Lost the tilt at being PM, she knew the writing was on the wall that she would never be more than deputy leader of the Liberal Party. Loads of ministers call it quits at a following election when their ambitions look like being unfulfilled.

they do but Bishop was steadfast on wanting a women and was going to hang on until the election was called before she pulled the pin so she could ensure that happened. Pulling the pin now vs 3 months makes no real difference to her unless she got what she wanted.

I think she will end up ambassador to a very nice spot.
Just remember who will be appointing ambassadors come May, she's no chance. I'm sure someone owes her though.

I still think Porter will weasel his way into Curtin somehow - or at least die trying. Pearce is toast at the next election and surely a PM in waiting like Porter isn't prepared to go quietly losing Pearce in May.

Julie Bishop might want a woman but since she is departing I doubt the rank and file care too much what she thinks now.

would be very very surprised if Porter makes a tilt for it, he would need to pull out of a candidate for Pearce (he has already been endorsed) and nominate for Curtin in the next 2 weeks, seems unlikely.

Porter is a grub i hope he loses and the rank and file don't like him either. So they may pick a man but i doubt it will be porter.

Maybe. I think both sides of politics know they control the 'snout in trough' positions like Ambassadorships, they wont give them up. They value then as gifts for the party faithful.

Neither side will rock the boat when it comes to this. Both sides like the money & the perks. They won't make it a partisan issue.

Labor party have appointed plenty of ex-liberals in the past and vice-versa, once the gloves are off they all scratch each other's backs.

Exactly. Plus Julie is on far better terms with the opposition than a lot of other Liberal MP's. To be honest she's probably the most qualified politician on either side to serve in a high profile diplomatic post, being the longest serving Foreign Affairs minister since Downer and the 5th longest in history.

Me too, Baz. Also a Finance Minister who knows f**k all about his personal finances. Geez we're in deep shit with this desperate miserable government.

To be fair, long term politicians have had taxpayers fund the holidays, flights for looking at real estate, attending sport, concerts, weddings, parties, anything for so long that they wouldn't expect them to show up on their personal credit cards.

When Abbott won in 2012 he essentially recalled Labor apointees to ambassadorships and cancelled any pending ones, are we expecting a Shorten government to return to the days of a more bipartisan approach to this sort of thing?

They should give Abbott the Ambassadorial position to Russia. He should practice his head but first though.;)

Not aware of any who are you referring to.

I think everyone knows Abbott is a nut regardless.

I tender a bit for govt depts, they won't even let you buy their coffee if you are having a coffee shop catch up. Say they are prohibited from receiving any benefit from tenderers, even as small as a coffee

Yep, I remember in my time in the public service one of my first memories was when someone in our team (also fairly new) received a box of Favourites from someone connected with a university for looking after one of their former students in the grad program. She opened the box and was about to tuck into one...people were practically leaping over their desks to stop her.

It's not so much whether it is a conflict of interest. The line is whether it could possibly be perceived as a COI. Which makes it so utterly mind boggling when we hear about what senior MPs get up to regularly.

Ms Bishop warned in May that she reserved the right to review the appointment as it was taking effect at the same time as the election.
She will not formally become Foreign Minister until next week but in a meeting on Monday with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade secretary Peter Varghese she indicated Mr Bracks would be recalled from the post.

Former Victorian premier Steve Bracks sacked by Julie Bishop in 'vindictive' decision

Fairfax Media understands that one of incoming foreign minister Julie Bishop's first decisions in her new position was to sack Mr Bracks on Monday.

Bishop is probably likely to get a nice cushy position if she wanted it. Some of the others on the LNP side not so much.

Not really. Beazley was the US ambassador until he stepped down and the next fat man took his place.

Actually, I think she's a very good chance. She's probably the only member of the current LNP cohort who has any chance at all. Shorten was (quite rightly) very complimentary of her, when he responded to her farewell speach. I think his respect for her is genuine (unlike the rest of the muppet show).

He isnt going to bag her on the way out its better to complement her to highlight the loss to them

I remember hearing months ago she wouldn't make a call until she was certain she could block that worm porter from taking her seat

The rich folk in subiaco and dalkeith aren't going to let a flog from Joondalup near Curtin.

They'll want one of their own.
