From an outsiders perspective:

Essendon look like the same team as last year with the same issues.
Geelong look like a new team, very refreshed.

Where are Essendon at?

Hard to tell, most of our best mids played managed minutes and we rotated a lot of players through the centre. Giving so much time and space to the Geelong mids could be either a lack of ability from our side, or a lack of effort to bother pressuring in the pre-season games.

My bigger concerns are that our back 6 look disorganised, and we're getting appalling inside 50 entries on anything other than a fast break from half-back. Effort can be fixed quickly, poor structure not so much. I would also liked to have seen more from Parish & Langford to suggest they were going to improve on 2018's output.

Shiel, Merrett & Smith all clearly have another gear in them. Stringer and Tipungwuti look well ahead of where they were at last year. Daniher and Fantasia will be better for the hit-out, and Q4 saw Daniher looking like he was being allowed to really lead hard and jump at the ball which was a positive. Young Francis, Ridley & McGrath have all improved from this time last year.

There's plenty of positives to take away, I just would have liked to see a more clear structure around the ground, and better organisation in the defensive half. Winning or losing isn't a big issue for these. Hooker really straightens the team up in terms of both his marking and leadership, so hopefully he's back pretty quickly once the season begins.

I agree, it worked so perfectly last year for you, thrashed by tigers then beaten by cats conceding 100+ in both games then hitting the season proper at top pace to be 2-6 and season over.

I see you have followed the same formula this year as well, beat up by both Carlton and Geelong conceding 100+ and now we wait for season proper where you are a massive chance to be 2-6 again and season over again.
