Autopsy Hawks defeated by Cats

Nash is not a 20 to 22nd player. Your 20 to 22nd player should still be able to contribute to the overall performance of thebside.
He is a foreign development player who should be learning how to play Australian Rules Football (not AFL just Aussie Rules in general) in the VFL until such a time as he is compentent at the game.

If that's your opinion I'm ok with it... but where does it leave Chad, Bruest and Gunston this year... Nash would be lucky to be taking 1% of the salary cap actually probably none as he's an international rookie promoted and their outside it, my guess is those 3 are taking close to 20%... given they are at their prime. They have not in the past two weeks provided 6 times the output each of Nash. In fact Nash's job in the first half was simply to punch the ball out of bounds doing the old Get out of Hale (Jail) play young David ran for us for 3 premierships. He punched the ball out plenty. Gunston was reasonable down back apart from a few terrible passes. Chad and Bruest had their second week in a row shockers. Bruest at least the week b4 managed a goal. Puopolo did twice the work of both as a forward and he'd be on peanuts. The problem isn't Nash it's out 'stars' who aren't performing. Nash is the scapegoat for them... and the past few weeks so is poppy.

I was at the game and only saw it after he was on the ground. He didn’t look like he was milking it on the ground. Even after it was crystal clear that the umps weren’t going to pay anything he was still in obvious discomfort and unable to get back up immediately. Hawkins was otherwise free in the goal square and would have got a certain goal if the ball was kicked towards him.

But even if we were to concede that he was faking it, he was still clearly illegally hit off the ball. Way worse than any push into the chest of a player facing you and doing the same back.

Ridiculous double standards.

I don't know what to make of that game..

We look good in patches but then the bad stands out e.g. missing targets, tackles and just the skills.

No structure in defence or going forward. Just bomb it long and hope for the best.

I know we are missing key personnel but we looked out of our depth today and I don't think they would have made a difference to the scoreline.

I am still positive about this season but we have a lot of catching up to do.

As always go Hawks.

100% with roughy he gets lost as deep forward all game. He is great in the middle for a big man better used when he can get involved in the game show he leadership.

M.Lewis provided a contest that all we can ask at this point.

Yep and by having Roughie as a 2nd ruck it means you can play Lewis as the KPF. Roughie actually looked like he was enjoying himself in that role too. He’s still not Roughie of old but he kicked 2.1 and set up a couple as well.

Thought:
  • Brand was OK and did his job well.
  • Hendo was epic
  • How Sicily pretty much hasn't done anything undisciplined since the Doggies "game"
  • Our balance looks better with a marking forward instead of the 2 rucks.
  • Credit to Geelong - their pressure all match. Hawks pretty much had no loose ball gets (despite what the stats say). Cats so very good at the scrappy, scraggy, holding but not holding pressure acts. Perfect execution given how the modern game is officiated.
  • McEvoy extremely good again too.
  • Not a good match for the kicking in danger purists
ETA: The 4th Q counter-attack was important I think. Didn't just let the game coast to defeat or blow out to 40+

All part of the game. No need to get tribunal involved for me.

I can agree with most of what you posted above and agree that Bruest, Chad and Gumners need to lift but i have to pull you up on comparing Nash to Hale!
Hale was one of the very few players who could play a multifacted Ruck/Key Forward role and be effective at both roles. I struggle to see Nash being anywhere near as effective as old megahead (at least at this stage of his career).

Mirra and Nash should never play another game.
3 positives were how good mitch lewis looked, worpel and big boy until he went down.
I'll continue to say this and cop heat but Jaeger just isnt what we are paying for. He hasnt become an elite game breaker just a good mid
Bring back burton after Chad's putrid efforts today

First game I was able to attend all year, good to see the boys up close. BB was an absolute beast. Liked Sicily and Worpel’s games. Lewis offers a lot, must keep playing him as he provides structure. Henderson had a blinder. Hardwick was also in the right areas. On the negative side, Morrison was always a few steps off the pace - when you have a Xavier Ellis type build, you have to be two steps ahead of the play to make it in AFL and I just don’t see it yet. Bruest had a mare, and unfortunately when he’s off he’s really off. Our lack of structure in the forward line is a real concern. We need players like Lewis and Roughead forward to provide a contest and Bruest, Puopolo and Wingard at their feet. Too many times our forward line is completely empty and we are relying on over the back goals or Poppy to contest against two bigger players to lock the ball in. Thought our midfield performed credibly and our backline as well considering the outs.

I am a bit pissed off at the moment:

Sicily is the only player in our back half who is creating the play.

McEvoy is a gun.

Lewis and Brand impressed.

Morrison, Mirra, and Nash are not helping us win.

Scully can't take contact. He overturns the ball with handballs if under pressure. Smith not much different atm, and doesn't tackle.

Poppy can't buy a free kick.

Roughy looking worn out.

Time to rotate our list, find out what we have got.

Good points, but this is the part where newer players have to learn the plan, we have got a but of disruption with players out. The fact that two prominant defenders are out, Shiels is out and Burgoyne, I think Wyngard was OK Scully simplt needs to get into the style and it is all very new for people with big reputations and a lot riding on them, it is not easy at this level, but Hawthorn have a potential it is always there, there is a mind set in that club that brings it all out and eventually it all comes about at the same time. There is little flashes of that now. There are some footballers who get nothing, Selwood used to, Dangerfield is the most looked after, then you look at Poppy who'd have to a target for a mafia hit to get a free, some as Buddy Franklin here at the Hawks and now in Sydney, don't ask me why it just is.
Sicily looks and over does his work sometimes, he's looking for a valuable kick to give to someone , they are right now not presenting like the drilled pros' we've known it takes time, like Carlton , they put it together they have to make that all the time.
So do we but we have an advantage we have that culture and that football smarts , we also have the fact that its the 5th round there is 18 games to come.
This is the year of the big big learning curve where our kids get to see how it works , when I say kids I mean blokes with 2 to 20 games under their belts, they will all come through.
Once again I know you know what your saying this is the year that we try out , and learn and rotate the list, we lost but we gave what we had today, other circumstance and Geelong not getting that 2 to 3 goal break, we had a chance , couldn't nail it.
This is our game, and for once , YES for once I saw us get some frees that were as bad as what Geelong got too, the frees that are ridiculous are still there , but maybe the umps are giving some thought to the accidentals, they are still pretty strict , I still demand full time professional umpires.

Then they will know the spirit of the game, practising and learning , with the people they control on game day! It'll make the AFL"s grey and some rules stupid , easier to put up with!

Positives - Brand seems like he can actually be a good defender with intercept and contested marking abilities. Very happy with his game.
-Mitchell Lewis was pretty good, took some good grabs and definitely showed enough to play again next week.
-Worpel best midfielder apart from henderson, cannot say anything about this blokes effort
-Henderson in absolute career best form and convinced it has something to do with the inclusion of scully. One of a few blokes who have really stood up this year.
-Big Boy tough as nails and marking beast. Looking to be in near career best marking form.

Negatives: - Nash just does not know the right spots to be in on the ground. Understandable but really hope he can figure it out.
- Entry into forward 50 seemed pretty bad right throughout the game.
- Very average game from cousins, although believe he'll redeem himself
-O'Meara very quiet
- Scrimshaw?(Or whoever was on rohan) was getting carved up.
- Don't think Mirra is going to be playing many more AFL games
- Just did not look very dangerous with ball in hand going forward, even with number advantages. Probably has something to do with inexperienced midfield not wanting to kick for fear of intercepts but jeez, the cats were going forward quickly and effectively.

Disappointed but not disheartened. We were never really a realistic chance of winning, but still went with them for the most part. So many injuries to your best 22 is always difficult to cover

Worpel and Lewis were very good of the young brigade and I thought Brand did a fairly good job
Hendo just keeps being among our best and Big Boy is a tower

Two very telling rounds coming up. Gotta string it together for longer to stay in touch with the finals race

*fitness is an issue for the whole squad, they seem to run out of energy late in quarters too often.

.

Seems like we are missing our former fitness and Conditioning guru in Andrew Russell

Not very often I'm reasonably ok with a loss but this one I can live with - even against Geelong.
We've got a promising future ahead folks.
P.S. Can't wait to see Patton lining up against Cats next Easter [emoji16]

Wasn't the worst loss.

P.S. 3-peat knee reco Patton. Eeek!!! I hope not.

Worpel is showing up a lot of our senior players with his efforts.

A few in particular need to have a good look at themselves.

I have no doubt in my mind that one day Worpel will be a future captain of this club. The kid has had a sensational second season so far. What’s more impressive is the fact that he’s playing well without Mitchell and Shiels by his side.
