Biggest loser r1?

West Coast are getting of easy. The reigning premiers getting knocked off by a team that only won 5 games last year is a shock.
Good on Brisbane.

This is a hard call.

Melbourne have shown they can be good. Back of a prelim appearance, and they lose to Port in Melbourne.
the nature of the loss was disappointing too. Not one player had a good game.
That said, Port played one of the best games ive seen them play in a loooong time.

North lost to Freo. Freo without Neale. Or Hogan
And McCarthy kicked 5. And a Ross Lyon team kicked the highest score of the round against them

Essendon did what Essendon do. When the opportunity arises to bring joy to their supporter base, they find new ways to disappoint even the most jaded of us.
This one was particularly good. We got smashed by the club who we have sourced our best 2 players from in the past 2 years.
And lets be fair. GWS are a good team. Not that good, but they are good.

Crows deserve a mention here
The hawks look like a list rebuilding. And one that you would excuse for losing as they blood new players and turn over a 3 time premiership list.

Not a goal from one of their KPFs.
Dons have an excuse. Our KPF's are garbage.

I don't think the West Coast loss is that bad as while Brisbane did only win 5 games last year they looked a lot more promising towards the end of the year, and many people expect they might be fighting for a potential top 8 position this year.

The margin doesn't say it, but I would say us.

Against a mediocre bulldogs outfit, we showed that our archaic gameplan hasn't suddenly risen to prominence over the offseason. With Freo showing attacking zest this afternoon, I feel we may be the most unwatchable team in 2019, save perhaps the Suns and Blues. But even they showed some ticker this round.

North were by far the most disappointing. They talked the talk when they drafted all these players in, but couldn't walk the walk.

All the players in the world can't help a lack of a game plan.

Not really. Brisbane had a lot of very close losses against some really good teams at home last year. Our lineup and forward line in particular very very inexperienced.

Not uncommon for top four sides to struggle early the following year so Melbourne isn’t in the frame for mine, nor West Coast or Collingwood.

Had no expectations for North. It’s bad but I don’t see them winning too many and no one expects them to make the eight.

Bombers were tipped to be big improvers after storming home last year and have gone all out on mature recruitment with Stringer, Smith, Shiel and Saad the last two preseasons. Their obliteration is a shocker. Definitely have it as them.

essendon
ASADA's done, no excuses anymore. another full pre-season under the belt. added shiel, expecting to challenge for a flag.

comprehensively flogged while failing to fire a shot.

north no one expected to be any good.
melbourne and adelaide disappointing but not on the same scale.

Since I’ve been on bigfooty never seen anything like the confidence in the North boards before the game. Not sure why they thought they were so far ahead of teams like Freo, WB, Brisbane, St Kilda.

It was very all strange.

Essendon losing to the giants away from home is hardly an upset they will smash more than just the dons

Biggest loser is either Melbourne or North Melbourne

Dees made a prelim and went out and strengthened an area that they were vulnerable though mays brain fade didn’t help but port played 4 first gamers and lots of new faces they completely out played the dees and Hinkley gave Goodwin a bath in the box.

As for north not trying to offend freo supporters but a lot are tipping them to finish bottom 4 and they seemed to be a bit of hype about the Roos going out and improving the midfield then with hogan missing the Roos seemed very safe against a defensive Fremantle team but freo out played them all over the park kicking 20 goals and a massive 80 point win

Thought they were the most obvious upset of the round

North, Essendon and Adelaide. All finished in the 9-12 bracket last year and looking to show they are good enough to push into the 8. All of them looked completely inept

For all the talk of a Hawthorn decline, there hasnt actually been evidence for it. They finished 4th last year and seem to have some divine hold on us (read: far superior gameday coaching).

I dont think our loss is as bad as WCE, Melbourne, Kangaroos or Essendon. The latter 2 for the margins and the former 2 for the differentials between the two teams from the past year.

Ours is akin to Sydney.

I'm actually thinking Melbourne. Their list is good enough to win the flag, and they showed spine late last year. The really were beaten by a more aggressive Port Adelaide with 3 drafted debutants. That's got to be troubllng.

The hot sticky conditions contributed to the marginat Giants Stadium I think. The Bombers did more defending early and tired in the conditions.

I'm no expert on Norths list but I believe their backline is pretty disrupted? Also I caught most if the game after getting home and it seemed Freo were really awesome.
Was it dry, cool and non-sticky for GWS? Just another 'excuse'.
