Eventually when we change coach, I hope the focus is on a candidate who is a skills based focused coach. It is great to pressure, it is great to win the contested ball and clearances, but if you can't hit a target then it is all for nothing.

How many elite ball users have we recruited?
Brad McKenzie, anybody else?

Your skills you can work on for years and be a neat kick.

Clarko actually teaches players how to make the right decisions!!!

That’s the sort of coach we need

A long read but we all remember then and wonder wow it’s been 10 yrs??

https://www.theroar.com.au/2019/03/27/north-melbournes-worst-losses-under-brad-scott/

Good read. Some real ripping memories in there . I said it above, but being consistently unable to stop opposition momentum indicates he is tactically inflexible, which is a huge weakness. Think of all those games in 2013 where we played brilliantly from that start, got a good lead and then went into our shells and ultimately got beaten when the opposition got a bit of momentum (vs Geelong early that year sticks out).

He has made the best of average lists, he's got us some thrilling finals wins, we've played some attractive football, he's gotten the best out of plenty of players. But he's had his time. I have a feeling this year might show that he's been in the caper too long...hope I am wrong, but seeing that insipid shite after another summer of hope...we've been here so many times before. Insanity = taking the same actions and expecting different results. Either that or he's out of ideas and out of touch with how the game is evolving...similar vibe to Laidley 2009 perhaps...

Denis might be a dinosaur, and yesterday’s man, but I am convinced that under the current 6/6/6 structure, his game plan would be far more effective than Brads.

Bring him in as caretaker, in 6 months he will ;
Turn the place on it’s head
Instill the necessary culture and discipline
Permanently wipe the smile off L Macs face
Play players on merit and in the right position
Let players play their natural games and not turn them into HB plodders
Make them all delete insta and no more photos of skinny pants and no socks
Little or no time on media street
Ask mason if he wants to be a footballer or male model from mudgee

He will turn these boys into men quickly, if the millennials can’t handle it, there’s the door son

Back to basics

Yeah, part of the working on good skills is making good decisions and all the players instinctively knowing what each player is going to do and what is expected of them, we just seem badly drilled, those plays where players are moving forward and then Macmillan u-turns and goes back to the goal front and players are then scrambling to double back and support and then it turns into a shitfest. Those kind of plays where players don't go with the first option because they hesitate or doubt themselves just undermines the whole gameplan. It wasn't just an isolated incident, it just seemed nobody knew what they were doing half the time.

You don't need to be an elite ball user, anyone can hit targets 30m away with a kick or a handpass 5m if you practice it enough, you need to be an elite ball user to hit long targets like 50m away through traffic.

Denis as caretaker is a bit of a reach but how good would it be to get him in as a mentor. The same with Carlton bringing back Wallsy.

I do wonder why Denis didn't land on his feet somewhere after the Carlton gig. Maybe he was tired of it all - don't blame him. I'm enjoying his appearances here and there these days. People forget how much of an absolute master coach he was.

I have occasionally posted the idea of a mentor over the years

No one listens at the Club

He's never managed to consistently create loose targets.
He's never managed to consistently create outnumbers.

If he's been trying to do either he's failed, if he hasn't been, how exactly has he been trying to give his teams a competitive advantage?

Great coaches of team sports have ideal styles in mind, which they train for, add to that their particular players "flair" and synergy, which they provide room for and the outcome emerges as complex and hard to neutralise. Brad has his magnets, which he bought used off Gumtree. He is a shit coach, he struggled for years with Cunners ffs.

There's a lot of constructive discussion here, even if the thread has descended into a shitfest from time to time.

Actually, I think this was the first NM thread I posted in here at BF.

To my mind, I get the impression that north is picking teams without any consideration of the opposition. Our team is selected based on a premeditated game process, and we stick rigidly to the structure going into the games and throughout.

Last weekend freo didn't play the way norths brains trust predicted they would. We had no answer to this. We stuck to the structure, and followed the process, even though it was breaking down in just about every part of the ground.

We were clearly hampered by missing some of the best players and the injury to EVW didn't help, but there was no last gasp effort to save the game like we would have seen in the old days. Even Pagan would throw Carey or Longmire downtown the backline if we were getting a hiding, and every now and then it came off. We'd get a bit of a run on then suddenly, Carey back to CHF and the coach was being called a genius.

Sure, wood ain't Carey, but Scotts isn't Pagan either.

And we need somebody in the box who is prepared to motivate his team to play hard, creative and positive footy rather than the formula driven process oriented premeditated game we are playing today.

With plan By, C and bloody plan D if we need to pull it out.

With regards to the whole millenials can't take criticism thing, I think that's complete myth and malarkey.

Alistair Clarkson is one of the most successful coaches in history and has 3 flags, 4 grand finals this decade. He gives every impression he's just as ruthless and brutal as Denis was, if not more. The players clearly respond to his strength, instruction and leadership.

Ross Lyon has made 3 grand finals in the last decade and ditto, the man is a hard-arse.

Longmire doesn't exactly come across as suffering fools.

You might not be able to belittle blokes on their appearance like old school coaches did but as long as a Denis Pagan adjusted slightly for modern social norms and incorporated people with modern skillsets covering the data analysis side of the game, of course a strong autocratic type could still be successful.

I've said it enough times, Brad comes across as thinking blind thoughtless 'backing in' displays the ultimate level of support. Even though people have listed examples of players who were relieved to eventually get dropped almost like they had to force it.

People haven't changed that much. Small units like football teams will yield to the will of a strong leader. Give them a weaker leader and they'll take an inch and run with it.

To me Brad Scott is the David Brent of AFL coaching. Trying to be other things to his players other than the hard-nosed leader that will harness their best to win a premiershp that they deep down crave.

On a slight tangent, I'd love to hear David Hale's honest assessment of all his senior coaches and how he'd rank them.

Brad's game day coaching begins and ends before the game actually starts.

He has his set gamestyle in stone and let's the game develop as it may from the first bounce until the final siren.

It's his biggest downfall.

Take Round 1 as an example. Clearly, we went in thinking Freo would be the stodgy, slow ball moving side as they have been for the entire time
Under Lyon.

Low and behold, they come with a completely different gamestyle and blow us off the park in the first 30 mins.

What do we do? Absolutely nothing.

What would you expect him to do in that 30 minutes?

They played a reactive game style that probably wouldn't have worked if we hadn't stuffed up the first quarter.

Also he does change his game style/tactics from day to day. When we beat the Swans in Sydney last year they were attacking off rebounds from Ben Brown so he sent brown down back (where he took important defensive marks) and made Wood a target. It stuffed Sydney up.

I don't think he is the best tactical coach tho.

Interesting to see what happened after each of the loses listed in this article.

It doesn't excuse the overall trend or blowout games but I'll be putting on $$$ for us to win this week.

You've accidentally put the R6 1999 game as the 117 point loss. We actually beat the Pies by 28 that day. It was R16 2011 when we lost by 117.

I'd expect him to make changes based on what he had seen during that first quarter.

He didn't. We allowed them to rebound without a care in the world for the entire game.

Name one of those clubs that has hung to a coach that hasn't made a GF for nine years. We have an unprecedented coach. The only coach in the history of the AFL that has coached continually at the same club without reaching a GF. Fans will not stand for his bullshit anymore. If he can't get this list to top 4 this year then he needs to pack his bags. Hanging onto him will cost more than any payout.

As for the payout, I can't believe his contract wouldn't have a performance based trigger in it.
Brad Scott believes his own bull-hit. His contract couldn't possibly have a perfornance trigger in it😉

Problem is if you're not an elite ball user you always take the safe easier options, like your 15 to 30m sideways chips.
Elite ball users take the riskier option and turn defensive situations in to attacking situations and usually F50 entries.

We need more elite ball users, especially from the back half.
