One thing we can guarantee with Curtin and all our other players. Expect zero, absolutely zero, lateral thinking from our coaches on how to develop him best.

Edit: and to be honest, this is probably a good thing. The last bit of lateral thinking our coaches did was to put Pedlar on Stewart. And now Peds is stuck in the 2’s

He's the same as all our other draftees. Can play midfield but we'll play them anywhere but first

There is certainly a chance that other clubs saw a dynamic, versatile tall who could play midfield and we saw our next Daniel Talia but with a few more tricks.

Ultimately we'll start him off against key forwards because that role will take the longest for him to develop in. Thankfully we won't have to consider picking him for a while. Maybe next year with Dowling he'll get a look in.

Remember Worrell had to wait until halfway through his fourth season on the list to start getting regular games. Even then it took an ACL to Doedee for him to start getting games.

Likewise Doedee having to wait until Lever left, and Keath having to wait until Doedee did his first ACL.

We'll probably expect Curtin to sit there in the SANFL until Worrell leaves. Never mind his peers will have 70+ games to their name by then.

Yeah, and I feel like he's getting to a lot of contests. Just can not clunk them to save himself right now. Sometimes its barely a contested situation and he still turfs them.

When ROBs on he's taking those marks, so regardless of his tapwork, for me he's out of form!

Poor kid. They fail to give him a string of games (by string I mean a dozen).

He had 17 touches which compared to the rest of the team were fine.

He had three howlers - that spoil in defence that went to Essendon goal square, that dropped chest mark which went for a goal and I forget the third!

He has been very good otherwise and has shown he will put his body on the line when needed - unlike others.

The club has a very old school approach to the development of some players as was pointed out with the Worrell/Doedee/Lever stuff

Back a few decades ago squads were stronger, list management was less advanced, talent pool better. Clubs didn't have to immediately play drafted players because there was less risk of leaving and the best 22 quality was better.

Since the introduction of Gold Coast and GWS most teams have looked to get their draftees in sooner because the bottom couple of players in any given team have dropped away to make room for more teams. So you may as well play a first round pick who is likely better than some reserves quality shlub

Also with a larger salary cap, free agency, longer term deals now being common, rivals are much more aggressive at poaching talented young players and paying for potential. This has again been exacerbated by a weaker talent pool and compromised draft.

We can't just expect Curtin to go through a multiple year apprenticeship in the SANFL and be happy with that.

If we learned anything from the Davis, Gunston, Lever, Cameron, McGovern situations (and you better believe we learned absolutely nothing, we never do) it's that not backing in juniors and not paying them what they are worth WILL make them more likely to leave.

Yes we have played some juniors immediately, but often this has been because we lacked existing players in those roles or we played them out of position again because we lacked players in those roles.

With Curtin we don't lack players in his role, so he's in the twos. Now I'd argue the players in his position (Brodie Smith

This might be correct re the diluting of the talent pool (I also think there are other reasons for that in addition to the expansion teams, but that’s another post for another day.)

I’m not sure it’s entirely correct to say the club is following an old school approach though.

Investing successfully in “green” talent isn’t a new idea.

It’s an idea that comes from judgement, enterprise, instinct, and risk management.

That’s the part missing. The quality minds.

Some stuff you can’t get from a formula or a spreadsheet.
