This kind of an incredible, dominant performance creates questions that recruiters need to answer. Is Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves the most talented prospect in the draft pool? Has he been hampered all season by injuries that have prevented him from fully showing what he has to offer?
No other prospect has had such a huge gap between his best and his worst this year, and this might just be the best single game performance we’ve seen this year. It’s the first time that he’s looked convincing playing on ball, showing that he’s capable of getting first hands on it and driving his team forward. His running power was as elite as always, but instead of running to get to a contest and then hovering around ineffectively he was much more active and impactful. His elite traits like his ball skills and marking are so good that if he can find the ball 29 times like he did in this game he is going to dominate.
Duursma’s combination of upside and traits make him an incredible attractive prospect even at his floor. Tall with a frame that can put muscle on, great overhead marking and developing spread/transition, athletic traits in speed and endurance. Only real concern is lack of mid time which he’s answering right now and also kicking but it’s not as if he’s bad, he sometimes bites off more than he can chew and that can be coached out. He’s pulling away right now as number 1 but I think he wouldn’t go 1 in a few other recent draftsI am surprised that the consensus on the Board is to take 1# Duursma and 2# Sharp; my question for the draft watchers, after reading through the comments is: Sharp is essentially a guaranteed player for 200 games, while Duursma could be anything. Are we really in a position to go all in on Pick 1 for Duursma?
Wouldn't it be better to pick Sharp, split Pick 2, and select Cummings plus player X, who again is almost a known quantity compared to Duursma? Personally, if we are to gamble on a player like Duursma I would want to take that gamble in a few years from now when we have the building blocks of certain amount of elite talent.
Inconsistency and disappearing too often, may be down to carrying injuries though, but also could be character concerns. Not really known yetWhat are the knocks on this kid? 29 disposals without a fumble is pretty impressive, especially when you consider the difficulty of some of his possessions.

Best CV is owned by Sharp by 100 milesWhy do you see Duursma as a gamble?
He has the best CV and exposed form out of any prospect other than Sharp. He’s delivered at every level over two years in multiple positions. Even if he doesn’t make it as a midfielder, he’s probably going to at least be a good HBF.
Cumming on the other hand had relatively middling U18 form, one great SANFL game and is now recovering from shoulder surgery. I like him as a prospect but he’s hardly a sure thing, especially as a full time midfielder.
We are have no shortage of solid but unspectacular talents. We need more potential stars.
Exactly, Duursma on both exposed form and potential is way ahead of CummingWhy do you see Duursma as a gamble?

This is it. We're in an incredibly powerful situation if we do end up with both pick 1 and 2. If another team is big on Duursma, or CDT, or any other player we don't rate as highly, we can get a good haul for pick 1 or 2 while still taking the player we rank highest. If we don't get offered a haul, just use them both. It's a can't lose situation. On Sharp vs Duursma straight up:
We have Reid, Hewett, and might add Warner as a FA in a few years - 3 players who are burst, damage, attack types who even if they're capable you don't really want spending the game at the bottom of packs (like if any of them got 10 tackles you'd almost be concerned that was at the expense of what makes them so good).
What we don't have is a primo, elite, contested/clearance winner who is 100% a fulltime mid. For that reason would prefer Sharp - think he'll suit who we already have a lot more.
If our most promising mids already on our list were more honest possession winner types, then I'd go Duursma. It's who we do have that makes Duursma feel like a gamble IMO (will he be as effective as we want him to be in our lineup).
For me it's make sure we get Sharp as priority #1. Then I'd be weighing up what we were offered for Duursma and whether that'll be more valuable - if the offer is awesome take it, if not JTD.

I don’t think anyone disagrees with the notion that Sharp is the best fit out of all of the prospects. On Sharp vs Duursma straight up:

I’m not sure “will they play 200 games?” is the only or appropriate metric. Chris Masten played 200 games. For what it’s worth, Xavier Duursma is well on his way to 200 too.Me, I wouldnt have a clue if he is a gamble.
What I have taken from the many pages is Duursma can be anything but let me ask the question in another way.
Out of the players projected in the top 10, which two players would you put your left nut to play 200 AFL Games? The consensus is Sharp is one of those players, is Duursma?
This is a typically well thought out point by you, BS.I’m not sure “will they play 200 games?” is the only or appropriate metric. Chris Masten played 200 games. For what it’s worth, Xavier Duursma is well on his way to 200 too.
The better question is whether the player is potentially good enough to move the needle for this team. And from there, whether you think that player will make good on their potential.
Sounds like we need to draft this Patrick Blake ..It's worth noting that Duursma was mostly lining up against our untried mids on the weekend.
Many of our starting mids had played for CMC during the week in school football (for the Herald Sun Shield) and were therefore not available for selection.
I guess I expected more of Willem when he went through the midfield due to this.
I couldn't help feeling that if Patrick Blake (who IMO is the best tackler at Talent League level this season) had lined up on Duursma as this is Blake's starting position rather than a number of our rotating mids who were available but not really our typical midfield options then Blake would've completely shut Duursma out of the game through the midfield.
Duursma intercept game would still be a feature though.
Its not Duursma's talent I think is the issue but more will he want to go back to Vic. It doesn't mean dont pick him but it will be Reid all over again

The question on this forum isn’t “Duursma vs Sharp”, it’s “Duursma vs split the picks”, which is a funny question because there has been nothing credible to suggest that the magical Essendon split is even on the cards. It’s not a split we’d want to do, but we assume that they want to because…they have Duursma’s brother?
None of the players expected to fall in that range excite me very much.
- Lindsay’s kicking is nice but he strikes me as a pretty limited player and similar to what we have in McCarthy.
- Cumming I like but his skills overlap quite a bit with Hewett and Reid, and his shoulder and form is a question mark.
- CDT probably won’t be available and he’s a big risk and a slow burn.
- Schubert is good but does he fit a positional need? Do we spend a top 10 pick on a forward to try and turn him into a defender?
- Greeves is probably too similar to Sharp to warrant serious consideration.
- I like watching Grlj run but is he a midfielder? Does he win enough ball? His form has been pretty spotty.
The two top 10 prospects I really like in this draft are Sharp and Duursma, and they happen to be attainable with things as they stand. I think they compliment each other really well and both fill needs within our team. Unless we get a godfather offer, JTSAD.
