Preview Round 2: Port Adelaide v Carlton

If we bring the same intensity that we brought to Melbourne we will be hard to beat

Port by 32,
westhoff to kick 4 (that would make sure he kicks his 300th goal in his 250 game)
Rocky to have 38 disposals and a goal

The margin depends on the weather and hopefully no come down after last week. Obviously a loss would be catastrophic but after seeing Hawthorn come here and disable the Crows infront of 50k at a season opener I'm not gonna say losing is nigh on impossible it's just very unlikely and we should win easy*

*unless it's pissing down

Carlton look to be more competitive this season and have more scoring power with the additions of Fasolo and McGovern. Their forward line of Fasolo, Charlie Curnow, McKay and McGovern is decent on paper but against Richmond Curnow and Fasolo didn't have the best of games. McGovern is a bit overrated. They do have 3 key talls so it will be interesting to see if we select Howard, but given McGovern isn't huge we'll probably stick with what we have.

If Kreuzer plays then the ruck battle will be more even but if he doesn't, Carlton are at a clear disadvantage in the ruck. Cripps and co in the midfield are very good on the inside in terms of extracting the ball, but don't turn those first-possessions into dominance at clearances (as a team, Cripps is a bit of a clearance freak on his own).

I think we should have them covered with midfield depth and better players on the outside, if we set up on the outside in a similar way to Rd 1.

Carlton like to share the ball around by foot, especially their half-back line but their speed of ball movement in 2018 was pretty poor. Ball movement speed looked ok in quarters 2 & 3 vs Richmond though, but they couldn't sustain it for the whole game.

I think if we back ourselves in with the aggressive kicking, hand-balling and hard running we saw against Melbourne we should be able to account for the Blues but I feel like Carlton will put in a much better performance than in their previous games against us at Adelaide Oval, so we shouldn't be taking them lightly.

Congratulations on thumping Melbourne last week - great result for your Club and supporters. Both teams still missing important best22 which is a shame - but should be a decent game and maybe closer than the usual thrashings your boys have handed out in recent times. Love watching teh Hoff - what a star. The Carlton kids are another year older and bigger and faster with improved fitness so good for 3/4 and Carlton has a half decent forward line in place to learn how to kick to. Might be a tad more interesting than many expect.

Good luck and no injuries!

Hello

It looks like our wishes align this weekend

I would very much like it if you smashed Carlton into oblivion, beat them by 15 goals and made SOS and Bolton cry on national TV

Marshall to kick 10, Rockliff to follow up last week with another BOG, etc etc

Please do it, i want the week's discussion on the football shows to be "Port v Carlton: should there be a mercy rule?"

Please ****. THEM. UP.

So best of luck!

Are you chairman of the Carlton Death-riding Squad?

Are you chairman of the Carlton Death-riding Squad?

Oh, I'd have to be close.

Yeah, something like this:

"Livewire Robbie Gray has slotted five goals as Port Adelaide demolished a hapless Carlton by 90 points in a Friday night AFL fizzer.

Port entrenched themselves in the top eight with a commanding 20.17 (137) to 6.11 (47) victory at Adelaide Oval.

The Power surged from the start, kicking the initial five goals against the lacklustre Blues, who managed just two majors until three quarter-time."

This is the wishes of a scared crow! Coming to a port board and begging for a win

Anyways... well done port, you killed it last week. I think you guys beat us this week but suspect it to be close.

Good luck to your club this year! No injuries for either team please!

This is what we did to Carlton Adelaide Oval 2017.
Boys will be up for this game ... Hoff 250 games .. they wont let him down.
Port by more than 50 points..
We will have 11 different faces and i think Carlton will have 12 different faces.

Yep, it'll be close...that's why we had 1 less contested possession, 29 more uncontested possessions, 31 more effective disposals, 3 more contested marks, 7 more marks inside 50 and 12 more intercepts. The only thing Carlton was better at is centre clearance...and that was considered to be Melbourne's strength as well.

Total distance covered - Port 276.3, Carlton 298.1 km (Richmond 288.0 km)
At high speed - Port 37.1, Carlton 36.1 km (Richmond 38.3 km)
Average speed in attack - Port 7.9 km/h, Carlton 8.6 km/h (Richmond 7.7 km/h)
Average speed in defence - Port 8.1 km/h, Carlton 8.0 km/h (Richmond 8.2 km/h)
Total sprint efforts - Port 82 km, Carlton 101 km (Richmond 119 km)
Total repeat sprint efforts - Port 4km, Carlton 2 km (Richmond 5 km)

So in order to play as well as they did, they ran 23 more kilometres...all of which were sprint efforts on the fast break on turnover (hence the high attack speed).

They are basically Port Adelaide 2013.

I think Carlton will have a better year than many have predicted and I've said that I believe they will finish closer to Adelaide than Adelaide fans will like (they've got a real great shot of beating the Crows actually)...but this week is a bridge too far. Concentrate on beating a slow side like Sydney next week.

P.S Here's a funny stat. Total sprint efforts across the league:

1. St Kilda - 292 km/h (13.2 km/h per player)
2. Gold Coast - 262 km/h (11.9 km/h per player)
3. GWS - 243 km/h (11 km/h per player)
4. Fremantle - 213 km/h (9.7 km/h per player)

5. Essendon - 196 km/h (8.9 km/h per player)
6. Western Bulldogs - 195 km/h (8.9 km/h per player)
7. Sydney - 191 km/h (8.7 km/h per player)
8. North Melbourne - 188 km/h (8.5 km/h per player)
9. West Coast - 188 km/h (8.5 km/h per player)
10. Brisbane - 149 km/h (6.8 km/h per player)
11. Richmond - 119 km/h (5.4 km/h per player)

12. Carlton - 101 km/h (4.6 km/h per player)
13. Collingwood - 95 km/h (4.3 km/h per player)
14. Hawthorn - 93 km/h (4.2 km/h per player)
15. Adelaide - 89 km/h (4 km/h per player)
16. Geelong - 88 km/h (4 km/h per player)
17. Melbourne - 84 km/h (3.8 km/h per player)
18. Port Adelaide - 82 km/h (3.7 km/h per player)

This is why you play this system where everyone fills positions on the field regardless. There isn't that useless running back to position which burns energy unnecessarily. I told you...Jeet Ken Do. A player positions himself in defence, he becomes a defender....a player fills a position in midfield, he becomes a midfielder...Be like water, friend.

What do you think is going to happen to all those teams that are burning themselves out? Even Brisbane did almost double the amount of sprinting that we did.

"I can't wait to play this week, it was so much fun." - Robbie Gray

I want to see more carlton v crows in this thread; why not? And then i will take a comfortable win..... carlton not horrible this time i reckon

Carlton winning would not surprise at all. They were ok for 2 1/2 quarters. Hopefully we don't go into cruise control mode and treat these as the big win it should be.

Port by 13

Mate, it would be a massive shock. Adelaide fans would hate you guys even more than they do now.

Whoever the crows pick after death-riding Carlton will be dubbed the next Andrew McLeod 7.0 and then will eventually request a trade to elsewhere anyway.

Fairly weaselly effort to come snivelling around a Port board. Maybe better to concentrate on what your own club is up to?

You mean like, wondering what to spend the first round draft pick you gave us on? LOLOLOLOL

This is exactly the kind of unwarranted arrogance Port are going to slap out of you on the weekend
