homophobic. That's why this why what Root said was important, men's sport is light years behind the rest of society in dealing with LGBTQI issues.

In Australian society yes, but Gabriel's comments are very tame compared to a lot of what you'd hear in the Windies, e.g. the music industry.:

Howard's arguments seem a fairly representative example of mainstream Jamaican public opinion. Homophobia seems utterly entrenched in the island's culture, thanks to a combination of the same kind of swaggering machismo that informs hip-hop, and, more seriously, religion.

Diffused the situation quietly at the time, no post game histrionics or adding fuel to the flames actively trying to grow a brand or hammer Gabriel's reputation. Really well played considering the context Gabriel comes from, yet made such a fantastic statement. Legend

Main issue is the umpires/ICC only act when it might make them look bad. I highly doubt he would have been charged if Root's comeback wasn't picked up on the stump mic. Sure, we can praise them for taking a stand but I'd prefer they just turned the stump mics right down and avoid this sort of stuff. These sort of comments shouldn't be made but I don't want to get to a stage where players are too scared to say anything out of fear of being banned.

Disappointed we dropped so many catches and played out a lot of dot balls between the big hits, but if Roy catches Gayle on 9 then it becomes immaterial anyway.
