Last time I was in Adelaide, trawled through a couple of great pubs

Last time I was in Adelaide I ended up at The Woolshed on a Saturday night.

Replete with mechanical bull, barmaid who couldn't work out change, a guy sporting a Holden tracksuit, Bruce Doull-inspired hairdo and carrying on like an international drug kingpin. All this with one helluva parade down Hindley Street.....

As I left, a guy parked centimetres in front of a cop car did a massive burnout down an alleyway and got pulled over immediately.

I know that's not reflective of all of Adelaide. But it left a serious impression. Like a time warp into a land that time should have forgotten....

Docherty is not a great midfielder (on limited exposed form), and certainly doesn't have the junior midfield pedigree of Setterfield nor many of our other young midfielders.

A great half-back flanker, no doubt. A Rolls Royce HBF.

I'm not against Setterfield playing HBF this season. With Doc out, Willo doubtful and Setters coming back off a knee it wouldn't be a bad way to get experience and confidence. Big, clean hands and a good ball user. Then a full pre season and back on ball in 2020.

In Gibbs first season/ the year before Judd, some of our 20 and unders were Hampson, Grigg, Bower, Betts, Murphy, Walker, Russell, Gibbs, Kennedy, Harlett, Jamison and Jacobs.
That’s 5 top 8 picks (1,1,2,4,8) all 20 or under, another 4 taken before 25 plus 3 future guns Jamison, Betts and Jacobs. Again all 20 or under.

Simpson, Carrazzo, Thornton and even Fisher who kicked 39 goals that year were 23 or under.
Houlihan, Scotland, Waite and Fevola we all 26 and under. Even Stevens was only 27.
Considering at the end of that year we were given picks 1,3 and ~21 our list position looked every bit as good as it does now imo.

I think people forget how bloody highly we rated that group. The problem was we didn’t finish the job off and that’s why from now on is where SOS, Bolton and the like earn their money.

And that group got us to finals in 2009, 2010 & 2011 (plus 2013).

This time around we have 5 first round picks (1,10, 12,13 & 23) from 2015, 2 from 2016 (5 & 6) (plus Fisher), 2 from 2017 (3 & 10) and 2 from 2018 (1 & 19) that is 11 not counting Fisher. 11 is Better than 8.

Whats more if you look through the list you provided above who were the legitimate KPP's?

Finally when you look at that you see we had to trade Kennedy to get Judd, Stevens broke down almost immediately Judd arrived & Fev imploded and was gone after just 1 finals series. I don't see those things being repeated.

and anyone who thinks we will finish in the bottom three needs to have a good hard look at them self and work out what they want to represent as a human being - it makes me bloody sick. We will finish in the 8 or very near to it or I will take off all of my clothes and run as fast as i can down a one way street and scream mumma!

Chicken feed to the last time i was in New Zealand, admittedly a fair while ago, but the first 3 cars i saw on the road over there had no windows, the next one had no windscreen and the next one had no doors.

Then we hit Rotorua. Never wanna eat eggs again.

My first time in Adelaide had me rolling in after midnight.
Drove in with a lady, had a vehicle that could be slept in and we both agreed to call it a night for a few hours and get a hotel later for the next day/s.
Parked at the edge of what seemed to be a nice and quiet enough park, but all of a sudden vehicles started arriving and men started hopping from one vehicle into another. Too scared to fire up the car and drive off, so just hid under the blankets for a few hours not wanting to know what was going on around us.
Only went back to Adelaide for business after that.

Interested to see what happens with JSOS this season. Has been inconsistent over his career, seemingly down the pecking order in the forward line due to Charlie, Harry and McGovern. Too tall to play with them already there. Not mentioned in by Teague in the forwards. Has been training with the mids this preseason, but definitely not a lock given his experience in the midfield as well as competing with spots as a bigger mid with Curnow, Kennedy, Setterfield. I'm bullish on his talent and footy IQ, but would really need to step up in his midfielder skills and consistency to be anywhere close to cementing a spot for himself in the midfield let alone best 22.

A forward half comprising Charles, Harry, McG, Fas, and Cunners would make any team nervous; anyone that says otherwise is either bias or talking shite. If we had a speedy natural forward small, I dare say there would be instances of diarrhea amongst opposition defenders.

Yeh we have done easily as well but as I said these guys I mentioned were all under 20 at the start of that year. 5 of those 11 you mentioned are already 21. (I’m not trying to just pick a number to suit my narrative but it does look that way. I picked that number because the Judd trade was the next season and it makes it hard to compare because it was so unique, and Judd is incomparable to any current player because he was so much better than anyone atm. We could’ve added another pick 1,3 and 20 to the group instead)
The biggest difference was we had 9 good AFL level players in the prime age group compared to about 5 now.
It was just showing having a heap of highly rated kids on a list isn’t anything new. What would be nice is if we see more than two play a good consistent AFL level season because last year we only had two do so (Fish and Curnow)
Stevens is no difference than say Doc, that could easily happen to him.

Bottom 4 is almost certain mate.

It takes kids around 4 years in the system before they're doing more than minor contributions (barring outliers like Cripps). Even Dusty, Danger, Ablett and Watson werent setting the world on fire in their first 4 years or so.

Im expecting the class of 2015 (Weitering, Curnow, McKay, Cuningham, Silvagni) to take their games up a notch this year (and thats the message from the club as well) but SPS, Dow, LOB, Walsh, Stocker, Setterfield etc need another couple of years.

And even then, the class of 2015 really need another year.

The baby bombers won a premiership.
Our fortunes largely lie with our conditioning and injury list.
Unfortunately, our injury list is off to a very poor start.

Don't accept anything to be a fact when it's not.
Assess every clubs position just before the start of the season. Much better way to go.

One could argue that an injury list of Docherty, Pickett, Williamson, Marchbank, Lang and Macreadie heading into round 1 is somewhat glorious compared to what we've been used to.

Fancy the chances of parking at AFC pre season training

The boys at AFL house will be hoping so!

It is going to stop any chance of a loose man across halfback running through the square, which also means forwards will push closer to goal at ball ups to create space for the mids to run forward into. Center square set ups are going to be crucial this year.

Even though I like the rule, I don’t see much change at all this year as the rule will only apply roughly 4-6 times per quarter.

I see the rule this year being a trial run for an expanded version in 2020 and beyond.

In that time you couldn’t top up with free agency. Once you build a solid core of elite top 10 players you can now bring in A grade talent for nothing. If we had of done that back then what might of been. Plenty of players would of loved to come along for the ride. When we finished 5th and lost by a kick to west coast before a prelim. What might have been if we had.
Scott Thomson in his 8th year
Jonathon brown 7th year/Simon black 13th year
Alan Didak/Chris Tarrant/luke ball/Dane swan all FA possibilities
I can list more but I can’t be ****ed. Hopefully you get the point. Once you build a list you can wait and top up while keeping them together. Like Melbourne are doing. Although their top ups are arguably better than the draftees they got. Our draftees are better than theirs.

Saints failed. There picks have been to KP and they’ve ****ed that up with so many failures. Their pick ups have been injury prone dick heads. We haven’t even started to pick up the mature players that’ll get us #17.

Collingwood nearly got there. But they are lucky it all fell together at once. Their kids they picked up between 2013-2017 have sort of come on. De goey, Crisp, Phillips, Stephenson amd they got the right picks up in WHE treloar, Adams etc. they got lucky with Cox, Dunn, Greenwood, and mayne. Looking closely at their list it’s all bits and pieces of other clubs pieced together. And it worked nearly. **** all of their list was drafted by them.

Could Carlton work the same. Our kids are better than both. They will take time and after 3-4 years together cohesion will occur and the switch will flick. Look out. Can we start adding quality gap fillers. We’ve already got our Dunn (Jones), Aish (Lang), WHE (Pickett/Garlett), Greenwood/Mayne (Kennedy), I’m not gonna compare any more. But they just need time to play together now. The only thing I’m sad about is Shiel could of been our treloar although a bit older.

Watch the women’s game and it’s had a huge impact. Defensive set ups from a kick are non existent. The ball gets to 70 nearly every time. Teams rarely get repeat scores.

The 666 set up has a huge impact even if only for 4/6 times a quarter. Teams will still need to start one way then move to another on repeat bounces. You will still try to set up as 666 as it’s the most efficient use of energy. Why would a wing run an unnecessary distance if the ball is just going to come back. Why would a forward try to get back in defence if they will need to get back inside forward 50 once a goal is kicked. Teams will try to set up efficiently and that will be to remain as a 666.

If we’d kept fev when Judd arrived in a good attitude we would of had #17.

It will be interesting to see how it goes, I think the kick ins will be a positive change.

I still don’t see there being much change after the initial bounce, forwards were refuels in defence when you don’t have the ball and run back when a goal is scored.

I hope it opens the ground up a bit though.

Watch for teams who are behind or getting pummelled try and lock the ball in after the centre bounce to get a repeat ball up. Then they can revert to 1-2-3 spare men in defence. Unless teams get a clear cut centre clearance I expect a lot of repeat ball ups and teams manoeuvring their players instantly.
Where do the players come from? Are you going to lose a midfielder to d50 and the get a forward or two to make up the numbers?

How long will that take? What happens in the interim?
