Short suffers when Houli doesn't play as the opposition sit on him more to stop his run, it a also means his direct opponent is a bit tougher as well. This is where Markov and Ellis needed to step up and fill the void a bit, unfortunately Markov seemed too afraid to run off and Ellis seemed to be playing safe as well. Hopefully if all 3 play again this week they'll have a better understanding of each other's roles and tendencies.

I think the point is we can get away with it against teams who have only a couple of good mids bc we make up the difference with the small man pressure when they relieve the big boys in Martin and Cotchin. Unfortunately when you’re up against Collingwood these back up troops can’t go with Pendlebury,Treloar, Beams Sidearse and co. Also add their ruck in Undies and you have way too many guns to disarm.
They will belt us any day and everyday if we go armed the way we did last week.
The fact that we were 17th in clearances last year should have been warning signs to get an A grade midfielder ASAP. We addressed the problem in the draft , but that’s more long term.
The thing is we don't have the cap space to recruit an established a grade player in any position.

We won't miss last years No.1 metres gained player in the AFL?

OK.
Correct. We won't miss our softest, most panicky footballer who turns it over under pressure and can't win a contest.

Stack showed in one game everything Short lacks.

Metres gained. Of all the irrelevant nuff-nuff stats, that's right up there.

Needs improvement big time kicking was his weapon that's gone now.Did he even work on his defence weaknesses preseason.

Softest? He tried to punch the ball away with a dislocated elbow.
Most panicky? Jason Castagna says hi.
Who turns it over under pressure? Pretty sure most AFL footballers turn it over under pressure. And I can name a host of our players who turn it over under no pressure.
Can't win a contest? Yep, I'll agree with you there. But you can pick faults in all our players if you really want to. And Short does need to improve in this area.

Metres gained isn't without flaw, but it is a good indicator of a players attacking intent. And something more of our players could do with ATM.

Short isn't perfect, but some of these posts don't give him any credit at all.

BEllis and Short would be the least hard players in the team

Short you can understand because he is built like a teenage girl

Are kick ins added to mtr gains?
Not sure

PLAYERS will be awarded a disposal when they completely step out of the goal square from a kick-in or handball the ball to a teammate from the square, Champion Data has advised.

Champion Data finalised its official ruling around the new kick-in rule on Thursday and as per previous seasons there will no disposal given when a player kicks-in while clearly still in the square.

We won't miss him. At all.
Your kidding!!
If he won't be missed then why did EVERYONE have him in our best 22??
He set up most of our goals with his run and great disposal last year.
Why do you think everyone looked around for him for a shot at goal!
Low profile doesn't mean he's a low player.
Will be missed badly.

EVERYONE didn't have him in our best 22!! I didn't, never have.
He didn't set up most of our goals, not even close. He had 6 goal assists for the year. 6. From 81 inside 50s. His run and disposal are both grossly overrated. At best he is an overlap runner, not a linebreaker.
He kicked 9 goals for the year, 2 of them in a one-minute period when Collingwood was asleep and will never happen again. Stack has 1 goal from 1 game.
His profile is higher than his output.
Won't be missed, at all, unless we cop another rash of injuries.

I'm with you. He's certainly not a hard nut but I he gained some respect from when when he still tried to knock the ball away with his dislocated elbow.

He's not a star and never will be but he plays his role. Obviously he plays best when he gets the clear air to pull the trigger. Unfortunately the way we've been playing everyone is constantly under pressure. Can't have too many of his type in a team but there is a spot for 1 or 2.

That explains the massive jump in meters gained averages this year
Last year only three players averaged over 500 meters, Short the most with 522.
So far this season we have four players over 600 with Whitefield the higher on 695.

it’s so the afl can point to the stats and tell everyone there is more space because of 666. hard not to be cynical with this sport

I get it with Short and the potential to get it out the back for the small forwards, 70 mtr player and all that.
And when it was Houli on the other flank you had the possability of running and overlap.
The kick from Stack kicking to Higgo’s advantage 20mtr into space for him to run onto, I dunno Short would’ve done that and now that our main forward plays out’ve the square rather than Reiwoldt being a target 45-50 mtr out we need smarter entries rather than as far forward as quickly as possible.
We need to develop a better/different transition game coming forward than how we finished last year and we’ll have to without Short.
To be honest with our defence system weakened without Rance I think Stack makes it stronger than what Short would.
