No you don’t. Long doesn’t match Dawson’s athletic profile, Pendles never matched Cripps’, and Frampton doesn’t match Thilthorpe - yet all have been effective in direct nullifying roles previously.

In what substantial way does Long not match Dawson’s athletic profile?
Don’t you think if that was the case, that Long would not have been able to shut Dawson down.
As to the others you mentioned Pendles and Cripp are even on height, tank and leg speed. Frampton is well matched to Thilthorpe on size, and bulk, and has the necessary speed when Thilthorpe plays fwd.

Dempsey as a mid, is exploiting teams with all his traits, all over the ground, hence my suggestion of Allan.

I tend to agree with others that the improvement of Frampton has tempered our need for another defender, which makes our hot pursuit of Silvagni even more curious.

Frustrating if Butts has chosen North over us (I hope we asked the question) but I guess they have the money.

Should have been an easy sell:

Frampton is going to be 29 next year. Not injury prone. Still got plenty of footy in him with Reef coming through underneath.

I reckon we might just need to settle for the draft this year.

Are we in bad shape if we don’t add one? A returning Reef alongside Moore, Howe, Frampton and maybe Howes as a flex option seems enough to me for 2026. Yes there’s some urgency for 2027 if it turns out Reef isn’t up to it alongside a looming Howe retirement, but Frampton’s emergence has lessened the need to add one, IMO.

When Reef returns we'll be in better shape than we were once Reef did his knee. It'll be Reef for Dean and an improved Frampton. However, I'm not sure how list mmt works - they may have a set number of KPDs they go with at the start of the year - in which case we'll find a replacement for Dean - assuming he's delisted.

Could try the DFA from rich as depth. But it’s depth only we’d probably need which is hard to manage. I’d be fine grabbing jones on a 1 year. Can teach the kids and play if required. Similar to Goldstein

It’s hard to get a read but they could extend him and can change his position to a defender to replace Dean
He has some promising traits

Especially given we have McCarthy and west to come back next year
And if we have all 3 forward it might feel too top heavy?

I've got no idea what's around, but in terms of depth players, I'd go younger - 24 year old state leaguer/dfa who we think might be able to become more than depth in the future. I assume you mean Blight from Richmond? He might fit that bill - I've never watched him.

He played the first 3 games of the season this year as a defender before his ACL

He played the first couple this year. Wasn't great, but looked more solid than Dean.

But the reality is with JSOS off the table, we're not likely to be paying up for an upgrade on Frampton so blokes won't come for more opportunity - it'll be an unproven depth defender we're most likely to add if we add onto the group of Frampton, Moore, Howe and McInness.

He was looking great in pre season, the club had high hopes for him coming into this year. He looked alright in defence before the ACL. At the end of this season we can put the Charlie Dean experiment to bed. He was lauded as a great defender and "injuries kept him from reaching his potential early on". Kid is simply no good at the level. Has had plenty of chances. With Chooka, Moore, Howe, Maynard, Daicos, IQ that group has proven across the year to be the best defence in the comp. Reef is good depth. Next year will have an extra on the bench, no sub so thats fine for the defence.
